Community forms an important aspect of the modern day society (Hart, 2013).
However, initially I had very vague idea about the concept of community. I would like to
comment here that although I was familiar about the concept of community but I did not have
a detailed knowledge about the various aspects of community and how the members of the
community can bring about a change in the entire community itself through their collective
and cumulative efforts. The course helped me to understand the concept of community in a
much better manner. The two videos which were provided for my assignment were very
helpful and provided me with a lot of valuable information about the nature and the meaning
of community.
The video “Community action and the Environment” helped me to understand the
importance of the collective as well as the cumulative effort of each member of the
community. I think that the main idea behind the video was the very important for my
effective understanding of the entire community. The way all the members of the community
stood up for the cause of the community was appealing to me and helped me to understand
the importance of collective effort.
The video “A Place of Their Own” was also equally helpful for my understanding of
the meaning of concept of community. The concept of the caravan park where people from
different cultural, social, educational and ethnic background co-exist together seemed to me
to be a microcosm of the entire society itself (Cohen, 2013). I felt that the medium of protest
chosen by the residents of caravan was not adequate and they should have resorted to more
active form of protest.
I would like to mention here that since the initiation of this course work I became
much more interested in the various activities of my own community and especially towards
the activities related to its welfare. After the initiation of this course I and a few of my friends

started to work as volunteers for the cleanliness of our community. On every Sunday
morning, I and my friends gather together and try to clean the some of the areas of the
community which require cleaning. I personally feel that cleanliness is one of the most basic
requirements of a community and without it a community cannot grow or develop.
I would also like to mention another activity which I and my friends have undertaken
since the initiation of this course. Every month I and my friends try to arrange some events
like fun activities, small gatherings, get-togethers for the members of our community where
they can come and enjoy themselves. These events provide them with a platform where they
can come and get to know each other and more importantly discuss the issues which they and
the community in general is facing and what steps they can take to mitigate it (Bauman,
2013).
Thus, I would like to say to say that the entire course work was very helpful for me
and helped me to understand the various aspects of community in a much better manner.
More importantly, I would say that the course work has enabled me to become a responsible
member of the community and helped me to take initiatives for the improvement of the
community.
