Introduction
In this essay an analysis will be given over the controversy in the use of psychotropic
medication in controlling the behaviour of the person which is suffering from mental illness.
The focus will also be provided over the challenging role of registered nurses who administer
the use of psychotropic medication. The advantages and disadvantages of the psychotropic
drugs will be analysed. The complexities of the use of psychotropic drugs will be analysed
and the findings will be described.
Analysis of psychotropic drugs over mental patients
It has been observed from a long time that psychotropic and seductive drugs are used
very widely in order to control the aggressive behaviour of the patients of mental illness. In
many of the cases of mental illness, there is always a risk associated with the mental patients.
Most of the patients may be harmful for others because of their mental disorders. They may
even harm themselves because they do not have control over their behaviour. The suicidal
tendencies are very commonly noticed in the behaviour of the patient of mental illness
(Duxbury, 2017).
Most of the patients of mental health are suffering from depression and other mental
disorder because of some trauma cases. Anti-depressant medications are prescribed to the
patients for improving their condition of depression. Emotional fluctuation, sudden loss of
close ones, neglecting by close ones and physical abuse are the major reasons behind the poor
mental condition of the patient. Psychotropic drugs are majorly used for removing the past
bad memories from the mind of the patient by providing him a lot of relaxation and suitable
therapies (Priyanka Sethi, 2017).
Because of this risky and unpredictable behaviour of the patients, nurses and other
healthcare professionals prescribed seductive drugs to them. According to a research, it was
found that the patient of mental illness also needs to respond for the therapy which is
provided by the doctors to him (Libby Roughead, 2020).
The treatments and therapies which are provided to the mental patients are usually
unpleasant and problematic in nature. Sometimes the patients of mental health do not want to
co-operate with the nurses and other medical staff and continue to show his rejection towards

the treatment. Patients may even become violent to the nurses and doctors who are
convincing him for taking the treatment and therapies for the wellbeing of his health. That is
why it is become essential to give seductive medicines to them for protecting the unusual
behaviour by them while receiving the therapy (Priyanka Sethi, 2017).
Health outcomes of psychotropic drugs over the mental patients
Mental health patients sometimes have very drastic effect of these drugs over their
health. Loosing memory and forgetting the things is the major consequences of taking
seductive drugs. Prolonged use of seductive drugs may also leads towards anxiety and liver
problems. That is why it is highly controversial for nurses and other healthcare professionals
for prescribing seductive drugs to the patients of mental health (Libby Roughead, 2020).
The side effects of the seductive drugs are extremely harmful for the physical health
of the person. However, these drugs not only help the patient by controlling his destructive
and harmful behaviour but also it helps the patient in reducing his trauma or past bad
memories. It is also beneficial for the patient because it helps him in receiving the therapy
treatments (Libby Roughead, 2020). Despite of many benefits, sedative drugs affect the
major body functions which are seriously detrimental for the health of the person (Duxbury,
2017).
After a long time consumption of these drugs makes the patient addicted to it and this
position is very drastic for the patients. The digestive system of the person becomes weak
because sedative drugs negatively impact over the liver of the person. Obesity and fatigue is
commonly noticed in those people who are consuming sedative or any other psychotropic
drugs. The regular use of these drugs results in malfunctioning of the nervous system and
other systems of the body and because of this patient not even able to live a normal life (B
Goldacre, 2012).
Despite of a lot of consequences of psychotropic drugs, it has been noticed that
limited consumption of psychotropic drugs is very essential because the nursing staff has to
deal with the harmful, unpredictable and uncertain behaviour of the patients. That is why
sometimes they do not have any other options other than providing psychotropic drugs to the
patients. Benefits of sedative drugs are well-known because it really helps the patients in
overcoming from their diseases (K Evans, 2016).

