Overrepresentation of Minorities as Crime Victims
The overrepresentation of the minorities in the criminal justice system is a very serious
problem. The relation between race and crime has been present in America since long time.
According to various researches it has been found that individuals of the minority races are
mostly represented as offenders in comparison to the whites (Leiber & Peck, 2015). Racial
discrimination present in the criminal justice system can be seen as one of the most prominent
reasons for the overrepresentation of the minorities to become crime victims. It can be seen by
the data collected by the Bureau of Justice Statistics that multiple factors contribute to the racial
minorities to become crime victims (Gabbidon & Greene, 2018). One of those factors is the
unbalanced portrayal of crimes of violent nature by linking them to the racial minorities. Because
of these kinds of portrayals of the misrepresentative facts about the minorities by the media most
Americans are of the opinion that the Blacks mostly contribute to the crimes that are violent in
nature (Dukes & Gaither, 2017).
