Registered nurses need to follow certain protocols when they are dealing with patients in
a medical setting because any type of discrepancy can cause harm to the patient and obstruct
patient safety. This video shows a nurse giving intravenous administration with an infusion bag
to a patient, which will be critiqued.
Firstly, the nurse was efficient about hand hygiene and she was constantly using a
sanitizer after every step. Not following cleanliness is the root cause of infection in medical
settings and that eventually leads to harming of patient’s wellbeing.
1. The first mistake done by the nurse is that she did not explain the procedure of IV
administration to the patient when she went to introduce herself. Also, she did not obtain
the consent of the patient to carry on with this procedure. This is not a favorable situation
because the right to autonomy of a patient is extremely important in a healthcare
organization (Alfano 2015).
2. The second mistake was that she did not clean the injection port of the IV bag with a
cotton swab, which is a necessary protocol during intravenous therapy. Cleaning the
injection port eliminates the chances of cross contamination and enhances patient safety.
Using an unsterilized or unhygienic injection port could increase the chances of infection
as the injection will be inserted in his veins (Hachey et al. 2018).
3. Thirdly, during the time of disposal the nurse dumped all the equipment in the same bin
without segregating the type of waste. The needles and syringes should be disposed in
separate bins and the pharmacological or chemical waste has to be disposed in a different
dustbin. This is important because the medical equipment has to be disposed through
different methods so that handling risk is reduced and there is an effective biomedical
waste management (Liao and Ho 2014).
