Should voting be compulsory?
Introduction
“Should voting be compulsory” is a debatable topic. Voting is the right of the citizen of the
nation. The people of a nation elect their representative to run the nation peacefully and work
towards the growth and development of the nation and the people as well. The representative of a
nation represents the nation in other countries. They are responsible for bringing all the
necessary changes in the nation for the growth and development of the nation and its citizen.
Therefore, there is a need of electing a representative who can perform his duty honestly and
efficiently and effectively. If the representative of a nation is not good enough or not working for
the betterment of the nation the nation will go on the path of underdevelopment that may lead to
crime and injustice in the nation. There is only one way to elect a representative and that is
voting. But the matter is whether voting should be compulsory or not. The answer to the question
is yes voting should be compulsory. The people of the nation should also consider voting as their
right and duty towards the nation. What if not all the citizen are participating in voting and only a
few are electing a representative who will govern the nation? If hundred mad voting in favor of a
mad and 10 intellectuals are voting in favor of a right candidate. Will the right candidate be
considered a winner? No, the winner will be the mad person who will govern the intellectual.
Now we can think that what will be the situation if a mad is governing the intellectuals?
Therefore, every citizen of the nation must participate in the voting to elect a right candidate who
has the ability to run the nation in the right direction. And to make all the citizen participation in

the voting, voting should be compulsory until or unless a citizen of a nation considered voting as
their duty for the progress of the nation.
Discussion
Many people have died in a battle for their right against unethical or unlawful action by the
governing body. Thousands of people have suffered from injuries and even sent to jail for
appealing or raising their voice for their right. Right for a vote is one of the rights for that people
have died and been sent to jail. But many of the people consider making voting compulsory is
against the right of freedom. Voting is necessary to ensure the effective democracy in the nation
and also for the growth and development of the nation.
Communication Analysis
To conduct the interview close questioning technique has been used to obtain a clear opinion on
the topic “Should voting be compulsory.” The interviewer allowed the interviewee to present
his/her opinion in detail without any interruption. Most of the peoples are very interested in
casting their vote and also participated in the interview actively and talked about the voting right.
On the other hand some people said that voting should not be compulsory because many times
bad representative came in power by purchasing the vote of the labor class people. Throughout
the interview the body language, facial expression, proxemics, and haptic of the interviewee
analyzed. Non-verbal communication helps in getting true picture of the topic by analyzing the
expression of the interviewee. Sometimes the expression of the interviewee says something else
than the words of the interviewee. An interviewee might be agreeing by his/her words but his/her
expression might show that the interviewee is not agreeing regarding something.

Right to freedom
Should we need to redefine the concept of freedom? To what extent making vote compulsory
will harm the right of freedom? We need to think about these points. If voting is being
compulsory it does not mean that right of freedom is being violated. Freedom does not mean that
spending life as per own rules and regulation. Every individual has some kind of duty towards
the nation to make the nation develop. And among all the duties one duty that is most important
is electing a right candidate to run the nation in the right direction. And to elect a right candidate
the people of the nation have to cast their vote.
As far as the time and effort that is required for the casting of a vote is a concern it takes hardly a
day. It is the maximum limit of time and it does not harm anyone from any perspective. When
there is no harm in casting the vote all the citizen must cast their vote in favor of the right
candidate.
Politically engagement of the people
Whether or not politically engagement of people is necessary for the betterment of nation. It is
not a difficult question if we think about this question from the household point of view.
Meaning that the effort of only a single member of the family is not enough to uphold or raise
the living standard of the family in the same only a few persons cannot make a country great. To
make a country great every citizen of the country needs to contribute to the growth and
development of the country. Each and every citizen must consider himself as a responsible
citizen of the nation and must do whatever can do for the welfare of the nation. The minimum
effort that is required for the welfare of the nation that is casting the vote in favor of the right
person. If an individual is only casting his vote in favor of right candidate he is contributing

maximum in the growth and development of the nation. Therefore, there is a need of awareness
about the role of voting among the masses so that they consider voting as an essential part of
their life. And for the growth and development of a nation or to make a nation great politically
engagement of the people of the nation is necessary.
Right to fight for the rights
The basic right of all individuals irrespective of the religion, caste, color, race, and gender should
be ensured by the government. The primary responsibility of the government is to provide or
fulfill the basic requirement of every individual. These basic requirements are the fundamental
rights of the people. If the fundamental right is not being fulfilled by the government the people
need to raise the voice against the government. But the question is when and how can an
individual raise his voice for the rights. If all the citizen have participated in the election and
have cast their vote to elect the representative only then they can raise voice. Therefore, there is a
need to cast vote to raise the voice if necessary against the government. In this way, one can
ensure the right to fight for the rights.
Conclusion
Voting requires small effort from every citizen of the nation for making big changes and to pave
the way for the growth and development of the nation. There is no harm in casting the vote.
Casting vote instead of harming the individual gives them an option for raising their voice for
their rights. From every aspect of the nation such as socio-economic, and political there is a need
to elect a right candidate. And to do this we need to fully participate in the election. When there
are “n” of benefits and no harm in implementing this activity why should we ignore it?
Therefore, voting should be compulsory.

Recommendation
Following are the recommendation to increase the number of voter participants.
 Election Day should be declared a national holiday to attract more people to cast their vote.
Some people have the fear of economic consequences of losing a working day. To avoid this
consequence Election Day should be declared a national holiday or it should be on the
weekend day. But again people do not want to waste their weekend day in casting the vote,
therefore, it is better to be declared national holiday.
 The laws of voter ID should be abolished to make people more convenient to cast their vote.
Due to the complicated laws of voter ID, many of the people do not proceed for the voter ID.
Abolition of this law will encourage the people to participate in the election.
 There should a system of automatic registration of voter to make them convenient to cast
their vote.
 The place of casting vote should be convenient to the people so that they can easily get there.
 The state should provide accommodation facility to the people to cast their vote.
