INTRODUCTION
Conference and banqueting management is an event which conducts various events such
as party, cocktail night, meetings, etc. by effectively complying with various other other rules
and regulations.
This study will highlight, nature of the hospitality industry in conference and banqueting
sector. It will highlight size and worth of the hospitality industry. This study also includes
various types of events conducted by the conference and banqueting sector. It will further
evaluate the socio- cultural, political, economic, environmental, legal and technological factors
for future growth and development of the hospitality industry. This study will helps in evaluating
the strategic and operational issues which are involved in the conference and banqueting events.
This study will also include, financial, marketing and legal consideration to comply with
various laws and legislations in order for smooth functioning of the business. It will further
include performance and quality evaluation of all the various techniques. Furthermore, this study
will food protection system, food protection styles, food and beverage service, off- site
consideration and menu planning. Furthermore, this study will also include, ergonomic
considerations in the organization of conference and banquet hall event.

1.1 Nature, scale and scope of the conference and banqueting sector.
Hospitality industry is one of the most significant and vital industry. It is a global
industry which focuses on conducting an event in different centres across the globe. The scope of
the conference and banqueting industry is too wide which focuses on bringing together large
number of people for a particular event by providing the best quality services. The hospitality
industry provides various benefits to the industry such as financial growth, economic growth,
employment opportunities, etc. The approx estimation is around 94 million in the year 2009 who
attended specific events (Seal and Mattimoe, 2017.). The hospitality industry conducts various
events which leads to higher generation of profits and revenue for future growth and
development. There re approximately around 8000 conference and banquet venues in the UK in
the year 2009, that mainly work with large hotel group such as Best Western, Marriott and
Hilton. A conference event is conducted for the professional meetings, exhibition, fairs, galas,
exchange of information, consultation, trade shows, seminars, appreciation events, etc. This is
conducted for sharing new idea, any kind of public announcement, launch new product,

communication with employees, etc. This sector is one of the third largest revenue and profit
generation sector for future sustainable growth and development (Rahimi, 2017). Banquets
events are events conducted by individuals for events such as marriages, reception, buffet, family
get together, party, birthday celebrations, cocktail nights, etc. Conference events are conducted
for more professional events such as business events, there are large number of hotels which
conduct conference and banquet events. There are various facilities provided by hospitality
industry which mainly consists of free Wi-Fi, event facilities, high quality services, food and
beverages, air conditioned, valet services, etc. The conference and banqueting sector mainly
consists of festivals, business meetings, trade fairs, sports events, cultural events, outdoor events,
community events, fundraising and charity programmes, graduation ceremonies, parties, lifetime
achievement programmes, special events, etc. Conference and banqueting industry is one of the
emerging industry which has yielded around 39.1 billion pounds in the year 2013. It is one of the
growing industry and it is very beneficial for the financial growth of the industry and economy
growth of the UK (Chibili, 2017).
1.2 Factors influencing the growth of the industry.
Socio-cultural factors: There are various social and cultural factors like change in
customer preference, current market trend, behaviour, values and ethics of the individual.
Lifestyle attitude, cultural barriers, language barriers, education, safety emphasis, age
distribution, population growth rate, etc. largely influence the growth and development of the
hospitality industry. Changing in accordance with the current market trend helps in higher
performance and productivity of the conference and banquet sector.
Economic factors: There are various economic factors such as lower employment rate,
disposable income, economic growth rate, wage rate, interest rate, financial capabilities, inflation
rate, taxation, etc. largely influence the operations of the hospitality industry. Higher inflation,
interest and exchange rate and unemployment rate impose adverse effect on the growth and
success of the conference and banquet sector (Owusu-Mintah and Dacosta, 2017). Lower
disposable incomes and ineffective financial capabilities also impose negative impact on the
development of this sector.
Political factors: There are various political factors such as change in government
polices, rules and regulations, trade restrictions, terrorism, labour laws, tax policy, corruption,

etc. hampers the efficiency of the business which leads lower operational efficiency on the
hospitality industry.
Technological factors: There are various technological factors such as emerging
technologies, target market, research and development activity, technology incentives,
automation, technological awareness, level of innovation, etc. Technology is changing at a faster
pace and it needs to comply with various software and solutions for long term growth of the
hospitality industry.
Environmental factors: There are various environmental factors such as climate,
weather, environmental legislation, business ethics, business sustainability, effective training,
etc. ethical business, practice, sustainability and compliance with corporate social responsibility
leads to higher performance, efficiency and productivity (Gruenfeldova, Domijan and Walsh,
2019).
Legal factors: There are various legal factors such as health and safety law, employment
law, consumer law, competitive legislations, safety standards, discrimination law, patents and
copyright law, etc. The hospitality industry must comply with various legal laws and legislations
for smooth functioning of the organization for future development of conference and banquet
sector.

