Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This document presents a detailed carpentry take-off for the garage area (Rooms 100) of the Huron County Ambulance Station. The assignment, part of CONS1010 Introduction to Cost Estimating, requires a comprehensive analysis of the building's framing materials. The take-off includes calculations for 2x6 stud framing (16” c/c), 5/8” plywood sheathing, and air barriers, along with incidental carpentry items. The solution provides a step-by-step approach to estimating the quantities of materials required, including studs, horizontal blocking, plywood sheathing, and air barriers, using the provided dimensions and formulas. The document also includes a takeoff list, quantity sheet and calculation procedures, ensuring accurate cost estimation. This assignment emphasizes practical application of cost estimating principles in a construction project, providing students with essential skills for the field. The take-off is done in lineal and square feet, with detailed calculations for the perimeter, stud spacing, and areas of openings. Fasteners are also estimated based on the lineal feet of the framing materials.

TAKE-OFF LIST
Takeoff list is the most required components of any of project. They gives both the client and
the contractor the outline of the total material cost required for the contract. Takeoffs varies from
simple to complex depending on the size and scope of the project. Due to its importance of cost
estimation, this article sheds light on how a construction takeoff is crafted and the core
components of takeoff are, and what some factors are you should consider when creating that
takeoff.
Carpentry estimate sheet is also used in the estimation of both the exterior and interior framing,
cabinet and finishes of carpentry. To determine the rough estimate the materials to be used are
listed first with their functions and the parts in which they are used and then calculation is done
to get the estimate quantity.
Below is a take-off of carpentry framing of the interior walls of the garage of Huron County
Ambulance Station encompassing Rooms 100 including all the walls.
Requirements
1. Stud framing
This is the vertical frame in a building of the wall with a small cross section than a post and they
are used to carry the vertical structural loads. They holds in place the windows, doors, insulation
and interior finishing. They are slender than posts and beams .They also fastened to the plates to
prevent the building from lifted off by severe wind and earthquake.
2. plywood sheathing
This is the layer of material attached to the frame of the roof, floor and wall assembled on the
residential and commercial construction.it is used to form the surface in which materials can be
applied. Plywood sheathing is made of layers made up of very thin ply or wood that are glued
together from the surface is made of hardwood while inside is of softwood.

3. Air Barrier
It is a membrane attached to control air leakage into and out of the building. It is an essential
component in a building enclosing the air pressure and ensures comfortable environment within
the building. It is divided into air barrier material, air accessories, barrier system, and air barrier
component and air assemblies. They takes a lot of forms which can be mechanically membrane,
self-adhered, fluid applied, closed cell medium and polyurethane.
4. Sill foam gasket
It is a polyethylene that provides a sealing against air leakage, insect intrusion and moisture
between the foundation wall and the sill plate.
5. Items incidental to the framing
These are the necessary requirement in carpentry but they do not require an illustration or
description because they are either used in small quantity or their price is relatively small.
Example of incidental carpentry items include nails, plywood gum and other tools used.
How to estimate framing materials.
Construction materials estimation starts with counting of the frame lumbers .for the wall we
count the number of stud, horizontal plates for both top and bottom of the wall and the number of
sheets of the required for the interior side of the wall.
The takeoff of carpentry construction is first done by sketching the wall frame and identify
overall height and length of the wall and sizes of opening like doors and windows. The following
is the interior plan of different section within the office.
1. Interior plans of different sections of the garage
The dimensions of the interior part of the garage that needs to be furnished is; length is 50.50
feet, width 36.25 feet and the height is 14 feet as shown in the diagram below.

2. Calculating the studs.
The number of studs required for the project is calculated by use of this procedure; the total wall
length is determined in feet, add 3 for each stud in each corner that is 90o and add four to
45ocorners.2 studs are added for each intersection or an opening that is 5feet wide and one stud to
opening 5 feet wide and to the total add 15 % for wasted material.
3. Estimating the plywood sheathing.
To calculate the number of 5 by 8 inches sheets of sheathing required for framing, first the area
of the wall is determined and then the area of openings is subtracted the remaining area divided
by 40 and value rounded to nearest whole number which is the number of sheets to cover the
whole area.
Calculation
Perimeter of the floor and the ceiling = 2(50.50 + 36.25) =173.5 ft.
Perimeter of the left and right walls of the garage= 2(36.25 + 14) =100.5 ft.
Perimeter of the top and lower part of the garage = (50.50 + 36.25 +36.25) =123 ft.
(The lower part of the wall is open)
The distance between studs is 1.4 ft.
