Essay
AI Summary
This essay provides a comparative analysis of the effects of damage to the adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. It begins by outlining the distinct roles of each region, with the cortex being responsible for producing essential hormones like cortisol, which regulates blood pressure and metabolism, and the medulla producing non-essential hormones like adrenaline, involved in stress response. The essay highlights that damage to the adrenal cortex is more detrimental due to the critical functions of its hormones, discussing the implications of impaired cortisol and corticosterone production, including potential cardiovascular issues and immune dysfunction. Consequently, the essay concludes that, comparatively, damage to the adrenal medulla is less severe than damage to the adrenal cortex, given the cortex's vital role in maintaining overall physiological balance.

Comparatively-speaking, it is better to damage the adrenal medulla than damage the cortex.”.
Adrenal is a small gland that produce noradrenaline, steroid, epinephrine and cortisol
hormone. These hormone plays a vital role as their secretion help in controlling blood pressure,
heart rate and other important functions. In regard to adrenal gland, it can be said that it is made
up from 2 portions that are known as adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. Before comparing in
regard to damages to adrenal medulla and cortex, it is important to discuss difference between
both of these both terms. In regard to adrenal cortex, it can be said that it is the outermost layer
of the adrenal gland (Berger and et.al., 2019). Whereas, adrenal medulla is the middle or inner
layer of the adrenal gland. Adrenal cortex is responsible for producing important hormone, called
cortisol that helps in controlling blood pressure. Whereas, adrenal medulla produces hormone,
called adrenaline that helps in responding stress.
When adrenal cortex is damaged that this gland cannot produce those hormones that
protect people from heart attack, imbalance blood pressure and other important functioning.
Damaged to adrenal cortex can lead infection, bleeding in glands, genetic diseases and surgical
removal of adrenal gland if it damages to the great extent. Whereas, adrenal medulla or inner
layer of adrenal gland produce those hormones that are not essential. It produces those hormones
without them people can live easily. As compared to adrenal cortex, adrenal medulla is
considered as unimportant. On the basis of this difference and functions of both of these locative
organs of adrenal gland, it can clearly be said that damage to adrenal medulla is better than
damage to adrenal cortex (Sunwoo and et.al., 2019). There are number of body functioning that
is being performed by hormones, released by adrenal cortex and on the basis of these
functioning, it can be said that damage to adrenal cortex is not good and not better than damage
to adrenal medulla. Some functioning of released hormones of adrenal cortex include:
Hydrocortisone: It is known as cortisol that regulates ways in which convert protein, fat
and carbohydrate to energy. Other usage of this hormone is to regulate blood pressure and
cardiovascular functions as well.
Corticosterone: This hormone work with cortisol hormone and regulate immune
response as well as suppress inflammatory reaction.
There is third hormone that is also released by adrenal cortex is: sex hormones. It releases
both male and female sex hormones. Overall, it can be said that all these hormones, released by
outer layer of adrenal gland, it is vital and can affect overall functioning if it got damaged. So, on

this basis and effectiveness of adrenal medulla, it can be said that comparatively, damage to
adrenal medulla is better than damage to adrenal cortex (Di Lorenzo and et.al., 2020).
