Introduction
Contemporary Management Capabilities is an essential tool for any manager. Not only do
these capabilities help in developing a better manager and a better workman, but they also
contribute to the overall personality and the longevity of the person as a professional. It is
essential for people to understand how these competencies and capabilities can be developed
to ensure that the person is able to make the best use out of them under all possible
circumstances (Percy, 2019). There are various soft skills which are needed and expected to be
there in a professional; communication, command over body language, time management,
teamwork and so much more. All of these skills make the work easy. Also, the presence of
these skills contributes to the proper team management as well. every employer looks for
these skills in a potential employee. What is essential here is the right attitude and the
willpower to do so. Conflict resolution is another essential activity which has to take care of a
lot of things in a team environment. Conflicts and difference of opinion are bound to happen
in a team and a good leader with all these necessary skills will be able to manage them like a
professional person.
This report will be a reflection on how I developed these skills in myself, after knowing their
importance and how I could cultivate them for not just my professional success, but to
enhance my personality in an overall manner. The report will focus on skills such as
leadership, team management, communication skills to name a few and how they have
impacted my life for good.
Leadership Skills and Team Management
There is a very minute difference between a leader and a manager. A manager is someone
who is only concerned with getting the work done. However, a leader is someone who is
concerned about the overall growth of the team, along with their contribution to the work and
success of the organization. A leader is someone who can drive the people together and can
ensure that all the problems that they face in this course will be solved as soon as possible. I
understood that the leader inside me would come out sooner or later (Lavinsky, 2013). As a
person, I am someone who looks for short term pain and long term gain. This is called a

vision. My focus has solely remained upon not just solving the problem, but creating
strategies for the future which will enable us to ensure that the problems are mitigated in
future to whatever extent possible and that the people work hard no matter what. I was the
group leader for an activity. Here, I was not only required to get the work done but to also
manage a diverse team where people are different from each other a lot and that they are
working with each other in cohesion and without much conflicts. Conflicts and difference of
opinion are bound to happen in a team, and the fact that I was able to manage these situations
without letting them out of control was my biggest achievements (Zimmer, 2019). This activity
also gave me an insight into how I could improve; the most important being that I should
know how to say no to people, and that I cannot keep everyone happy. As a leader, I am
supposed to do what's right and not what's liked by everyone. Hence, my experience of this
particular time will be long-lived and will serve as a base for all my future learning as well.
Ethics and Integrity
An ethical approach to work is the most essential quality of a successful person. While doing
job, there can be a various enticing situation where out of pressure we might have the option
to go for an easy and mostly, an unethical way out. Now, most of the time unethical
necessarily does not mean harming people, but it for sure is not right and had the potential of
creating some problem or other. However, it is situations of these kinds that test the integrity
and the character of a person. It is important to not get overwhelmed by the pressure, and
rather work hard and work smart to find out ways which harm no one, maintain our integrity
and are also ethical. As a student, there were many such instances where I knew that the
situation is going to test my character and integrity (Ventimiglio, 2015). In one such situation, I
was given the option of speaking about some other teacher by one of my professors in
exchange for grades. While I knew that the professor would definitely give me an upgrade, I
still did not feel right doing what the person had asked me too. Hence, I politely declined and
told him to never repeat this again.
An ethical approach is essential since in the job there will be many such opportunities which
will not only be essential for promotions but for other success as well. there will be people of
kinds and it is important to ensure that we do not leave our ethics for anyone and for any kind
of reward. These situations are a clear picture of the kind of professionals we will turn into

can do anything for personal gains.
As such, any employee who works against work ethics will be the damaging the reputation of
the company since stakeholders will be keen to ensure that all the organization employees are
in a position to uphold the work ethics
Communication Skills
Communication plays an essential role in managing people and organizations.
Communication is not just about speaking clearly about writing in a good manner,
communication is also inclusive of listening to the people properly and being a good decision
maker. Communication has varied aspects involved in it. As a leader, it is important to
understand how important properly communicating it. Proper communication saves time and
encourages working together as well. There is an incident where I was asked to send an email
to the people of the company I was working too. Now the email was about a holiday but few
of the departments were required to work (Smith, 2017). Now I drafted a simple email taking
the same, and what all department was to work. However, my manager did not bother to give
me complete information such as the timing and the reason. And because of this, the people
now started coming up to me for all the questions that they had and started asking me if I
could help them in any way. So basically, here, the communication went wrong in three
ways: manager communicated half the information to me, I passed it on, and the workers
instead of questioning the manager were talking to me.
From this, I understood how even one wrong information can create a lot of confusion and
can result in potential loss of resources and time. Hence, I have made it a point to always be
clear and direct while communicating and this is what I expect out of others as well.
Conclusion
Hence, from this reflection, I understood that to be a successful professional there are certain
soft skills which are extremely important. These skills enable the person to not be just a better
professional but also ensures how well these contemporary management skills can be helpful

for others. They are nothing but a reflection or a proof of our professionalism to others and
hence, shall always be maintained.