Challenging aspects of registered nurse who administer psychotropic medication
The various nurses and health care professionals prescribed the drug named PRN
psychotropic medication which is majorly given to change the mental state of the person. The
role of nurses is very challenging in these aspects. However, the nurses are supposed to give
the best therapies to their patients but there is always controversies found in the use of
sedative drugs which is excessively used by nurses in treating the patients of mental illness.
Many psychotropic drugs are used to suppress the emotional fluctuations and impulsive
thoughts from the mental patients (K Evans, 2016). By controlling the aggressive and
abnormal behaviour of the patient, the nurses and health professionals may ensure about his
proper continuing of the treatment and therapies (Priyanka Sethi, 2017).
By the laws of government of Australia related to the patients of mental health, it is
widely known that the patient should be treated with dignity and their human rights should be
maintained while giving them treatments and therapies. Maintaining the human rights of the
mental patients is a very significant concern for the nursing and other staff members of the
healthcare organisations (Priyanka Sethi, 2017). If the patient became violent at the time of
therapy or treatment, in that case use of psychotropic drugs became the only option to handle
the abnormal behaviour of the patients (R Miller, 2013).
According to research, it was found that many patient forget each and every thing
about their past which is very negative for their health. Extremely laziness and fatness are the
high level consequences of the patients (E Muir-Cochrane, 2018). The intentions of harming
other and suicidal tendencies are reduced because of these sedative drugs but a lot of physical
harm has been noticed because of constant consumption of the drugs (Aline Cristina Zerwes
Ferreira, 2020).
Nurses have to deal with the aggressive behaviour of the mental patients and
simultaneously they have to provide therapies and treatments to the client for improving their
mental conditions (Skinner, 2015). The use of psychotropic medication itself is a very
complex process. It is revealed in much research that medical techniques should be improved
in terms of treating the patients without using the sedative drugs. At the one side the use of
psychotropic drugs improves the mental condition of the person, on the other hand, it affect
the physical health of the patients (N Purdie, 2010).

It was found that the use of drugs should not be unlimited and regular for the safety of
the physical health of the patients. Even getting at that time relaxation by suing sedative
drugs, it was also found that the trauma and unpleasant memories do not forget completely by
the patient. This is the main reason for which there is a lot of controversies exist in using the
sedative drugs (Muir‐Cochrane, 2018).
Controversial use of psychotropic medication
The psychotropic medication involve many medicines like ADHD ( Attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder), antidepressants, sedatives, antipsychotics and other mood stabilisers
are used in order to control the behaviour of the clients (Chris Philip Stephenson, 2020).
These drugs are prescribed by the registered nurses not only in Australia but also throughout
the world (B Goldacre, 2012).
Researchers and health care experts said that these drugs only have partial and mild
effect on the behaviour of the person but a prolonged and constant consumption of these
drugs are extremely harmful for the body functions of the patient. That is why only short term
and limited consumption of these drugs over the patients is suggested by the health care
experts (Libby Roughead, 2020).
The use of psychotropic drugs in particularly children and young candidates are very
harmful because it makes them dysfunctional and unable to be attentive in their daily work
schedule. It is also responsible in short term memory loss of the patients and provides very
little benefits to the patients of mental health (Nizette, 2014). Still the use of these drugs are
increasing day by day because the nurses and health care professionals find it is the most
suitable and easy technique to deal with the impulses and aggressive behaviour of the patients
(Duxbury, 2017).
Complexities in using psychotropic drugs
The use of drugs can-not be prohibited completely because sometimes it is very
essential to control the suicidal and harmful behaviour of the mental health patients. By
controlling the aggressive behaviour, the nurses can get time to make the patient comfortable
and removing his bad memories that are responsible for his poor mental health conditions
(Chris Philip Stephenson, 2020).

The immediate relaxation is also necessary for the safety of the mental patients
because it has been seen that many mental patients adopted for suicidal behaviour. Nurses are
prescribing these drugs by ensuring about the safety of the patient but most of them do not
very much aware about the consequences of the psychotropic drugs (CR Kneisl, 2004).
The regular consumption of these drugs in a high quantity degrades the quality of
treatment. It severely affects the physical health of the person (Paris, 2013). Sometimes it
may leads towards the complete or partial memory loss of the person. Moreover, swelling in
the various body parts of the patients are also the results of using psychotropic drugs at a
massive level (Association, 2013).
The health care organisations, nurses and all staff members should be aware about the
complexities of using these drugs and only a limited consumption of these drugs should be
allowed for the wellbeing of the patients. For overcoming from the consequences of the
psychotropic drugs, it has been suggested that a few quantity of drugs should be used for
improving the mental condition of the person by controlling his impulsive behaviour (Aline
Cristina Zerwes Ferreira, 2020).
Conclusion
On the bases of the above research it has been observed that use of psychotropic drugs
is very controversial because of its drastic consequences over the physical health of the
mental patients. Many psychotropic drugs are used by the nurses for the wellbeing of the
patients. However it helps the health care professionals by controlling the aggressive and
harmful behaviour of the patient that is why it is very widely used in improving the mental
position of the patients.
A lot of researches are going on to find out the substitute of the psychotropic drugs.
Still the trend of using these drugs is keeping on increase. The patients of mental health are
facing the consequences of the consumption of the psychometric drugs. However, it has been
found that only limited and short term use of these drugs are beneficial in improving the
mental state of the person.
