INTRODUCTION
Research can be defined as a systematic study which is performed by researcher or
scholars in order to gaining in-depth information about the topic. Several activities has to be
performed by the investigator within the research so that a valid conclusion can be made at the
end of research programme. These activities includes data collection, analysis, presentation of
data etc. that provides complete information about the selected topic of study. Along with it,
research project specification is a blue print of resources that are needed by investigator for
completing the research programme. This research is based on conflict management and its
impact on the performance of Holiday Inn.
Overview of research
Conflicts can be defined as an error which are occurred at workplace among the
employees which impacts negatively on overall profitability of firm. Apart from that conflict
management is a process of making strategies or policies so that negative effects of conflicts can
be overcome easily. A large number of employees are working within the organisation so that
organisational goals and objectives can be achieved easily therefore, it is the prior
responsibilities of managers to frame some effective policies so that conflicts or issues can be
resolved in easy manner. This will prove beneficial as through it workers of organisation will
provide more contribution in completing given work which will leads the firm towards
competitive edge in marketplace. Present research is based on Holiday Inn which is a British-
owned American brand of hotels (Bamiatzi and et. al., 2016).
Background of Research
The hotel was founded in 1952 and its headquarters are situated in Denham, UK. This is
the part of Inter Continental hotel which is a multinational hospitality organisation across the
world. The group was founded by Kemmons Wilson due to disappointing by poor quality of
accommodation services during the road trip. Now, approximate 1100 branches of hotel are
providing accommodation, lodging, food and beverage services across the world. Now it is also
termed as the largest hotel chain across the world. Its offering includes food and beverage,

accommodation, bar, Spa, and several other facilities which ensures satisfaction of customer
during their stay in hotel. Nowadays, customer's demands and needs are changing over a time
due to which several modifications are needed at workplace so that needs of customers can be
satisfied in effective manner. There are several employees who belongs from different culture
and having difference in languages are providing their services in hotel (Bradley, Anderson and
et. al., 2015). Due to this, conflicts can be arise at workplace which can impact on the brand
image and profitability of organisation.
Rationale of research
Main reason behind conducting this investigation is to determine the significance of
conflict management. Through completing this research, investigator will be able in raising its
understanding about the techniques of conflict management that can be used by organisation for
improving productivity and profitability of firm. With the help of this topic, researcher will be
able in providing better solution to the organisation which will leads positive environment at
workplace. With the help of this study, investigator will be able in finding more relevant
informations about the conflict management which will be beneficial for them in completing
future research programmes on same topic of study in easy manner.
Statement of Research Problem
Main problem which is facing by Holiday Inn is related with conflicts which are arising
at workplace and providing negative influences on overall growth and profitability of
organisation. For solving this problem, managers have decided to conduct a investigation so that
cause of conflicts can be determined and the ways of removing this conflicts from workplace.
Because through managing conflicts healthy environment will be established at workplace and
lost brand image can be recovered properly. Apart from that, researcher have chosen this topic
which is new and relevant with each organisation because conflicts are those risks that are
uncertain in nature and can arise at workplace anytime. As the topic is new for researcher then it
is very essential for them to manage each resources properly so that any problem or difficulty
not be faced by them during research. Whereas, there are several problems that can be faced by
investigator during the research are related with irresponsive nature of respondents, lack of
communication or time period. Therefore, investigator should prepare themselves for these
problems before conducting the research programme so that desired objectives and valid
outcomes can be obtained at the end of research.

handling and dissolving them. Managing conflict is a essential as it may lead to lower
productivity and decreased morale of the personnel. To manage conflicts an organisation is
required to establish a team consisting of member who are highly skilled and knowledgable and
are able to form rules and regulation in order to reduce the level of conflicts. The main aim
behind conflicts management is to enhance learning and group items, including effectiveness in
an organisational settings (What Is Conflict Management? - Definition, Styles & Strategies,
2018). Conflict management refers to the process we manage incompatible actions with others,
where other can be a person or a group of person. It is generally a component of interpersonal
interactions. In conflict management , conflicts are mostly a situation of mixed motive because
here both are parties have similar desire to compete with each other on there part. Conflicts can
be of different types it may be related to task, process, working situations etc. to resolve these
disputes a series of deliberate actions are considered which is known as conflicts management.

ways. The company like Holiday Inn has adopted this strategy of conflict management to
dissolve all the disputes between parties, employer and employee’s and the organisation.
Managing conflict in Holiday Inn has lead the operation and activities of Holiday Inn to an
extreme level. Various methods that helped Holiday Inn to manage the conflict and increase
their productivity and profitability are as follows :
Collaborating or problem solving – This technique states that the team is already in
performing or adjourning stage of team development . The conflict management department of
Holiday inn has adopted this technique to ensure that all the worker are performing in a
harmonious way by trusting on each other towards the achievement of organisational goal so
that it can create a positive impact to the growth in productivity and profitability.
Compromising- Here both the parties comes with mutual understanding to resolve the
conflicts. compromising has lead a positive impact to the conflicts management system as the
company like Holiday Inn doesn't have to bear a cost of resolving the conflict by specialist or
expertise which has higher their profitability.
Smoothing : It is a temporary method to resolve the problem for the work rather then
solving the actual issue. It has enhanced the productivity and profitability of the Holiday Inn as
the conflict between the parties did not hinder the working of the company.
Forcing: The company , Holiday inn have adopted this just to reach at some point of
decision so that it does not affect their working and organisational productivity and
profitability .
Withdraw or avoid : This has helped the company to maintain their level of
performance as the member here feel frustrated and skip their matter of conflicts and works
effectively towards increasing the organisations productivity and profitability.

