Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment is a critical evaluation of a journal article focused on adolescent screen time and parental rules, based on a research study conducted in three American cities. The student analyzes the main argument, which emphasizes the importance of parental monitoring and control over adolescents' screen time behaviors. The evaluation assesses the balance of the argument, the validity of the claims made by the authors, and the methodology used, including data collection methods like questionnaires and the limitations of the study such as a small sample size and reliance on self-reported information. The assignment also suggests ways to address these limitations in future research, such as expanding the geographical scope and improving participation rates. The student provides a structured analysis of the article, addressing the research design, statistical tests and the suitability of the method used to answer the research questions. The study's limitations are highlighted, alongside recommendations for future research to enhance the generalizability of findings.

MANAGEMENT
1. Main argument of the author
The main argument made by the author is that screen time behaviours and screen time
rules need to be monitored and developed by the adults. The argument is balanced mainly
because parents have the right to monitor the activities undertaken by the adolescents. The
monitoring is done based on the parental control system undertaken so that the adolescents
can be monitored. An example can be provided in the case of Miami in which over 87% of
the parents control the TV content views of the adolescents (Beyens & Beullens, 2017).
2. Claims made by the author
The claims made by the author are that factors related to TV viewing need to be
identified so that parental rules can be enforced based on the factors. The aim is to understand
the rules set by the parents and the monitoring that is done based TV related as well as on
screen time using other devices by the adolescents.
3. Methodology used
The methodology used is the primary collection of data from parents and adolescents
from three cities across America. The cities include Cincinnati, Boston and Chicago. The
participants were recruited via mail, phone and in-person. A questionnaire was formed and
distributed that consisted of 11 items with separate query of the time spent by the adolescents.
The measurement was made based on the measurement policy developed by Robinson and
colleagues that was also used in previous studies.
4. Limitation of the study
The limitation of the study it is focused on only three cities from three different states
in the United States. This can be considered as a very small percentage given the fact that the

country is vast. At the same time, another limitation to the included that the study
participation rate was 50% and the reliance need to be on self-reported information.
5. Ways to address the limitations in future
The ways to address the limitation in the future is to ensure that people from every
state is made to participate so that an overall general content of the mentality of the parents
and the adolescents of the country can be understood.
