General Guidelines
1. A Cover page or title page – You should always attach a title page to your assignment. Use previous
page as your cover sheet and be sure to fill the details correctly.

Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by
machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. Computer
science defines AI research as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its
environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals.

Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks
commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing
systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason,
discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience. Since the development of the digital
computer in the 1940s, it has been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very
complex tasks—as, for example, discovering proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess—with
great proficiency. Still, despite continuing advances in computer processing speed and memory capacity,
there are as yet no programs that can match human flexibility over wider domains or in tasks requiring
much everyday knowledge. On the other hand, some programs have attained the performance levels of
human experts and professionals in performing certain specific tasks, so that artificial intelligence in this
limited sense is found in applications as diverse as medical diagnosis, computer search engines, and voice
or handwriting recognition” (Copeland, 2019).
Artificial intelligence isn’t limited to chatboats and virtual assistants, as AI has been seamlessly making its
way into the car rental market for many years through the motor industry’s integration of said systems into
their range. AI is used on a daily basis through voice commands, smart satellite navigation, crash prevention
and autonomous drive systems. However, a certain level of Assisted Driving (AD) is currently available to

the mass market; with self-parking cars in use on a daily basis that have 360-degree sensors, complimented
by front and rear facing cameras, which allow the vehicle to position and park itself. These technologies
have been available for a number of years, but have been the preserve of luxury, high-end vehicles, which
appear in the premium section of most rental car fleets. However, Ford, keeping up with its historic
reputation of bringing exclusive technology to the masses, has included this system in its new Fiesta. This
car is armed with a night vision pedestrian detection system that is controlled by two cameras, three radars
and twelve ultrasonic sensors that monitor 360 degrees around the vehicle, scanning the road ahead up to a
distance of 130 meters. Utilizing this hardware the car will deliver brake interventions to prevent bumps,
will warn ahead of a possible collision, outline hidden pedestrians on the on-board computer and will also
park for the driver. Many of these systems exist without the driver’s knowledge, but can be key in avoiding
incidents, especially brake intervention and collision prevention systems” (Creagh, 2018).

Remember the old TV show "Knight Rider?" It was about a guy with a modified Pontiac Trans Am
named KITT that had a built-in computer brain and the ability to carry on intelligent conversations with its
driver. Obviously a lot of budding young automotive engineers watched the show, because today most cars
do indeed have computer brains and many can talk to their drivers. Admittedly, the conversational abilities
of most cars is limited to a set of voice commands (sometimes as many as 10,000 of them), and canned
responses that can be used to activate and control a few of the car's features -- especially the GPS, the
entertainment system, the environmental controls and mobile phone. But can it be long before your Prius
wants to have a chat with you about your stock portfolio or the odds on the Red Sox winning the next
World Series?
A lot of auto manufacturers now supply fully integrated in-vehicle communications and entertainment
systems in their cars and trucks, like Ford's SYNC and Fiat's Blue&Me, that not only provide a common
interface to most of the car's electronic functions but also voice recognition software that can be used to
control those systems through an elaborate set of commands. The number of commands that these systems
can understand is growing by the day and it would likely take a small manual to list them all. (In fact, such
a manual may have come with your car.) On the next several pages we'll look at some of the most useful of
these commands to see what they can actually do now, and what they may be capable of in the near future”

Research philosophy is a vast topic and here we will not be discussing this topic in great details. In
business and economics dissertations at Bachelor’s level, you are not expected to discuss research
philosophy in a great level of depth, and about one page in methodology chapter devoted to research
philosophy usually suffices. For a business dissertation at Master’s level you may need to provide more
discussion of the philosophy of your study, but even there, about two pages of discussions has to be
accepted as sufficient by your supervisor.
Discussion of research philosophy in your dissertation should include the following:
You need to specify the research philosophy of your study. Your research philosophy can be
pragmatism, positivism, realism or interpretivism as discussed below.
The reasons behind philosophical classifications of the study need to be provided.

methodology in order to facilitate the hypothesis. Furthermore, positivism works on quantifiable
observations and accordingly statistical analysis is obtained (GuhaThakurta & Chetty, 2015).
Research Approach
Research approach is a plan and procedure that consists of the steps of broad assumptions to detailed
method of data collection, analysis and interpretation. It is therefore, based on the nature of the research
problem being addressed. Research approach is essentially divided into two categories:

Qualitative data requires an inductive approach of analysis. On the other hand quantitative data uses
deductive approach. In mixed type of data, both inductive and deductive approaches of analysis are
utilized. However, there should be some consistency between methods, methodology and analysis. This
is important in order to demonstrate logic. Thus, in order to make the research credible to the reader the
research should lead towards the research findings” (Chetty, 2016).

A Research Strategy is a step-by-step plan of action that gives direction to your thoughts and efforts,
enabling you to conduct research systematically and on schedule to produce quality results and detailed
reporting. This enables one to stay focused, reduce frustration, enhance quality and most importantly, save

Cross-sectional studies
A study can be undertaken in which data are gathered just once, perhaps over a period of days or weeks or months, in
order to answer a research question. Such studies are called one-shot or cross-sectional studies.
Longitudinal studies
In some cases, however, the researcher might want to study people or phenomena at more than one point in time in
order to answer the research question. For instance, the researcher might want to study employees’ behavior before
and after a change in the top management, so as to know what effects the change accomplished. Here, because data
are gathered at two different points in time, the study is no cross-sectional or of the one-shot kind, but is carried
longitudinally across a period of time. Such studies, as when data on the dependent variable are gathered at two or
more points in time to answer the research question, are called longitudinal studies” (chat, 2016).
Research techniques
Selection of the right research technique(s) is one of the key factors deciding the methodological rationale
of the research and subsequent analysis. Each of the individual techniques used to obtain data is linked to
specific analysis and interpretation processes. Not every technique can be used to transpose the results
obtained directly onto the pool of research subjects. A research technique and, subsequently, the research
sample, should be defined with the research objectives firmly in mind.
It is increasingly common for researchers and academics to combine multiple techniques within a single
research project (Mixed-Mode Data Collection). This approach helps to reduce mistakes and
inconsistencies that can arise due to the sample’s structure, population coverage and absence of responses.
Each data collection technique has its strengths and weaknesses. Devoting sufficient time to selecting the
right techniques during the research preparation phase will help eliminate mistakes during the measurement
and analysis stages.

The theoretical framework leads into the conceptual framework, which is a specific exploration of an
