The Criminal Justice Association of Ontario
The Criminal Justice Association of Ontario (CJAO) promotes the vision of fair, kind and
progressive criminal justice system by way of cooperation with the government, people of the
province and with non-profit organizations (NPOs) (Schmalleger & Volk, 2013).
Affiliated to
The National Canadian Criminal Justice Association (CCJA) is in charge of CJAO,
which is a voluntary organization that works for improving the Canadian justice system ("CCJA
– Proudly Serving Canadians Since 1919", 2018).
Fund
It receives monetary help from various sources in the form of grants, fund, donations,
gifts, bequests and legacies that helps in the functioning of this organization. It also has a one-
time fee structure for membership.
Clientele
It welcomes members from all strata of the society, even though the person is not an
expert in the field of criminal justice services. Although, it traditionally attracts members from
the field of correctional service, be it governmental, institutional, community services or
voluntary sector. Presently it has around 200 members ranging from federal and provincial
government sector, police service, lawyers, private agencies, researchers and students ("Criminal
Justice Association of Ontario", 2018).

Vision
Its vision is to administer an organization in Ontario that gather support from the citizens,
the local government and various other non-profit groups who have interest to work for the
betterment of criminal justice system. At the same time, it informs and promotes knowledge
about criminal justice system among the common people, government, profit and non-profit
organizations. It supports and encourages the study of criminal justice issues and criminology.
To help organizations within or outside the jurisdiction of Ontario who have similar vision
("Criminal Justice Association of Ontario", 2018)
Operational philosophy
It envisages to facilitate a better working criminal justice system that is just,
compassionate and advancing at the same time with the help of the common people, the
government and the NPOs. This organization helps in disseminating news on current criminal
justice and social issues through professional networking, sponsorship and exchange of
knowledge ("Criminal Justice Association of Ontario", 2018).
Success achieved so far
It has a long history of working in the field of criminal justice system. It has organized
informal meetings and workshop of representative agencies to develop the criminal justice
system of Ontario and beyond. Additionally it has collaborated with various national committees
like policy review committee, Social Issues Committee, Public Awareness and Visibility
Committee.

Limitations
One of the major drawback faced by CJAO is poor cooperation from the public at large,
along with the uncertainty faced due to the change in ruling party that forms the government
(Bond, Murphy & Porter, 2015, p. 229-245)
