AI Summary
This essay delves into the significance of concept analysis within the nursing field, defining it as a process of dissecting and scrutinizing core elements of a concept. It outlines the phases of concept analysis, including concept identification, attribute recognition, and the determination of antecedents and consequences. The essay emphasizes the critical role of concept analysis in enhancing nursing practice by fostering concept clarity, establishing a common language among nurses, and serving as a cornerstone for nursing research. It highlights how understanding and integrating concept analysis can lead to improved patient care through evidence-based interventions and the ability to evaluate concepts effectively. The author recommends integrating concept analysis into nursing curricula to encourage evidence-based research and better prepare nurses to understand and address evolving healthcare concepts.

1CONCEPT ANALYSIS IN NURSING
Role of Concept Analysis in the Nursing field and its integration in the practice of nursing
The word “concept” can be defined as the building block of a broader spectrum and
forms the basis of what a researcher wants to pursue. Concept analysis can be defined as the
process of dividing and analyzing the basic elements of the concept. According to Roger’s
approach of concept analysis it is necessary to name the concepts.
Phases of concept analysis
The different phases of concept analysis are- Identification and the naming of the
concepts, identification of the surrogate terms and the relevant use of the concepts and selection
of an appropriate realm for the collection of the data, recognition of the attributes of the concept,
ascertaining the references, antecedents and consequences of the concepts, identification of the
concept related to the concept of interest and generation of the model case of the concept.
The initial phase of the concept analysis commences with a brief introduction of the
concept that has to be analyzed, including the summary of the personal practice, influences and
interests. Hence a spontaneous approach has to be incorporated (Rodgers, Jacelon & Knafl,
2018).
An evidence based search should be undertaken, by the use of the pertinent databases and
a varied time frame and the exact factors will be set in compliance with the seminal work. The
different concept are then discussed by the use of the surrogate terms. Finally the attributes of
the concept are identified. The points are organized, and reorganized unless a comprehensive,
cohesive and relevant system are generated. Finally the references, antecedent and the

consequences of the concepts are identified (Bergdahl & Berterö, 2016). The references are
given in order to identify the array of circumstances, phenomena where the concepts can be
considered. The concepts related to the concept of interest are identified. Finally a model case
has to be constructed illustrating the different attributes.
Importance of integration of concept analysis in nursing
According to Bergdahl & Berterö, (2016), the main utilization of the concept analysis is
to analyze, grow, describe and appraise a concept. This helps in understanding the conceptual
and the theoretical underpinnings of the phenomena that has to be researched. An important aim
of the concept analysis is the identification of the characteristics of the concept. Ramezani et al.,
(2015) have claimed that concepts are the building blocks that has to be designed to give rise to a
theory. Hence any nursing theory cannot be built without a clear understanding of this building
blocks. The concept analysis is an ideal tool of the navigation of the multifarious nature of the
concepts and establish the meanings related to the mutual usage.
Analysis of the concepts in nursing would help the nurses to recognize and evaluate the
incidence of a particular concept, such that the approaches for the interventions could be planned
that would benefit the patient. According to Rodgers, Jacelon & Knafl, (2018), the use of the
concept analysis helps nurses to gain concept clarity. Concept analysis helps to foster a common
language among the nurses. It is used in the beginning and the preparatory stages of the nursing
research. As per the studies, the crux of nursing is personal understanding or the individual
understanding of personal health and the wellbeing, of the medicine is technical and the
procedural knowing, and of the behavioral health is known as the cognitive process (Delves-
Yates, Stockl & Moore, 2018). An understanding of how the concepts are used in disciplines is

critically important for the nurse researchers, who borrow different instruments of research from
the other discipline. For example, the empathy quotient was formed by Simon Baron- Cohen as
the diagnostic tool for differentiating between the cognitive processes related to empathy in the
normal-functioning adults suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. The concept analysis is useful in
the diagnostic procedures.
Concept analysis should be integrated in nursing in the initial phase of nursing. Concept
analysis should be introduced in the nursing curriculum that will help the nurses to devote their
time in evidence based research (Dinmohammadi, Peyrovi & Mehrdad, 2013, January). The
nurse educators would encourage the students to perform concept analysis of any theory or
practice. It can be concluded that concept analysis is not a finished product. Concept changes
with time as we live in and it affects the utilization of the concept of the researchers. It is
recommended that the nurse educators emphasize on the changing nursing concepts and educate
the students about analysis of an issue.
