INTRODUCTION
Tourism include the economic, cultural and social spectacles in which people travel from
various places to many destinations regionally or globally. People usually like to go beyond their
comfort zone, for travelling to any other destination for professional or recreational purpose. The
United Nations World Tourism Organisation was introduced as an attempt to understand role of
tourism(Amoamo, 2018). The organisation works collaboratively as promotion responsibilities,
sustainable tourism and universal accessibility in tourism. Tourism is one of the prime economic
activity in the globe. Because of technological trends tourism is continuously expanding
significantly. The advanced technology made this world a global village and the modern tourism
is safer now. The essay includes factors which affect tourism industry (Butcher, 2020). The
significant factors of tourism along with development of contemporary tourism. In last, negative
and positive impact of tourism industry on socio-cultural and environmental condition will be
explored.
MAIN BODY
Describe the development of contemporary tourism and discuss its positive and negative
economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts.
Contemporary tourism is an aspect which is highly misunderstood by an individual.
Many of the developed country adopt it and this will be considering as key economic
development drivers through both developed and emerging nations in the world. This is a
significant industry, although this is important for environmental and cultural change.
Contemporary tourism is dynamic and complex, especially when modern technology were
added. This is important to consider the aspects of production and consumption to understand
current tourism system. In recent time, tourism system geographically has emerged as important
issue in industry. This is used for determining flows of tourists from various regions of world.
This system is used for determination of interconnectedness between different regions tourist
spots. Recently, the industry calls for making of strategies on a basic level for encouraging
tourism to specified destination of the world(Capocchi, and, et. Al., 2020). Current tourism
system has changed from traditional tourism system, the modern one have new features. The
aspects categories modern tourism consists policies of tourism, with other innovation, mainly in
hospitality aspects of tourism. The customers need the contemporary issue which needs various

forms of past experience. Other issue consists of internet, experience economy, big data,
recognition and analytics, which revamped current tourism and have great future for promising
industry (Kim, and, et. Al., 2021).
The impact of tourism on economy is indisputable. Various countries in globe invest their
resources in tourism industry, in result this industry helps to increase GDP. The positive
repercussions are vast, government revenue, includes earning of foreign exchange and indirect
contributions. As the incredible benefits will be generated through the income from foreign
exchange. The host country receives income and funds which were generated are reinvested back
in the economy due to economic expansion (Nguyen, and, et. Al., 2019). Contrastingly, the use
of other revenue for offering essential services to citizens, such as development of health care
facilities, public education. The tourism raises revenues of government from the investment
which government makes. These income were gained from direct and indirect contributions. The
indirect contribution emit from goods and services which were given to tourists. The goods and
services basically are unrelated to tourism industry(Seraphin, and, et. Al., 2022). The activity of
tourism will criticise in many cases of environmental pollution issue, environmental degradation
and depletion of local resources. This effect as over utilisation of natural resources because of
pressure, especially the places which have scarcity of resources. Stress made to local land is
causing rendering of soil unsupportive for activities of agriculture, soil erosion, the activities
which are great economic driver. Destroying of endangered species animal is also degrading
economy as the significant resources which is directly connects to economic welfare. The
industry of tourism will make better living standard of locals and their demand for luxurious
goods will rise. Besides this, infrastructure which is linked as tourism becomes expensive and
unaffordable for local citizens and hurting the economy of host country(Slocum, and
Klitsounova, 2020).
The economic factor is one of the factor in which the economic or financial condition of a
state will be determined. The industry of tourism will contribute approx. 3.5% directly and
approx. 10% indirect in GDP at global level. Furthermore, the impact of tourism on condition of
the state will be divided in three categories, first is expenses made by the tourists, second is
spending done through the business and in last the capital which will be invested(Thacoor, van
den Bosch, and Akhavani, 2019). The direct contribution in an economy is to be done when an
tourist buy any good or any service such as beverage, food, entertainment and hotel facility, or

any other thing which have to be purchased through an tourist. With the increase in demand of
these goods, result of encouraging various individual for starting their own business. In indirect,
the contribution is going to be made when the government charges tax at the time of purchase of
an good takes place(Nimri, and, et. Al., 2021).
Two main positive effects of the tourism industry on the economy are that it creates
many job opportunities. Both the locals and the other people get the job opportunity as this
industry requires a lot of people. Increasing the employment opportunities for the local people
means increasing the income of the local people, and all this leads to an increase in the living
standards of the local people. The rising income standard of the locals implies a direct
contribution to the country’s economy. The second and important positive thing is that the
government takes care of the historical sites and monuments as it generates revenue for them.
Not only historical sites, but also natural biodiversity are preserved (Lundin, 2022). The
government will make reasonable efforts to keep the places safe and build the right
infrastructure. The contribution of the government and people to save these things will attract
more tourists and more income can be earned by engaging in these activities. The other negative
point is that the outsiders come and start doing the seasonal business impact in two ways, firstly
the employment opportunity for the locals is over. Second, the situation of a multiplier and drain
effect occurs as the revenues from the tourism industry end up outside the host country (Leong,
and, et. Al., 2020).
All environment related factors like wildlife tourism, biodiversity tourism, natural things
directly or indirectly affected by tourism are considered under it, as large number of tourists visit
natural places and throw plastic there will affect this. The positive impact of tourism on the
environment is that by creating a tourist spot in the county, it makes the government take care of
all resources and natural things. The government promotes the company, which uses various
sustainable development techniques to protect the environment. Even various sustainable
products and techniques are used by the government to protect the environment and make the
country a clean and green country. The government will take some important initiatives to
increase tourism through sustainable measures in the county (Kozak, 2019). While the negative
impact of tourism on the environment is an increase in pollution due to an increase in the number
of tourism in the host country. Pollution is increasing, either from the excessive consumption of
single-use plastics or from the smoke generated by vehicles. However, the negative impact of

this industry on the economy is that visiting the tourists causes a lot of environmental pollution
and excessive consumption of natural resources is caused by them. The other negative impact is
that there is over-consumption of natural resources due to the increase in tourism. The county is
losing its natural resources along with its natural beauty (Ekinci, 2019).
The interaction done between people of various culture and this provide a platform for learning
different people from different culture. The positive effect of socio-cultural is that the interaction
of tourists with local people will lead an understanding the culture. This helps in understanding
local culture in better way and both locals and tourists easily interacts with each other. From
knowing the culture, tourists become friendly with locals and look to visit again. The negative
impact of the socio-cultural situation is that initially the locals depend more and more on the
tourists to live their lively environment (Costa, 2019). During Covid-19 this kept all the locals
busy as they depended entirely on the visitors for their livelihood. The second important factor is
that more interaction between locals and tourism leads to an increase in crime(Cabras, and
Ellison, 2018). Criminal cases such as gambling and taking and supplying drugs appear to be on
the increase. The criminals start enlisting help from the local people for drug delivery and
thereby the local people develop the habit of taking drugs. Through this huge revenue will be
generated and this money is going to used in other criminal activities. This effect negative on
people of country and this will make an impact on tourism also.
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that the tourism industry contributes a large
part to the economy. The tourism industry is affected by certain factors; the trend factor was due
to Covid – 19. A large number of people have lost their jobs due to this pandemic. There are
certain external factors affecting the tourism industry, of which economic, sociocultural and
environmental factors have been discussed in the report. Finally, the positive and negative
aspects are discussed, such as – the opportunity to create jobs is the positive factor of the
economic impact. Better interaction between locals and tourists is the positive point of the socio-
cultural. In addition to improving the county’s sustainable development, there is also the plus
point of the environmental factor.
