INTRODUCTION
Contemporary issues are the major issues which are related to the current or present issue
of country or area and which is affecting social environment as well as people who are related to
them. This report elaborates about contemporary social issue topic “Individual and addictive
behaviour” in which different types of addiction are discussed such as gambling, drugs, alcohol
and nicotine. Further self reflection is going to be elaborated in order to find out actual strength
and weakness of individual.
TASK
1. Individual and addictive behaviour
Social issues are considered as one of the common problem or barrier in growth of
individual and its country. It not only affect particular person but also influences the life of those
individuals who are related to it.
Addiction refers to the psychological or physical requirement of individual, for the
person who is habitual and want it to that extent which might be harmful. It can be of anything
through which individual is related to excessive level (Best, 2017). Addiction of anything is
harmful for the person as it affects physical health as well as behaviour of person. It can be said
that addiction originates from the Psychology of individual which influences them towards it.
Addictive behaviour of individual can be expressed as the feeling of person which gives them
pleasure to use the same kind of substance again and again. It becomes high when it starts
controlling the behaviour of person and influences the decision making and working capability
power of a person.
There are many types of addiction in which citizen of United Kingdom are indulged
deeply such as Gambling, drugs, alcohol, Nicotine, Gaming etc. these are described below with
their major reasons and the ways through which it can be overcome.
Gambling: It is an activity that affects the mental health of the individual which is
initiated from the winning habit. After every win, person try over and over again so that the same
feeling can be experienced by him. Gradually, it becomes habit and its really hard for addictive
person to stop (Eagly, 2013). This can be said that addiction of Gambling is related to
psychology of individual which gives supports to the bad habit and becomes a problematic
barriers for its own growth as well as countries growth.

same level of dose in regular manner. This addiction is started initially by own will of person. it
is influenced with the sociological behaviour of person which attracts them towards its usage. In
relation with culture of United Kingdom, citizen of this place believes in enjoying their life in the
present. Especially youngsters of UK are attracted towards individuals who are taking drugs.
Initially the beginners takes it for which becomes habit with regular usage of it (Sheehan,
2013).
Alcohol: Alcoholism is the addiction in which approximately 10.8 million of adults of
UK are indulged. Among this figure, around 7.5 million are not aware of its harmful side effects
(Alcoholism in the UK, 2018). Alcoholism is dangerous for its users as well as family members.
Some of the major affects of excessive drinking includes injury, accidents, broken relationship,
financial issues, criminal records etc. This is the kind of sociological and psychological both. As
initiation of this starts with the social meeting which attracts towards the its positive factor like
enjoyableness. It influences the interest individual to try it once further with regular usage of
same thing, it makes user addictive to it.
Nicotine: It is yellow coloured oily liquid that is most active component of tobacco plant.
Addiction of this is started from the constant and excessive usage of tobacco and cigarettes.
Mainly it damages functioning of nerves and muscle cells of skeletal (O'Connor, 2012). This
addiction generates with the psychology of user like if the thought of individual believes that it
does not affect health with the minimal usage of it. But, after certain doses person becomes
addictive of it which influences them to take it in high quantity that harmful for its health.
All the above mentioned types of addiction are considered as the main obstacles which is
not only affecting individual but also their families and surrounding. It can be said that these
addictive behaviour of individual is influenced with both psychological as well as sociological

Depression: It is the state in which person avoids to interact people, they tries to ignore
social get together, preferable these person used to take any of the addictive thing which
are described above in order to reduce to give relax their mind. With this regard, the
person becomes addictive of same thing as they are not able to discuss with their close
ones (Vansickel and Eissenberg, 2012). Depression increases with the psychology of
individual which says that only intoxication can give them relief.
Negligence of work: Excessive intoxication also results in negligence of work which
might in any form like alcohol, drug, nicotine etc. It can be said that addictive behaviour
of individual might result in avoidance of work. In this state, addicted person only want
to do those things which can be related to component that owns provides similar kind of
satisfaction (Owen and Kemp, 2013).
2. Reflection
Self reflection refers to own self on the basis of skills which are the used by the
individual in completing its task or study. During my study, I have evaluated that my deep
learning skills beneficial in completing my project effectively. As I am always trying to
understand actual meaning of the topics which are mentioned in my project. According to the
observation, I have realised that I own both type of skills strength and weakness. Both of them
helps as well as becomes obstacle for me which stops to accomplish the task in given time frame.
My strength as well as weaknesses are described as below:
Strength is considered as the factor which acts positively and contribute equally in
finishing the study effectively. My learning skills were helpful in the completing the project as I
am good in learning new things easily which is beneficial in understanding new thing topics
easily. Along with this, I am capable of understanding human behaviour effectively and can also
predict the what are their expectation from me. This helped in having good command over
psychology of person who were related to the person.
Weakness refers to obstacles and negative factors which distracts me from finishing of
the project. Lack of time management skill became barrier for me as I am not able to manage
allotted time for the study effectively. This impacts negatively on my schedule which is busy for
other activities too. Its very difficult for me to finish the work in left time. Apart from this, my
study was more dependent on secondary data which was a huge hurdle for me. Because I am not

finishing whole work in minimum time with more efficiency.

From the above mention report it has been concluded that addiction becomes one of the
common contemporary social issue across the world. It can be said that addictive behaviour of
individual is initiated from the both psychology as well as social surrounding of person.
