Introduction
This report aims at using the design thinking methodology so that the various problems can be
solved by the solution-based approach. The focus will be made in this report regarding the
empathize, problem definition, ideate, prototype, and test. The experience of the design thinking
will be critically evaluated in the report along with demonstrating the design thinking tools and
their significance in solving the issues. For this project report, the issue that has been chosen is
related to security issues of people’s possession at CQU. Brainstorming is the design thinking
tool which is considered to be an effective tool for solving this problem and providing innovating
solutions.

Problem statement
CQ University is considered to be a very renowned university in Australia and students and staff
members feel proud to be the part of this university. The health, welfare, and safety of the staff
and students are taken very seriously at this university. But sometimes, there are security issues
regarding the possession of the people and due to this, it creates doubt in the mind of the people
about the security issues in the university (Liedtka, 2014). All the personal belongings of the
students and the different staff members are kept in the university lockers. The numbers of
lockers in the university are less in comparison to the students. It has been identified that there is
no secure space for the students to keep their personal belongings and even the lockers security is
in question as there are sometimes the cases of theft and loss due to which the people hesitate for
their possession (Luotola, et. al., 2017).
Future work by implementing the approach of design thinking
For creating security for the possession of people at CQ University, various techniques of design
thinking were used so that the innovative solutions for this problem could be reached. The design
thinking process was gone through in detail including the definition, ideation, empathy,
prototyping, and testing of the effectiveness of the tools towards this issue. By the prototype, the
fast feedback could have been achieved and the decision was also made regarding the other
alternative technique that could have been implemented in place of the brainstorming technique
(Eines & Vatne, 2018).
Design thinking tools’ critical evaluation
Brainstorming has been chosen in this project as the design thinking tool so that the solutions for
the problem of security issues concerning the people possession can be solved. It made us think
critically regarding this and every group member created something innovative solution for this.
Brainstorming makes us better at encountering the problem and we can think critically about
this. Through the process of brainstorming the creative solutions and ideas could be generated
and we were also able to make the free and intensive group discussion. The aired ideas can be

analyzed, discussed, or criticism of the same can also be made after the brainstorming sessions
get over and then the session of the evaluation starts. The various security experts were also
encouraged so that they could provide the solutions and their suggestions for the lockers’
security and safety so that no hesitation remains there in the minds of the CQ university staff and
students about their possession and personal belongings. After the session for this technique, the
best possible idea is implemented so that the best results can be achieved (H. Muhammad, 2016).
But there are some of the disadvantages that we found during brainstorming that this process is
very time consuming, the contribution is not made by all the members and it not always provide
the best and effective solutions. It requires that all the people who are the part of this technique
can provide the awesome and effective ideas so that the best idea can be analyzed and
implemented and the creative solution can be provided for the defined problems and issues
(Author, 2015).
Empathize
This stage is considered as the central process of design thinking. We highlighted at listening to
the requirements of the people at CQU regarding their issues with the possession and personal
belongings. We went through the empathy mapping at this stage and it was much systematic that
gave us the clear and defined learnings about this subject matter. We gathered information based
on the time constraint and developed the best possible understanding of the problems and needs
of the persons at CQU so that the security issues of the lockers and belongings can be underlined
(Gobble, 2014).
Define
After the collection and gathering of information, the information behind these issues was
analyzed and was synthesized so that the core problem of the people could be identified. This
allowed our group members to solve this problem and allowed us for resolving the issues by
establishing the functions, features and different other elements (Beltagui, 2018).

Idea generation
This is the third stage of design thinking, here new ideas are generated. After understanding the
needs and the problems of the people of CQU in the stage of empathy we analyzed and
synthesize the observations made at the design stage. Different tools of the design thinking such
as SCAMPER, Brainwrite, brainstorming, and worst possible idea are available with the help of
which the problem of the security issue of the possession at CQU can be solved. We all group
members mutually decided that brainstorming would be an effective technique for this problem.
The high amount of the creative ideas can be generated through this and the people who
participated in this session have different experience and knowledge by which the effective
solutions are provided (Cristiane, et. al., 2019).
Prototyping
This phase is also called the experiment phase and it aims at identifying the best solution for the
different problems that have been identified during the first three stages. The different innovative
and creative solutions were provided through the brainstorming. The analysis was made of the
impact those different ideas will have on the possession security in the campuses of CQU. The
comfortable environment for the meeting was set for the session of the brainstorming. The
problem was presented and clearly defined so that it could be solved and then the discussion was
made concerning it (Colombo, et. al., 2017).
Alternative perspective for design thinking
There are numerous stages in the design thinking and its various tool help at each stage so that
the process can become smooth and optimum solutions can be provided. In this report, the
brainstorming techniques were applied and it was found that this technique is most effective to
be applied for this possession security problem (Peña, et. al., 2012). But it was also found that
there were some of the challenges that were faced with this technique so due to this we think that
the alternative strategy that can be applied instead of this tool can be mind mapping as with the
help of this tool one content can be linked with the other content. After having the strong linking
of the project problems and issues the provision of the solution can be made strong (Zainol, et.
al., 2012).

Innovative solutions
Intelligent locker services should be provided in the CQU which are scalable, and are customized
electronic locker system which can give students and staff a space of their own. The manual key
lockers should be replaced with an automated self-service system of the locker. It should be
secured with the coding technology and more security can be provided to the possessions and
different belongings of the people as it is needed in the system of check inn of the electronic
lockers. These lockers will require very less maintenance and service system. For campus, it will
be ideal to have Flexi locker cube lock due to their heavy design of duty and low maintenance
requirements. It serves as the personal space of the staff and students in the university so that
their storage is decorated with different pictures and inspires them of anything (MacFadyen,
2014).

Conclusion
Therefore, we can conclude that the design thinking process is very iterative and it is used
frequently in today's era for the solutions of different problems. The challenges that are being
faced, the problem redefinition, and innovative solutions creation are possible through the tools
of this DT. This project report focuses on the gathering of data concerning the locker and
security issues in the CQU due to which the people possessions are not secured and they worried
about their security. Brainstorming includes the idea generation for solving the problems.
Usually, the groups of people are involved in this and various options and ideas are provided by
them among which the best possible solution is chosen. After analyzing the defined problem,
innovative solutions have been provided in this report.
