Health and Safety in Trench Digging and Excavation
When the Minister of Labor (MOL) arrives at a construction site, they look at the site layout
for the general conditions of the ground to determine the type of soil dealt at the site. They also
check on the traffic conditions in case the construction is road work and then proceeds to speak
to the supervisor in charge of the construction about the safety of the workers. The excavation
project has a number of hazards associated with it, including contact with overhead power lines,
disruption of buried utilities and services as well as getting trapped by the weight of soil that
might collapse from the trench walls during caving of the trench (Trench Digging and

Before starting a construction locates must be made for any buried services like gas and
electrical utilities. The constructor must also identify the type of soil they are dealing with to
come up with a proper protective measure for their safety. The protective measures may include
the use of a trench box if the soil is loose and sloping the excavation walls adequately. It is worth
noting that the excavation material must be kept at least one meter away from the excavation
edge to avoid posing extra pressure on the excavation walls; this would prevent collapsing of the
walls. The excavation process can be affected by several conditions including weather
conditions, vibrations as result of traffic from nearby roads and equipment working in the
vicinity of the excavation.
The excavation supervisor is responsible for performing daily inspections of the measures that
have been put in place, checking at the ground conditions for cracks as well as ensuring that
steps taken are defect-free and remain defect-free during the excavation period. When working in
a trench box it is recommended that at least one person should be outside the trench to initiate an

emergency response in case of an accident. The process of entering and exiting channel requires
a robust ladder to prevent accidents that may occur during the process.
