INTRODUCTION
Leadership in any organization plays an important role, to guide their employees towards
the right direction and to carried out various operation for the company. Management implies the
managing job of organization (Ayman and Lauritsen, 2018). Costa cafe a UK based coffee house
company, headquarter is in Dunstable, England. The following report consists of relationship
between manager and leader in terms of their role and characteristics, consists of examples in
which leader's role and function of manager applied on situations, includes theories and models
on situational leadership, contingency theory and system leadership model.
MAIN BODY
Role and characteristics of leader and manager
Leader is responsible for maintaining and raising the morale of employee. Leader can
make good effective team who move forward in right direction to earn profit for the company.
Manager is responsible for managing the whole organization and gives a strategy to earn more
profit. Leader maintains the behaviour of employees and guides them to right direction, leader
plans and implies the function in organization to achieve the future goals. Leader of costa cafe
plans to maximize the profit, time to time gives motivation to their employees to serve better to
the customers. Management system of costa cafe manages the structure of cafe and gives
responsibility to the employee. They manage all the sales and profit made by the company. Costa
Cafe manager gives the opportunity to employee to attract the customers with their services.
Profit made by the cafe managed by the management team leader only guides and make a
effective team environment.
When it comes to conception of authority leader of costa cafe only handle one task, that
is gives motivation to the staff to work better. Leader boosts their morale to work better,
although team work is key to success, leader clears their path to achieve the goals. Whereas
manager possess most of the task, they have to make planning, strategy, manages the whole staff,
company's revenues etc. There is an effective harmony between the responsibility of leader and
manager authority, the harmony between these two maintain the organization. In costa cafe
services offered by the staff to the customers are enabled by the management system, they make
sure to maintain the coordination among their services (Cherunilam, 2021). Leader can predict

the future for the company and gives right vision to the company. Whereas manager has to wait
for the right time to implement the future plans.
Leader depicts the enthusiastic personality always remain positive and focussed, ensuring
that the employees keeps get motivated in right direction to work better for the organization.
Whereas manager gives the vision to employees and established a workaholic environment.
Leader requires leadership quality on the other hand manager requires both leadership and
managerial quality. Foresightedness quality of leader gives the right future prediction while
manager's effective quality is fast decision-making they carried out every task and activities
effectively. In costa cafe leader motivates them to manage time and depict the good and
supportive environment to increase their cafe company's sale. As their main product is coffee and
it is generally most famous among the people. For that purpose manager enables a fast planning
to attract the more customers towards their product. The budget and performance of costa cafe
company is the main mechanism for the controlling techniques held by the management system
of the company.
Approach of leader role and managerial function on different situation
Leader carried out important functions for the organization, and manager carried out
various operational function of the organization. In costa cafe leader's role and managerial
function used to maintain the operational activities for the company. Their roles and functions
are applied on various situational context-
Strong situation:
This situation describes that organization does not need to make changes when the
market is uniform, including recessions. For an example in market if there are no changes arise
in form of recession, inflation then there is no need to make any changes. Costa cafe company
influence the changes when there is need in market, they maintain their business stable in any
situation.

One of the most important task for the manager is to manage every situation whether it is
slow or fast (Ramesha, Shaik and Shamshuddin). For an example if there is rise in inflation rate
in market so chnages will made to emphasize the result. Leader's task is to guide and make their
employees comfortable about the shifting environment. Cafe costa adapt the steady changes of
the situation as it involves the maintenance of resources that manage the company's productivity
that does not affect the final result.
Rapid situation change:
Immediate situation arises in the market, company needs to make changes on urgent basis
in these type of situation the final decision is always taken by the manager who took the
responsibility of management. For an example in market according to the fluctuations rapid
changes are driven that influences the investor. Leader has to follow all the decision made by the
management and lead their team to achieve that goal. In costa cafe if there is a need of sudden
changes the decision is made by the management team and leader carried out that task in a way
to provide better result for the company.
Planning for new future goals:
Planning means setting the predetermined activities for any situation. It allows
organizations to plan their strategies and goals. Goals give special meaning to the work of any
organization. For the better future manager of costa cafe design a new goal to achieve it, leader
motivates their employees to proceed with plans to achieve the future goals.
Conflict between employees:
Employee plays an important role in every organization's success. They are responsible
for the revenues of the organization (Reid and Sanders, 2019). If there is any conflict between
the employees occur it gives bad impact on company's environment. For a costa cafe
organization if the company address this type of issue then manager and leader needs to
understand the root of problem first then discuss it with the employees who created that chaos.
Leader and manager gives equal time to each to speak up then provide their opinions on it to
resolve the problem and encourages them to work together with unity.

Resource organizing for any organization is very important, to utilize this resource in
productive manner. That reduces the wastage of resources (Luenendonk, 2019).Management
team allot the tasks to leader to proceed with the plan, If there is any problem occur in supply
chain manager deal to cop up with the market supplier, leader assign work to their employees if
there is any technical problem occur they solve it with the help of technical team.
Theories and models approach to depict the behaviour of manager and leader
Theories and model approaches are applied that are related to the various purpose of
organization. That impacts the leadership and managerial activities to work in appropriate
manner.
Contemporary theory of management:
This theory deals with the situation in which higher cost production is involved. In this
manager of the organization tries to reduce the cost, he came up with the strategies and plans to
reduce the cost, for that they need to negotiate with the supplier. Leader's work is to encourage
their employees to cooperate with the supplier in order to maintain the outcome for the
organization (Sandybayev, 2019). Management system of costa cafe applied the contemporary
theory of management in order to reduce the cost on raw material required for their main coffee
product.
Situational leadership theory:
Situational leadership theory is based on the skills and ability of the employees to carried
out their task in effective manner within a given time. Costa cafe uses situational leadership
theory to depict the behaviour of their employee towards their work. Manager and leader keeps
record of their employees, they depict their attitude towards their work (Wajdi, 2017). Leader
keep boosts their morale to complete their work effectively and to move towards the goal of their
organization.
System leadership:
This theory is applied by the leader to manage the employee's performance in any kind
of situation. It allows leader to influence their employees to carried out the job based on

employees are encouraged by the leader to perform well according to the situation demand.
Leader influenced them to create a healthy and supportive environment to carried out every task
easily, also it is beneficial for their business as employee works better, it will impact their

Contingency theory:
This theory describes the changing in strategies with different situational changes.
Organization uses this theory to mitigate the risks (Tyler, 2020). This theory is mainly involved
the role of leader in it as they enable their team to adapt any changes and allows them to cope up
with market conditions and environmental change. Theory is based on optimal post for the
contingent role. This theory in costa cafe impact the management to handles the decision-making
process in different situation and allows leader to motivate their employees in order to adapt the
situation and give their cooperation to cope up with situation changes, and encouraged them to
work effectively.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it is concluded that leadership and managerial role for any
organization played a crucial role. Leader carried out every task made by the manager both are
depended on each other. Every task has been carried out by both manager and leader effectively.
All the decision made in costa cafe proceed by their manager kept on tracking the product
standards, healthy and safety measure. Leader encouraged their team to work in any situation and
earned many benefits for the company.
