Entry 1: Discriminative listening
Date: 1 April 2020.
Description of listening experience
I and my younger brother live together in an apartment. We often talk in the morning
about several things including what is going on in our lives. My brother is an active person
with full of energy. In that morning while we were talking, his behaviour felt different. He
was talking in low voice without looking at me and was trying to work unnecessarily. If we
know a person and his behaviour, we notice even a small change in their voice and quickly
understand that something is unusual or wrong (Wolvin, 2011). I noticed his behaviour and
voice immediately and asked him if something is wrong. He nodded to nothing and started
asking me about my planning of the day, probably to ignore the topic. I find it really weird
and forcefully asked him again if something is wrong. After neglecting my questions several
times, he finally opened up and told me about the issues he is facing in his workplace since
last month. I heard him completely and then gave him advice accordingly.
Evaluation of listening strengths and weaknesses
I am good at observing people, as I observed and understood my brother’s regular
behaviour, speaking volume and pitch. It helped me to differentiate between his way of
talking in normal and abnormal situations. I also encourage the other person to open up by
asking questions and using different posture and body language. Another listening strength is
that, I listen to people without interrupting them. In the other hand my listening weakness is
that, sometimes I ignore the body language and unusual way of talking, as I should have
understood my brother’s issues earlier.
What I learned about my listening
I learned that I can distinguish people’s way of talking, tone and volume in their
different emotions. Discriminative listening enables an individual to identify the speaker’s
gender and number of people talking. Also, it identifies differences in accents, stresses, and
volume, thus helps to determine speaker’s emotion and understands speaker’s feeling
(Wolvin, 2018).

Description of listening experience
I started an online course to develop my technical skills. The course included several
webinars from experts all over the world. An online seminar was scheduled for that day. The
seminar started at scheduled time and we found that the lecturer had a different accent from
all the others. Many of the students left the seminar and some of the students were trying to
understand the lecture. I had heard the similar accent many times on radio when I was a kid. I
felt no difficulty to meet the basic need of listening. I understood most of the topics very well
and the seminar was productive for me. But for others, they struggle with comprehensive
listening and most of them failed to take any output from the seminar. Comprehensive
listening includes the understanding of words, language, and accent of the speaker to make it
productive (Tcagley, 2016).

On that day, my uncle and their friends visited our place. We were seated together and

religions. All of them were giving statements and their views on each religion, region, and
culture. I was unable to understand all their views and statements they passed. However, I
connected a few of them to my understanding. I have never been to this topic before. They
continuously asked me about my views to involve me in their discussion. So, I was dealing
with the topic about which I had only little knowledge. Lastly, I found the listening situation
becoming more difficult as the subject was out of my knowledge limits. Comprehensive
listening becomes difficult in case of interpersonal communication (S., 2013).

knowledge. I have never been in this type of conversation before. However, I was listening to