2.1 Strategic issues involved in the conference and banquet sector.
Hospitality industry is one of the third largest operating sector and is the major
contributor for Conference and banquet sector for various programs and events. There are
various strategic issues faced by this sector which mainly includes:
Adherence with various government laws, polices, rules and legislations for smooth
functioning of the business.
Compliance with various standards for health and safety, hygiene and food production
system. Effective cultural environment and positive workforce employment is a major
challenge for the business (Kosmieja and Paslawski, 2016).
Procurement of resources and selection of an appropriate manpower at the right time is a
major challenge for the Conference and banquet sector.
Maintaining business ethics and compliance with corporate social responsibility is a
major challenge for the Conference and banquet sector.

Marketing and sales operation is also a major challenge for the business.
Continuous change in the laws, policies and standards of the company hampers the
efficiency of the business.
Pricing and packaging : The hospitality industry must focus on maintaining
administrative fact sheets, function sheets, discounting initiatives, space utilization, pricing and
packaging, booking diary, contracts and discounting initiatives (Park,and et.al., 2016). Pricing
and packaging strategy helps in effectively evaluating the value and price add to events and
programmes. This is an effective strategy which helps in analysing the price of the competitors
and attractive decoration and customized touch helps in attracting more customers.
Discounts: Offering attractive discount to customers helps in attracting large number of
customers from across the globe (Pantelidis, 2018). This helps in offering effective services at
an affordable price. Another strategic method such as mapping the business in compliance with
the goal and objectives helps in meeting target on a timely manner.
Licensing laws: Compliance with various laws, legislations, regulations and standards
helps in smooth functioning of the business. Compliance with health and safety work Act 1974,
is an act of the UK which states effective guidelines for health and safety enforcement at
workplace. Proper temperature, hygiene, ventilation, risk reduction must be measured in order to
produce effective results and outcomes. This act focuses on giving safe work force environment,
effective welfare provision, adequate training and development programmes, etc. helps in
maintaining positive workforce environment (McCallaghan, 2015). Giving proper guidelines to
the employees helps in handling various events conducted by Conference and banquet sector .
Cultural and religious guidelines: every culture and religious must be inclined together
which helps in managing various culture and values effectively and efficiently. Specific
guidelines must be set. Proper protocol must be set for different occasions, seating plan,
ceremonies, weddings, room design and formal dinners.
2.2 Performance and quality review techniques in conference and banquet sector.
Compliance with proper guidelines, arrangement of program, high quality goods,
availability of prospective employees, maintaining automatic and technical operations helps in
reviewing the performance and quality of the conference and banquet sector.
Total quality management technique: Working on total quality management technique
helps in improvising the overall quality and performance of the conference and banquet sector. It

mainly focuses on customers, strategic approach to management, teamwork. This technique leads
to continuous improvement and future growth of the sector.
Budget review: Complete budget must be set in order to effectively review the cash
requirements to carry out the particular event in an effective manner (O’Reilly, 2015). It helps in
effectively evaluating the cost of each activity in order to reach higher results ad outcomes. This
leads to smooth functioning of the business. This method helps in effective evaluation of the
profits realized and also helps in controlling cost and expenses in an efficient manner.
Closed loop evaluation method: This is an effective method of closely evaluating the
function and operations of the business. This helps in planning, directing, controlling and
monitoring the activities of the staff in order to accomplish the task on a timely manner.
Venue appraisal: It is an effective technique which helps in reviewing the needs and
preference of the customer and selecting the venue accordingly (Wood, 2017). Attractive
decoration, proper goods and services, table plan, decoration, guest evaluation are reviewed
effectively for smooth functioning of the business effectively and efficiently.

From the above conducted study it has been summarized that, Catering and banquet
management is a sector of hospitality industry which focuses on conducting various events such
as marriages, family get together, reception, buffet, cocktail nights, party, birthday celebrations,
business meetings, trade fairs, outdoor events, community events, sports events, cultural events,
fundraising and charity programmes, lifetime achievement programmes, graduation ceremonies,
parties, special events, etc. This study further concludes various external environmental factors
such as political, economic, socio- cultural, legal environmental and technological factors.
This study will further evaluate the strategic issues involved in the conference and
banquet sector. This mainly consists of Compliance with various standards, laws, policies and
legislations. This study has considered various strategic ways such as Pricing and packaging
strategy, Discounts, compliance with laws and standards, setting cultural and regional guidelines