Conflicts management involves battle between the parties. Their are various factors
which causes conflicts in an organisation such as differences of opinion of the parties. However
all the disputes are not negative rather creative . It provides innovative ideas which helps the

Holiday inn must know the factors that causes conflicts so as to find out the appropriate
solutions to resolve the conflicts. Hence , there are different challenges that The Holiday Inn
undergo to resolve the disputes within the organisation. These challenges are mentioned below :-
Communication block: This is the biggest problem that companies are facing and has
become a challenge for the organisation. The HR manger of the Holiday Inn has to face this
problem while resolving the disputes, as communication block occurs due to informal flow of
information due to which the exact information remains in-conveyed to the manager and the
solution expressed to the employee's is not that effective as it should be. This may lower the
profitability and productivity of the organisation.
Status struggle : Under this, it is concern with that some team member does not provide
proper coordination and support to each other due to their status problem which hinder Hotel
manager to implement best strategic decisions in order to bring high level of productivity.
CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology can be defined as an important approach that is used by
investigators for analysing proper information or data about the topic of study. It can also
considered as the most important part of investigation that defines methods of research which
will be used by investigator for completing the research programme. This is a systematic study
that supports the investigator in identifying the wasy from which relevant information about the
topic of study will be gathered. In addition to this, it also includes justification and analysis of
data, techniques of data collection, ethics of research etc. which enables the researcher in
completing the research programme through utilising the resources in optimal manner.
Research philosophy: It can be considered as a belief that provides the way to researcher
of gathering, analysing or interpreting the data. It is categorised in two parts such as positivism
and interpretivism in which positivism is less used by researcher because it does not provide
better outcomes at the end of research. Whereas, interpretivism is very popular philosophy and
highly used by investigator so as to getting effective outcomes at the end of research.
Research Approach: It refers to a plan or process that includes several steps which helps
the investigator in reaching towards better outcomes at the end of study. There are mainly two
kind of approaches are used by investigator i.e. inductive and deductive so that in-depth
information about the topic of research can be gained. In this project, inductive approach is

Basically two methods are used in research programmes such as quantitative and qualitative by
researcher so that valid and reliable data can be gathered for the research programme. In
qualitative method researcher have to gathered informations in quality manner in terms of
behavioural expressions of respondents whereas, in quantitative data is collected in form of
statistical manner. Both methods having unique features and can be used by investigator for
completing the research easily. In this project, qualitative method is used by investigator so that
positive response can be gathered by investigator from selected respondents (Husemann and et.
al., 2015).
Time Horizon: It can be determined as an essential aspect of overall research programme
as without it, investigator can't able in managing research activities in given time-frame due to
which desired objectives wouldn't be achieved in easy manner. For managing time researcher
can use Gantt chart as through it they will be able in performing research activities within the
given time-frame which automatically leads them towards completion of project. For completing
this project, researcher have decided a time period of 2 months.
Research design: This is also an effective structure or systematic plan that helps the
researcher in completing the project in effective manner. It is segmented in three parts i.e.
descriptive, experimental and exploratory. All of them are beneficial and provide supports the
investigator in effectively evaluating the elements and variables but for completing this project,
descriptive design of research will be used by researcher because, through using it views and
opinions of respondents will be interpreted in effective manner.
Sources of data: Mainly two kind of data collection i.e. primary and secondary are used
by researcher so that better outcomes will be received at the end of research programme. Primary
data is refers to those data which has not been collected or used by anyone and its relevancy is
very high than the other data collection methods. For collecting this kind of information
researcher can frame questionnaire or conduct personal interviews. Apart from that, secondary
data collection method are used by researcher when the researcher having less time period and

this kind are less authentic and reliable then primary methods. So that, it can be said that both of
these methods are beneficial for investigator as they helps in gaining reliable informations about
the topic of research but in this project researcher have used questionnaire method for collecting
primary kind of informations. Questionnaire is a written document in which some questions
related with research topic are asked by respondents so that their actual views or opinions can be
gathered for completing the research (Maskell, Baggaley and Grasso, 2016).
Sampling: Sampling is a process in which some respondents are selected by researcher
who will provide better response regarding the taken project. In other words, it is an effective
technique because without it researcher can't complete the research programme effectively. Two
kind of techniques are basically used by investigator for gathering samples such as probability
and non-probability. In this project, researcher have decided to use simple random sampling
method in which 30 respondents are selected by them because with the help of it they will be
able in completing the research programme in effective manner.
Research ethics- It is related with moral values that should be adopted by researcher so
that research can be conducted effectively. It should be considered by researcher effectively
while conducting research because through it they will be able in gathering or analysing the
informations on the basis of relevancy with the topic. It also supports the investigator in
completing research programme without using unethical practices (Noe and et. al., 2017).
Research limitation- There are several elements such as selecting respondents, collecting
data etc. that supports the investigator in completing the research programme effectively. In this
research programme, limitation of time can be faced by the researcher during the research
programme because the questionnaire and gathering views and opinions of respondents is very
time consuming that can limits the researcher by completing research.
Research reliability and validity- This investigation is done by researcher in effective
manner by using effective tools and techniques. All the chosen respondents have good
knowledge regarding the topic which will supports the researcher in framing valid and reliable
conclusion at the end of research.
Research budget- Several resources such as internet connection, mobile phone,
stationary are needed by researcher so as to completing the investigation easily. For completing
this project, researcher have estimated an amount of £3000.

Data analysis can be defined as a systematic process that helps the researcher in
gathering, interpreting or analysing the data in proper manner. Analysis of data is very important
because without it conclusion or recommendation can't be provided at the end of project which
shows failure of project. Thematic analysis is used in this project which will provide better
information regarding the topic of study to researcher that improves their understanding
regarding the conflict management.
