Control S Data Center focuses on replacing individual desktops with ThinkPads to centralize data storage and reduce energy consumption, while Infosys emphasizes paper use reduction, automation of HR processes, energy audits, water recycling, and pollution control. Abstract
 This case study is based on the impact of green information technology on two IT
companies.
 The companies chosen here are Control S Data Center and Infosys.
 The purpose of the study is to find what these companies can do to change itself into a
green technology company.
 To sustain in the future and to be secure, the IT companies are increasingly getting
concerned.
 This is bringing in green IT practices which is good for the sustainability of the stakeholders.
 The literature review section gives background of the companies chosen, and discuss about
what green It is.
 Different green IT practices are given in details along with the way those can be adopted.
 Recycle and reuse are the ways to solve this problem.

Introduction
 Green IT is a complete new concept which is related to the business organization of 21st
century.
 To make the future of these IT companies secure, they need to think about its sustainability.
 In almost all the organizations of the world, where IT solutions are used, are giving
emphasis on making the whole process green.
 The pressure to adopt green technology comes from customers, social groups, competitors
and regulators.
 If these green practices are adopted , it will be increase the financial value and economic
performance of the company, by reducing expenses.
 This study is going to find the impact of green technology in two It companies- CtrlS and
Infosys.

Background of Control S Data Center
 It is established in the year 2007, in Hyderabad, India.
 It provides remote data storage facilities, processing of data and distribution of those data.
 It consists of a large groups of connected servers.
 It provides centralized information storage along with online information accessibility.
 It is capable of offering platform level facilities.
 Those facilities are- data storage, data centre setup, data backup facility, network to
security layers and hardware to operating system layer.

Background of Infosys
 Infosys offers IT, outsourcing services and business consulting to different organizations.
 International leader in providing next generation digital facilities and consulting.
 It had customers all around the world, and helps in transforming them digitally,
 Empowers artificial intelligence driven core, and give priority to digital transformation of its
customers.
 Organizations with agile digital at scale are able to improve performance and satisfy
customers thorough their services.
 Also provide cloud service and big data service.

IS Planning Literature Analysis
 Green IT means designing and developing information system for sustainable business procedure.
 It turns IT business to green e-business, by working on bringing down pollution, global warming,
increased cost of energy and limited accessibility of services.
 Green IT practice of the companies include, use of cooperative technologies, like video and
teleconferencing, organizational emission and carbon management, energy informatics systems.
 People and companies’ behaviors can be enhanced by improving environmental performance.
 RFID system enables companies to tag and monitor each unit of pollution, and then allocate
environmental expenses, to improve air and water quality.
 Green Cloud computing is inexpensive and highly scalable, saves power and operational expenses.

Response of Control S Data
Center
 Proposed changes include replacing individual desktop with ThinkPad which have only a processor and
cache memory, and data will be stored in centralized database in the office premises.
 The software changes include 64 bit MS Office 2010 preinstalled on the ThinkPad.
 Budget of this transformation is confidential.
 20 ground level associates, and a teem of managers will be in charge of product delivery and connection,
while 5 members team will do technical auditing.
 Expected time to complete the task is approximately 8 months.
 Due to centralized days base, anyone can access the data from any ThinkPad from any place, with no need
of storing any information.
 Upgradation of Security of internal and external sources rea under process.
 The whole process is one time investment, with long term benefit economically.
 Negotiation with Microsoft was a big challenge along with the budget and downtime of the process.
 All these steps will make the whole process of the company eco-friendly.

Response of Infosys
 Paper use reduction will be implemented, by printing on both sides of paper, recycling and using
them as notepads.
 The human resource department will have automation process like e-docket, to store documents.
 Managers of the organization lead the employees to meet the objective and EHS goals.
 The increased size which brought increased level of energy consumption, is controlled during
energy audits and energy efficient systems.
 Work environment is monitored regularly to check pollution level and chemical content.
 Water is used diligently, and waste of water is treated and recycled and used in landscape
maintenance.
 These energy efficient measures will help in bringing down energy consumption related cost.
 They will carry on awareness program to bring down the use of plastic and make the office premises
and the neighborhood eco-friendly and plastic free.

Comparison of Literature and
the Case Studies output
 The literature review section discussed about the use of green practices, which both the
companies had utilized.
 While Control S is thinking of using ThinkPad in place of desktops, to reduce energy
consumption , Infosys is thinking of recycling the papers.
 RFID will help in monitoring the pollution level, which is used by Infosys, to bring down
pollution and the chemical content in the air and water.
 The IT companies should focus more on the environmental issues.
 While Infosys is treating the sewage water to use in lands, Control s Is making data access
easier from any place, with reduction in hardware.

Discussion of the Solutions of
Control S Data Center
 Ctrl S Data Centre will bring environment friendly techniques, by replacing their desktops
with ThinkPad, which are preinstalled with MS office 10.
 However, convincing Microsoft for the same was difficult.
 It was a one time investment, which will bring eco friendly sustainability in the future for
along term.
 Though shortage of budget and time was a challenge, still it will be worth it.
 The user will be able to access the data, with just having the user ID and password, from
anywhere, and the need for storing data in personal computer will become unnecessary.
 it will reduce energy consumption.

Discussion of the Solutions of
Infosys
 Infosys had already started reducing the use if papers, by printing on both sides, recycling
used and using them as notepad etc.
 Human resource department is already equipped with e-docket to save documents online,
without use of paper.
 Energy audits help in monitoring consumption, while energy efficient systems helps in
bringing them down.
 Chemical content and pollution level is checked regularly to bring them down.
 Water is treated to use in landscape
 All these reduces energy consumption, pollution and total cost of operation.

Comparative Analysis
 Both the companies had started thinking about green technology
 Infosys is working in reducing paper waste, and e –docket is its proof.
 Control s is replacing desktops of employees with ThinkPad.
 Both the companies are reducing the use of energy by making the offices and its
neighborhoods ecofriendly.
 Green IT solutions are applied by both the companies, which will increase their sustainability
in the future.

Conclusion
 The report helps in understanding the need of green technology in the IT sector.
 Two companies working in India are taken for this study.
 They are Infosys and Control S.
 They have already implemented and are aiming to incorporate some green IT solution in
their operations.
 The managers and employees if both the companies were questioned, and the changes
which they are making are given in details.
