Group discussion about the analysis of the scenario of the Cosmos Online Newspaper:
Conductor: Good morning everybody. Today we are going to discuss about the scenario of the
Cosmos Online Newspaper. We have four members to conduct the discussion.
Member 1: We will be discussion about the Cosmos Newspaper. It is a Sydney based
newspaper agency. The organization is running well and is expanding. The company is in the
way of upgrading the information security policy, which can be considered as a wise decision as,
this news organization is dealing with the large amount of the information (Lin et al. 2016).
Apart from that, the employees in the company are increasing and managing of the human
resource needs the effective implementation of the advanced technology. Currently , the
company has both the current assets and the fixed assets. The current assets of the company
includes the revenues they are getting form the advertisements. Cosmos accepts nay types of
advertisements. The only concern which is made by the company is that those advertisements are
following the guidelines and the media codes and regulations of Australia. Another current asset
of the company is the large network of the organization which is spread almost all over the
world. The consumers of the inline newspaper can get the news feed and can watch news videos
from any part of the world. In case of the fixed assets, the most significant one for the company
is the consumer base. Almost 100,000 people access the news from the Cosmos and it is
expected that the number will increase to the 500,000 within 3 years. Another significant fixed
resource for the company is human resources. Apart from the CEO, Financial managers, HR
managers and the Publishing managers there are 20 supporting staffs. The other important assets
for the company is the information. This news paper organization has to handle a large amount
of exclusive information on everyday basis. The deployment of the advanced technology is

needed for the effective management and broadcast of those information. The information are
collected by both the permanent staffs and the freelancers.
Member 2: The discussion about the assets of the Cosmos company has been discussed.
However, the relevance of this discussion has not been evaluated. The Cosmos wants to provide
a reliable service to the permanent staffs and the other stakeholders like the advertisers and the
freelancers. Apart from that this organization wants to upgrade the information security. Cosmos
handles information which are exclusive and sometimes sensitive in nature (Shropshire and
Gowan 2017). This is a news organizations, so it is normal for the organization not to share the
collected news by the staffs of the organizations to the other news agencies. The organization
indentified the risks associated with the information security before the upgrading the
information security. Some of these possible security risks are- disclosure of the information to
the unauthorized person. This can be happened from the technical fault in the organization’s
internal system. The passwords can be used by the unauthorized person , which can cause the
leak of relevant information. The breakdown of the whole communication network can be
happened in case if the power cut happens (Ogiela 2015). Currently, the organization has no
backup option for storing of the information which is not a professional practice. These are the
risks associated with the information assets of the Cosmos and these risks can be mitigated with
upgrading the information security system.
Member 3: The risks associated with the information security has been discussed and
these risks indicate that there is a need for improvisation of the information security system in
this news paper organization (Liu, Fraustino and Jin 2015). The Cosmos is heavily dependent on
the freelancers for the collection of the exclusive news. The freelancers collects news form the
different parts of the world. Those news are transmitted to the Cosmos office at Sydney . In

some cases it has been seen that the news collected by the freelancers has been leaked in the
midway of the transmission. The organization has run many investigations for finding the
reasons of the leak of the information(Toregas, Hoffman and Heller 2016). In most cases it has
been seen that this malfunction is done for the poor communication between the Cosmos and the
freelancers (Subbaraj and Venkatraman 2015). In some cases the breaching of the information is
done by the internal staffs of the organization or the freelancers themselves. This kind of
sabotage is done for the extra money. To reduce this tendency of the employees and the
freelancers the Cosmos is becoming concerned about the wellbeing of the permanent staffs. This
will lead to the better human resource management. The better human resource management will
help the employees to be loyal to the terms and conditions of the company. Moreover, paying a
handsome amount to the freelancers will help the company y to get more exclusive news.
Member 4: The risks associated to the transmission of the news between the freelancers
and the Cosmos has been discussed and the reasons for this kind of information security breaches
have been identified. However, the dependency of these kind of risks on the regions of the
broadcasting has not been elaborated (Sipone and Vance 2014). The risks are also dependent on
the regions of the broadcasting. The freelancers may broadcast the news from the region which
is isolated from the mainland. In that case, the news may come to the Cosmos office lately.
During that long timeframe that specific news can be accessed by the other news organization.
In case, if the region is not far away from the mainland, the news can be reached to the Cosmos
headquarter easily. In this way, the region of the broadcasting of the freelancers is also affects
the information security of the Cosmos. However, these types of miscommunication can be
eliminated with the implementation of the advanced security techniques. The overall discussion
suggest that in order to improve the news service in the organization, Cosmos has to improve the

two areas- better management of the human resource and the implementation of the advanced
technology for the information security. The advancement of these two areas will help the
Cosmos to expand the news service business and the customer base will increase effectively as
the result of the good service.
