TITLE: To identify impacts of Covid-19 and lockdown on overall performance of London
Farringdon Hotel.
INTRODUCTION
Corona virus is an infectious disease that is caused by newly discovered virus known as corona
virus. It has affected people and companies in all physical, mental and financial manners.
Hospitality is one of the main industries among all that get affected the most by it (Perlman,
2020). For protecting themselves people are required to stay home and maintain social
distancing. If people go and visit hotels then they have more chances of getting affected by this
virus. So, for protecting people, hotels became bind to close hotels since March as per the
guidelines of the government and strict lockdown. This lockdown and fear of spread of corona
virus affected productivity and performance of employees and of hotel.
Background of the study
Covid-19 is a global climate change situation that has affected people and performance of
companied to the great extent. This present study is based on Farringdon hotel of London that
provides qualitative room and food services to guests. This study is going to show impacts of
covid-19 or climate change situation on performance of this hotel as how it affected its revenue,
sales, profit margin and goals as well. Further, with the help of literature review, it will discuss
some strategies and ways by which hotels can make themselves able to have positive impacts
and reducing all negative impacts that climate change and lockdown has on it such as following
rules of acts related to Covid-19, promoting work from home and others.
Aims and Objectives
Aim
To explore impacts that covid-19 and lockdown have on productivity and performance of
London Farringdon hotel
Objectives
ď‚· To discuss critical impacts of current situation Corona virus on performance on hospitality
sector.
ď‚· To explore some ways of reducing negative impacts of corona virus and regaining image in
the market.

Research questions
1. How covid-19 and climate change affected performance of hospitality sector?
2. Which strategies can help hotels in reducing negative impacts that Covid-19 has on it?
Scope of the study
Covid-19 or corona virus is a hot topic that has affected not only hotels and companies but also
to people, communities, students and all sectors of companies. So, this topic can help all people
in knowing all about this climate change situation along with ways by which they can protect
themselves against this. It can help at academic as well as commercial level to all.
Rationale or justification
To make hotels and companies able of reducing negative impacts and continuing their work is
one of the main reasons of selecting this topic (Lin and et.al., 2020). By identifying appropriate
ways and strategies, researcher can make companies able by which they can regain their image
and can have market position. Making people aware about all impacts that covid-19 have on
hotels and companies is other main reasons as by knowing impacts, they can support hotels in
accomplishing their goals.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Critical impacts of current situation Corona virus on performance on hospitality sector.
Corona virus and lockdown has affected hotels to the great extent. According to the Nicola and
et.al., (2020) due to lockdown and fear of spread of corona virus, people stopped visiting hotels
and hotels also shut down. It affects sales and revenue of hotel to the great extent. Due to
lockdown and lack of sales, hotels cut down several jobs and many people became unemployed.
It affected them financially and mentally. Sherif, (2020) said that corona virus affected
performance of hotels as some hotels started delivering food products to customers at their door
but due to lack of precautions and lack of safety, many customers affected from this virus and it
affected image of hotels to the great extent.
Fernandes, (2020) argued and said that corona virus and lockdown affected employees and
their families more than owner of hotels as due to this climate change situation, they lost their
jobs. Due to lack of money, they become bind to commit crimes like purse snatching, kidnapping
and others for money and fostering their families. It is also found that some hotels and
companies of hospitality sector became bankrupt because of 3 months of lockdown. It reduces
hotel bookings to the great extent and even after of lockdown, customers do not prefer to go
hotels until the end of this situation of corona virus.
Some ways and strategies of reducing negative impacts of corona virus and regaining image in
the market.
There are several ways by which hotels can running their business and can continue their
work. To some extent they can earn money and give employment opportunities to people. Kim
and Lee, (2020) said that, hotels require providing part time job to all of their employees rather
giving full time jobs to some employees and cutting down jobs for some employees. It will be
beneficial for all employees. Cairney, (2020) also said in this regards that by promoting work

from home with having full safety like sanitizing food raw materials, vegetables and others they
can deliver food products to customers by taking orders on phones only. There is no need to
bring all employees together at hotels and by making an effective use of work schedule they can
provide better services to customers.
On contrary side Kaushal and Srivastava, (2020) said that there are several technologies are
available in the market and by making use of technology in this situation, Farringdon hotel can
continue their business and can earn profit. Room robot is one of the best examples of
technology and by making use of room robots for providing services to customers and by
sanitizing robots, hotels can regain their image and can earn profit. Tang, Chin and Lee, (2020)
also said that hotels should focus on limiting guests bookings as rather allowing booking of 20
customers or guest they can accept only 5-6 bookings for maintaining social distancing. By
implementing all policies and using all safety tools like face shield, face masks, hand gloves,
proper sanitization, and hotels can reduce negative impacts and can earn money to some extent.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research type: Research type of research strategy refers an overall plan that helps researcher in
conducting and making study successful. It mainly refers a form in which data are being
gathered. When researcher gathers data in the form of words or non numerical then it is known
as qualitative and when data are being gathered in numerical form then it is known as
quantitative (Chang, Chang and Liao, 2020). For this research study researcher will gather non
numerical data or qualitative research because it helps them out in understanding human
behaviours.
Research philosophy: A belief about ways in which researcher have to collect, analyse and use
data. Interpretivism and positivism are main research philosophies. In interpretivism, scholar
believes that people have consciousness and react to external forces. Whereas, in positivism,
researcher believes that society shapes individuals and researcher cannot address some aspects
such as personal beliefs and experiences. Researcher has several options and views in
interpretivism and can also know that what people think and why people think like this. It helps

researcher in taking better decision and making research study successful. For this research study
and for knowing impacts of covid 19, researcher will use interpretivism research philosophy
because it is associated with qualitative research strategy.
Research approach: It refers a procedure in which researcher uses some steps of broad
assumptions of data collection, analysis and interpretation. Inductive and deductive are 2
research approaches. In inductive research approach, scholar generates brand new theory that can
help him out in taking decision and collecting data relevant to the topic (Jebb, Parrigon and Woo,
2017). Whereas, in deductive research approach, scholar develops an existing theory that has
already been generated and researcher only makes some changes for having accurate and
effective data. For this study, scholar will make use of inductive research approach because it s
suitable with interpretivism philosophy.
Data collection: Data collection is an important element as without collecting data of having
data researcher cannot take decision and accomplish goals. Primary and secondary are 2 types of
data collection. In primary data collection, researcher makes use of questionnaire, survey and
interview, researcher collects brand new data (Land Dr and Vander Linden, 2019). In secondary
data collection, researcher collects second hand data by making use of books and journals,
articles, literature review and others. For this research study, researcher will make use of both by
questionnaire and literature review for gathering primary and secondary data and taking better
decisions.
Data analysis: For making collected data accurate and effective, researcher analyse them by
making use of appropriate data analysis tools. If researcher uses qualitative research then it will
have to use qualitative data analysis tools and for quantitative or numerical data, they will have
to use quantitative data analysis tools. It is qualitative research so; researcher will make use of
thematic analysis tool as qualitative data analysis tool.
