Summary of the article given
The article by Fiorito, elaborates over the issues of the cost of the poverty throughout the
globe. The article highlights the knowledge from the money manager of the author, Marc
Hamel who remarked regarding the economic nature of poverty in the conference (Fiorito
2013). The changing provision of the rate of welfares were up for discussion on which it was
stated that the context of poverty is expensive and has been costing the entire economy
money. The elaboration in the article furthermore illustrated the fact that poorer people in the
city tend to die earlier that the rich people of the city. Regarding the time frame, it was
discussed that the mortality rate of the two class of people differs around twenty one years.
Some of the conclusions that can be drawn from the article includes the cost of the poverty is
comparatively higher. This is because the poor people are often more sicker than the people
who are better off. This puts a pressure or a burden over the system of health care. With the
cost of health care system around $3billion per year, it can be concluded that there lies 20
percent chance of adult poverty in case of poverty in childhood. The article focuses on the
data of Ontario concluding that child poverty in Ontario lies anywhere among $4.6 billion
and 5.9 billion per year. The article furthermore concludes the fact that the poverty costs in

total for the residents of the Ontario has been staggering among $32 billion to $38 billion in
one year which is equivalent to percent of the provincial gross domestic product.
Some of the recommendations that can be illustrated from the above article includes the
design of the effective and practical policies for the raising of the standard of living that is
required for the formulation of the comprehensive strategy related to the social development
that will help in covering the needs of the poor. Furthermore some of the recommendations
can be the elaboration of the national strategy for the rural development for solving the
regional disparities and the prompt interventions through the development of the local
programs in the deprived areas. Besides these, recommendations like the formulation of the
housing policy, the improvement of standards of water and sewerage services in the deprived
regions and the activation of the role of the public sectors towards the formulation of the
health policies and the provision of the services and the control regarding the quality and the
cost related to the services of the health care services are essential for consideration.
Personal reflection
This section of the essay will explain my personal insight regarding the cost of poverty. This
article has changed my entire view regarding how poverty of an economy can cost expensive
for the health care systems of the economy. I furthermore understood the notion that people
living under the poverty line tends to get sicker often and for a longer period of time as
compared to the people who are actually not poor. This scenario resultantly puts the burden
or the pressure of the health care system of the economy. I furthermore realised from the
article and its explanation that individual surviving within the lowest quintile of the income
tends to use 50 percent more than the average person due to the factors such a the poor level
of nutrition, higher level of stress, the substandard and unstable housing and social

environment. As argued by the process of Bloom’s Taxonomy, I furthermore realised the
importance of the implementation of the process that includes the creation for the opportunity
for the poorer section of people in the society, the evaluation of the judgements and the
critique regarding the cost of the poverty within the system of the health care systems. The
process is followed by analysis of the scenario of the Ontario regarding the rate of poverty
and economical cost included within it. This process furthermore includes the understanding
and the remembering of the facts and the basic concepts regarding the recommendations
needed for the improvement of the cost to the economy due to poverty.
