Report: Indian and Japanese Railway System Comparison

this report has tried to explore
Japanese model of Railways for
improving Indian Railway
system.

Methodology
• In order to identify the current issues of Railway system,
the secondary method has been considered as more
reliable as it involves lesser complication as compared to
primary method of data collection.
• Interviewing a large number of people within a month is
not feasible.
• Rather, studying and researching on secondary sources
like books, web sources and academic journals are
feasible to do within a gap of one month.

Methodology
• Following secondary methods will ensure the authenticity
of gathered information as well.
• It will enhance the knowledge of readers regarding
history of Railways cover two countries India and Japan.

Findings
Indian Railways
• Using Government website as a
source, and supported by books on
Indian Railways no less than 20
million people regularly use trains as
their daily mode of transportation.
• Security is the biggest issue in terms
of train, tracks and platform safety
especially at night.
Japanese Railways
• Japanese railway system can be
described with the word ‘speed’ no
matter how difficult the situation
is and how heavy the pressure of
crowd is unlike Indian railways.
• Operations are maintained
professionally maintaining safety
guides thoroughly.

• Indian technology is not
that advanced to
implement high speed
technology as Japan.
• Sanitation is the biggest
issue in various stations
and trains.
Japanese Railways
• Japan has launched high
speed mono rails runs on
single track even.
• Luxury toilet facilities are
available in both the trains
and stations.

Discussion
• Starting from the British Raj India has been maintaining
the traditional method to execute railway operations.
• Apart from some contemporary technological implement
no concrete investment has been made in the areas of
safety, sanitation and infrastructure.
• An urgent requirement of following ideal framework,
technology and principles like Japan has been identified to
do justice with the people who regularly depend on
railways for mobilization.

Conclusion
• The existing issues have highlighted lack of skilled employees in field
of supervision management planning.
• Misestimating the Government funds has become a culture in India.
• There are faults while detecting the weak aspects of railways.
• Lack of advanced equipment can be spotted for old people and
persons with disabilities where sanitation and security matters are
consistently being relevant.
• There are shortage of carriages as compared to number of passengers
as well.

Recommendation
• Campaigns must be conducted in favour of cleanliness ventures and
strict fine system must be allocated to for using a railway toilet in
an unhygienic manner.
• Acknowledging security issues, India needs to explore Japanese
railway’s security system for following style of operation.
• Police protection must be increased to avoid accidents along with
that various crimes in moving trains.
• Researches and training sessions must be conducted in terms of
reducing the delay and introducing more high speed trains.
