Nurses can reach two topmost careers when they intend to extend their careers. The
doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and doctor of philosophy in nursing (PhD) are the two top
degrees that one can apply when planning to extend career. In spite of the two degrees holding
potential for higher salaries and benefits, it is essential that the student understands the
differences existing between them. This paper compares the two advanced degrees in nursing
and concludes with my opinion on the best career I would consider pursuing in future.
According to Clair (2016), the main difference between DNP and PhD is the area of their
application. DNPs apply their knowledge in leadership roles and frontlines of clinical practice.
They mainly seek to develop competent leadership in development of leadership roles and
management of healthcare institutions. Their knowledge and skills may also find practical
application in health policy design and development of programs that enhance the quality of care
in hospitals and higher education in clinical practice. A DNP graduate applies nursing
knowledge in clinical practice.
Compared to DNP graduates, PhD in nursing practice advance their career to work in
scientific research. PhD in nursing prepares the student to develop scientific knowledge that will
be used by the DNPs in their practice. Marian (2018) explains that PhD in nursing is always
research-based and takes the form of evidence-based practice. The student must complete a
capstone project and at times may involve teaching the findings for one to earn the PhD.
Additionally, while DNP programs prepare nurses to develop highest skills in practice, PhD
programs prepare nurses to become researchers.

After this analysis, I think that I would wish to enroll for DNP program. While PhD
program may be beneficial, I would wish to practice my skills. I want to work with patients
through practice. Throughout my life, I have wanted to exercise my skills that I have been
developing throughout my studies. I feel that PhD program will distance me from my patients. I
want to stay close to my patients and see them recover as I add value to their lives.
