Picnic Point High School English: Creative Story of a Girl and Doll

This creative writing assignment presents a short story about a young girl named Elizabeth who experiences a difficult childhood marked by her parents' economic struggles and frequent arguments. She finds solace in a teddy bear, which she treats as a companion. Her parents' disapproval and the social isolation she faces lead her to retreat into a world of fantasy. After her father throws away her doll in a fit of anger, she embarks on a journey through the woods in search of it. During her search, she finds a puppy, which she brings home, and the puppy becomes her new companion. Through caring for the puppy, she gains the love of her parents, neighbors, and friends. The story draws inspiration from 'Alice in Wonderland' and explores themes of isolation, fantasy, love, and the importance of companionship. The story's setting is based on the genre of fantasy. The story is divided into two parts, the story itself and a reflection section.

Part 1 (Story)
The story is about a young girl who stays in her small house along with her parents. Her
parents suffer from economic problems, and the economic tension between them leads to a
numerous number of fights every day. Thus, the atmosphere in which she lived was very much
dark and gloomy. She used to feel very sad, and she preferred to stay alone all the time.
However, the little girl whose name is Elizabeth had a little teddy bear with whom she used to
talk and share her secrets. She used to hold her tight during her tough time. She thought her
teddy bear to be her companion, and she used to stay with her always. It is the fight between her
parents that always made her feel weak and lonely. It is during her time of loneliness that she
used to feel creative, and she used to talk with the doll. Her parents used to scold her for talking
with the doll as well. She used to feel that the doll is like her little sister. Her parents used to
think that she is psychology not well as she used to stay isolated and talk with an inhuman doll
day and night. Her neighbours used to pass comments on her, and she struggled a lot to mix with
her friends. Her friends avoided her because she was not economically rich and because she used
to speak with the doll. One day her parents fought a lot among each other regarding various
issues in front of her presence. In the argument, they even spoke about suffering for having a
child whom they thought to be mentally ill. Being very angry, her father snatched away the doll
from her and threw it away. This affected her mind very badly. In the absence of the doll, she
stopped eating and even communicating. She left going to school, and the only thing that she did
was just crying. She begged her parents to bring the doll back, but her parents did not hear her
request. Many days passed away with just her cries and loneliness. One night, she was crying
while the lights suddenly blew off. She thought she could see the doll in front of her eyes who
now have wings and cane even communicate. In her world of fantasy, the doll communicated

with her, wiped her tears and hugged her. Apart from this, in her world of fantasy, the doll told
her to follow her in her world where there is no anger, only love. However, the doll just
disappeared, and she started searching for her again. Not able to withstand the separation
anymore, the child slowly without making any sorts of noise, got out of her room, opened the
gate and went out of the house in search of the doll. As she was walking, she passed through the
woods. There were trees on both sides of the road. The trees, along with their branches, were
looking like ghosts with two hands who were trying to hold her and pull her back from her path
towards her journey. However, the dark night accompanied by the trees and sounds of the birds
which were rarely being seen because of the darkness was making the path scarier and even
darker. Additionally, the howling of the street dogs, along with the spark of their eyes, was
creating terror. The drizzles and the thunder added more to the terror. Despite not knowing about
the destination, she did not stop her search. She continued with it. She showed her bravery that
despite being described as the one who is suffering from some mental illness because she talks
with a girl, she is brave enough to handle her things and face difficult situations like that. After
walking for nearly a mile with tired legs and tears which are dried up, she sat for a while in order
to take some rest. It is during the time of the rest that she heard some sound of a puppy crying.
On seeing the puppy, she was surprised to see that the puppy was shivering in the cold, and she
had her doll beside it. She ran towards the puppy, took her doll and hugged the puppy. She
decided to take both the doll and the puppy back to her home. Though she could not go to the
imaginative world of love which she imagined that the doll was in, she was able to get the love
or create the world of love for the puppy by bringing the innocent puppy home. It is in search of
the non-living doll; she got her living companion who remained loyal towards her throughout her
life. However, by caring for her dog, she started to take up responsibilities and was being highly

appreciated by her parents, neighbours as well as by her friends. This helped her to get out of her
isolation and even mix and communicate with people. Her parents also started loving her, and
the wrong assumption that she was mentally ill also got removed away with time.
Part B (Reflection)
The impetus that lies in writing this story is being gained through the story of Alice in the
wonderland. In the story, Alice in the wonderland, Alice follows a rabbit to the magical
wonderland from that of her dreams where she is totally united with her friends. The friends here
makes her identify and understand her real destiny (Arlow, 2018). Similarly, in this story, the
little girl is in search of a doll through the woods where thinks she will be in the world of
happiness, but the puppy which was being found by her makes her realize that the love that also
lies in the true world and the responsibilities and capabilities that tend to lie within her.
The intended purpose of the story is to understand that if a person or an individual is
something from some form of issues, isolation can trouble him or her more (Faktorovich, 2014).
It is the responsibility of the friends, family and the neighbours to help him/her or the individual
to come out from the mental illness. In this case, the true loyal love of the dog helped the little
girl to come out of her illness and feel loved and responsible.
Though the story is about the journey of the little girl from being in isolation to that of the
being loved and responsible, the intended audience behind the story can be both the children as
well as of the adults (Glynos, 2014). Both the type of audience will be able to learn a lot from
the story in itself.
With the progress of the story, the plot changed. In the beginning, it was about the
association of the girl towards a child. However, with the progress of the plot, it was of the

journey of the girl towards the search of the doll or her own happiness and finally it was about
her getting the real happiness of her life which she got in the form of a doll.
The very setting of the story which is being described gives the idea of the genre of
fantasy that is being chosen. Magical moments are one of the elements of the genre. The girl sees
the doll speaking in her imaginative world is the perfect example of this (Hui, 2016). The
struggle is considered to be another element of the genre of fantasy (Jackson, 2013). In this
story, the family of the family suffers from economic issues, and she had to struggle a lot when
she travelled through the woods as well. Lighting is another significant element of the fantasy
genre (Lanska & Lanska, 2013). In the night when the doll appeared, the lights went off before
it (Mendlesohn, 2014). These are some of the aspects through which it can be said that the story
is based on the genre of fantasy.
The composer of Alice in the wonderland who is Danny Elfman influenced me to a
greater extent which helped me to write this story.
The theme of the story is the struggle of the child to get proper care and love amidst the
fights and problems of the adults.
