Australian Multicultural Community Services is a not for profit community service
agency serving residents from Melbourne and Greater Geelong. It seeks to provide home care
and other support services to older people and people with disabilities as well as those who take
care of them.
PURPOSE
The functioning purpose of Australian Multicultural Community Services is to work with
multicultural communities to provide services to the elderly. They provide support services,
referral services, coordination and special care to more than 800 individuals weekly. Their main
aim is to improve the well-being and lives of the elderly community from the multicultural
community. With more than 85 workforces who speak different languages, this agency seeks to
reach out to individuals from various diverse cultural backgrounds. In order to deliver fully, in
providing care, 140 volunteers assist Australian multicultural community services in providing
care to seniors (Australian Multicultural Community Services, 2010).
Having worked for over 30 years, this agency seeks to maintain high professionalism and
trusted care in delivering services to the elderly in Melbourne and Greater Geelong. It is a unique
agency that focuses on continuous improvement in respecting cultural diversity. At the moment
the primary focus is to personalize their services more and reach to more cultural diversities by
overcoming communication barriers. Also, this community organization seeks to assist refugees
and migrants from all over the world, who have settled in Victoria and Melbourne. At-large they
attempt to provide the various needs of individuals from diverse cultures and linguistics
background.

Australian Multicultural Community Services is one of the best community agency that
targets to be able to provide funds to cater to the needs of their clients in providing support and

achieved, and more is set to be achieved through the realization of the different objectives set by
the organization. These objectives include;

will enable more people to give in their lifetime and see the results of their donations as

PROCESSES AND PRACTICES
Australian multicultural community services carry out various practices in its effort to
achieve its mission and vision. They provide home care packages, social support groups,
volunteer visits, information, referral, and support, emergency reliefs, and respite for care givers
and adult education.
Home care packages
This organization provides the elderly in Melbourne and regions of Victoria with home care
packages. Whether it is a government funded or private care, the support staff take the services in
the homes of these individuals. They empower the elderly with personal independence and
provide the services in various languages depending on the preference of the client. The home
care package is available all year round, 24 hours in a day (Australian Capital Territory, 2010).
The package includes personal care, home care, and transport to run errands, garden maintenance
services, companionship, language assistance, post-hospital acute care, minor home
modification, care planning and pet care among others.
Social support groups
Australian Multicultural Community Services provide social support groups to the elderly living
at home. They aim to help them establish friendships, take part in activities that interest them and
keep them active. These activities range from craft, table games, day outings, cooking, guest
speakers, café lunches, gentle exercises and singing and dancing among others. During these
activities, transport and food are provided.
Volunteer visits
This is a program provided by this community organization where volunteers visit the seniors in
the community in their homes for free. According to Davis and McKee, (2012), the volunteers

match the needs of each of client from their language, interests, hobbies, availability, and
background. These visits are done every fortnight.
Information, support, and referral
Australian Multicultural Community Services offers information to their clients to assist in
finding the services needed as well as offer support services in ethnic senior citizen clubs.
Adult education
This practice includes taking low-cost courses involving people from diverse backgrounds
offered by Australian Multicultural Community Services. These include computer or iPad
classes, English for employment and English for daily living.
RESOURCES AND FUNDING
Clients under this program enjoy free to low cost since most the funding is done by the
Australian Government’s Commonwealth as well as Home Support Program. This means that
clients encounter a small fee, for instance, to cater for meals and transport (Biddle & Crawford,
2017).
