Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment delves into the realm of disaster management, specifically focusing on floods. It begins by defining floods, highlighting their causes, such as heavy rainfall, broken dams, overflowing rivers, and storm surges. The assignment then explores various strategies for community support, including the construction of dams, dykes, and spillways to control water flow and mitigate the impact of floods. It also emphasizes the role of social media in disseminating information during disasters, enabling NGOs to provide aid like food, clothing, and shelter to affected individuals. Furthermore, the assignment discusses the importance of governmental and NGO involvement in funding large-scale solutions, such as the construction of dams with spillways, to provide long-term solutions to flood-related issues. The assignment includes references to support the information provided.

Disaster Management 2
Question one
Disasters may include the earthquake, flood, landslides, tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones and
tsunamis which can kill thousands of people and also destroying the property. For this
discussion, we will use the flood as an example of disaster. Flood is mostly caused by heavy
downpours, Brocken dams, overflowing rivers and storm surges and Tsunamis. Flood is
basically identified or characterized by large stagnant water mass which submerges land that was
previously dry. The durance at which the flood at last depend on other factors like the types of
soil and the nature of land (land topography).
Question two
Some of the strategies I would voluntarily to support the community include the following;
Construction of dams: I would join hand with the affected community in the construction of the
dam in the area. Dams will help in storing the excess water which submerges on the previously
dry land.
Construction of dykes: Construction of dykes will ensure that water is held back to the water
body like a river, for the flood control they are usually constructed along the river banks to
prevent overflow of the river (Mascarenhas, 2011).
Construction of spillway: Spillways help in controlling the flow of water in a given direction,
it is always dug just like trenches thus reduces the volume of water which forms flood.
Question three
The use of social media platforms like FaceBook, whatsApp, twitter and Instagram help in the
quick spreading of the information about the flood. When the information about the disaster is

spread most people may come in to support the victims. The Non-governmental organization
(NGOs) may provide food, clothing and shelters to the affected individuals. With the knowledge
of the disaster to most people, it will be easier to find a permanent solution of the disaster like the
construction of big dams having spillways directing the water into those dams (Zeeberg, 2010).
With the involvement of NGOs and the government, it will be easier to fund the construction of
bigger dams to offer a permanent solution to the disaster.
