Communication challenges in academic settings
A) INTRODUCTION:
Academic settings present communication challenges since people are supposed to communicate
in a way that not only passes the message but rather increases comprehension and the ability of
the individual to get the message, but rather the message is supposed to be comprehended for the
intended academic purpose (Ozmen, Akuzum, & Zincirli, 2016, p. 29). This means that teachers
face several academic communication barriers within the environment that they operate in. This
survey seeks to explore these barriers and proposes the use of ICT technology as a solution.

From the SWOC analysis, the opportunity that will be discussed is the use of ICT as the best way
that allows teachers and students to communicate well. In this case, it means that the learning
environment needs to understand the importance of communication technologies in addressing
the barriers that are experienced.
Secondary Research
Ozmen, Akuzum, & Zincirli (2016) study reported that several communication challenges within
the learning environment make it difficult for teachers to communicate with students. These
barriers relate to lack of time, appropriate technology and cultural barriers. These factors affect
the learning environment and the relationship between the teacher and learners. This calls for the
need to put measures in place for developing communication technologies within the school
environment to increase communication. Since communication is two-way traffic then it means
that the focus should be on enhancing peer to peer communication and student-teacher
communication.
To address this problem Mbugua, Kiboss, & Tanui (2015, p.7) study suggested that ICT can be
used as a communication improvement tool in academic settings. ICT is regarded as having the
capacity to develop and empower students within academic environments through enhanced
teaching and communication outcomes. In this case, teachers use the different ICT platforms that

exist to provide the best way of dealing with the communication issues that exist. Integrating ICT
in communication ensures that information is adequately transmitted from one source to another
easily thus increasing the ability of the learners and teachers to communicate well.
Pinto, Fernandez-Pascual, & Sales (2018, p.4) suggests that learners need to understand that
communication competence is essential in every aspect of life. This is due to the evolution of the
internet as an information tool that allows people to connect and communicate on a different
platform. The ICT environment has changed the way of communication-dissemination in a
transversal setting (Pinto, Fernandez-Pascual, & Sales, 2018, p.6). The level of competence
among students varies from individual to individual due to cultural barriers and competencies
that make it difficult for communication. Thus the use of ICT in communication environments
ensures that people can easily communicate and share information across different platforms.
C. CONCLUSIONS
There are communication barriers that affect the ability to communicate in academic settings.
These barriers are influenced by the fact that there are challenges in the dissemination of
information between learners and teachers and teachers themselves. ICT has been proposed as
one of the solutions for addressing the problems that are faced in a learning environment since it
provides an integrated environment for communication. This is because ICT communication
issues within the learning environment can be addressed thus increasing the ability of the
individual to deal with the issues that exist. By using ICT, learners develop better competencies
that can lead to improved communication within the learning environment. This research thus
proposes the integration of ICT within the learning environment improve communication.
