CE 3.2 Project Background
CE 3.2.1 Characteristics of the project
I had identified a solution that is capable of eliminating two bigger problems that the
current world is facing. These problems are space for the waste generated from the steel
production companies and strength of the roads for the transporting services. I had delivered the
goal of the project is to utilize the steel slag (waste generated in the production of steel) in the
road construction and thus, eliminate the need of space and enhance the strength of the roads. I
had raised this concern as it has been one of the big concern for the steel factories to sump this
waste and if it could be utilized for some useful purpose like this then it will also be an effective
way for the development of the economy. These waste generated from the steel companies could
be utilized in the formation of different layers if proper proportion is used in the soil mixture.

CE 3.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
In manner to develop a project that is beneficial for the economy and could be utilized by
the factories, I had developed the following objectives for the project:
To use steel slag in road construction and thus, enhance the strength of the roads
To produce a revolutionary idea for the companies in manner to be utilized for
money making
To deliver the project successfully through collaborative communication between
the team without any conflict
To keep the expenses of the project within the estimated budget

CE 3.2.3 My area of work
I was leading the team and tried to assign the roles and responsibilities to each individual
according to their ability in manner to deliver the project successfully. I had delivered the testing
of the proportion of the soil mixture and rest of the work was sub-divided among other team
members. I had to evaluate all the properties of the mixtures and perform various testing in
manner to make sure that which layer should consist of how much proportions. I had executed
the testing related to the specific gravity, Atterberg test, liquid and plastic limit and based on the
findings I had to recommend whether the mixed solution is capable of holding the load of the
traffic.

I was responsible for the project delivery in a successful manner and maintain the
expected schedule and overall budget of the project. I was leading the team thus, collaborative
communication, better decision making, and motivating the team towards the objectives and
goals of the project was my responsibility. I had to make sure that the tasks divided among the
team members is according to their qualification and ensure that everyone is flexible within the
collaborative work. I had tried to maintain the feasibility of the project and ensure that the
execution of the project should be less complex in manner to accomplish the goals and objectives
of the project. I had to set proper and executable goals and objectives of the project.

CE 3.3 Distinctive Activity
CE 3.3.1 Comprehending the theory of the project
Mixing the soil with proper reinforcement material in a proper proportion could lead to
the enhancement in the cohesive strength of its compounds and thus, it would be capable of
handling the load of the transport in the country. Steel slag could be a better compound to be
mixed with the soil mixture in manner to enhance its strength and thus, it would be economically
feasible and able to provide an option for the steel production companies to dump their waste.
Such embankments could be much erodible than expectations and blending the steel slag with
the soil mixture could be highly effective solution for enhancing the strength of the roads.
CE 3.3.2 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I have implemented all the skills that I gathered during my academics for the successful
execution of this project as it was an important concern for me to use waste material for the
beneficial purpose. I had learnt about the various testing processes in my engineering academics
and applied those skills for the mixing of soil with different proportion and identifying the actual
properties of the soil before and after mixing slag.
CE 3.3.3 Accomplishment and task performed
I had set the deliverables and goals of the project for the successful execution of the
project and thus, assigned different jobs and sections of the project among each members
however, evaluation and monitoring was still in my hands. I had separated the mixtures of the
slag and soil in different proportion and based on the proportions I had delivered the testing
separately for each sample and collected data related to the property of the material. I had

performed various testings as stated in the above section and based on that properties of the soil
mixtures were determined.
CE 3.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions
3.3.4.1 Issues
Motivating the team members towards the set objectives and goals of the project was one
of the biggest issue faced by me during the delivery of the project as there was a time when the
team was conflicted from the topic. Feasibility of the project was another major concern as it
needs assurance that the project is feasible and meted the needs and requirements in manner to
make it popular for both the common people and company.
3.3.4.2 Solutions
I had set the meetings in manner to make everyone talk similar to the brainstorming
rather the approach was to clear the objective and listen to everyone that was a successful
attempt for eliminating the conflict and motivating team members towards delivery of the
successful project. I had assigned myself to the testing sector and this was the only way to ensure
that the soil mixture is feasible and capable of fulfilling the needs and requirements as explained
during the planning of the project.
CE 3.3.5 Plan to produce creative and innovative work
This project was an innovative approach for my place and I gathered the knowledge from
various scholar and research papers and based on that I executed this project. Mixing slag with
the soil mixture for the road was a new concept and implementing different proportion for
different layers was an innovative approach that was contributed by each team member. It was an
innovative approach to solve two problems with a single approach of mixing the steel slag with

the soil mixture. This approach will not only enhance the strength of the road rather it will be
solving the problem of waste dumping for the steel production companies.
CE 3.3.6 Collaborative work
This project was delivered successfully due to the contribution made by each team
member within the group and everyone had delivered their sector of work in an effective and
efficient manner. I was leading the team and at the same time, I and my team members were
assigned with different jobs according to their speciality. There were many other activities that
needed extra hand for the successful execution of the project rather than testing that includes
sample collection, data collection, soil mixture, adding with proportion and many more. I had
also considered the advice provided by the professor and every needed support was provided by
the professor in manner to execute the project in an efficient and effective manner.

CE 3.4.1 Project Overview
I had executed this project considering it as a revolutionary idea for the steel production
companies and enhance the economic life for the citizens of the country through providing roads
of high strength. This road will be capable of holding the traffic load of the increased population
and thus, provide a better and long term transport services without any trouble to the common
people of my country. I had presented a project that is capable of eliminating both the problems
with a single solution and thus could be categorized in an innovative approach.
