INTRODUCTION
This report is based on the article 4 “ethnographic study of strategies to support discussions
with family member on end of life care for people with advance dementia in nursing homes” the
reason for choosing is that it is one of the biggest issues which is faced by the patient in current
scenario. Critiquing a research done in past is very necessary because it help the research and the
learner in understanding the alternatives of the research which has been conducted as it is not
necessary that the research which has been conducted is the best available. Critiquing a research
require a variety of the function and one of the most important function is to select the critiquing
tool. Research will be conducted on the basis of the Caldell et al (2005).
All the critique which has been find out is supported by providing evidence to the critique which as
it will help all the reader in making a link between what has been find out. On the basis of same
reader also can take the help of the researcher resources to verify the information which has been
identified. The article is based on the aim to uncertain “ethnographic study of strategies to support
discussions with family member on end of life care for people with advance dementia in nursing
homes”. For the purpose of same literature and Research methodology are made by the researcher
and also has presented the result of the finding.
MAIN BODY
Reflect content title
Title which has been selected in the article is “an ethnographic study of strategies to support
discussions with family member on end of life care for people with advance dementia in nursing
homes”. Title of article should show the hypothesis of study this title is good enough to show the
hypothesis as it defines clearly that this study is conduct to help people with advance dilemma
(Vogel and Punton, 2018). At the same time, it has been interpreted that the title should not be
complex but this title of article is complex as it includes extra sentence to describe it i.e. Discussion
with family member.
Author creditable
After going through the article, it can be critic that the author was more than creditable as
author has tried to keep both part of discussion in front of the reader by showing benefit and barrier
both of everything which has explained by the author which shows the honesty of the author. At the
same time, it can also be measured that the number of the example which was provided by author
was not enough to link it with the reality (Lupia, 2018).
Abstract summarized key point
Abstract was good but not that clear to have an impact on the reader of the article as every
Document Page
abstract need to be started on the basis of the introduction which should clarify all the thing which is
covered in the article also. Author need to mention the significance of the article which would help
the reader in linking the information of article with the real life happening. At the same time the
element which are covered are covered very smartly by the author (Saal and et.al.,2017).
Rationale clear
Rationale of the article is good enough to explain the aim and objective of the article to the
reader of the article as it clearly identifies the same and also identify the issue on which the article
has been made. The rationale would have become more proficient if the rationale would have
explained the reason for conducting now in today's era. In the end it can be critic that it is more than
good rationale (Lancellotti and et.al., 2018).
Literature review clear and up to date
Literature review section of the study was good and up to date for the reader who is learning
the same. Researcher may have chosen the larger number of the author in the literature review to
provide the data and information regarding the study (Hart, 2018). In the end it can be critic that the
Literature review part was good enough to develop the study for the learner. This was done with the
help of the article “Doing a literature review: Releasing the research imagination.”
Aim of study clear
After going through the article, it can be critic that the Aim of study is clear enough to
explain the course of the research which has been conducted in the research this will eventually
which is very important part for any reach as all the sourcing and the research which are conducted
are conducted on the basis of same (Doody and Bailey, 2016). Aim of research is good because it
determines the issue as well also defines way through which information is gather. This study was
clear with the help of “Setting a research question, aim and objective” article.
Ethical issue considerable
All the ethics regarding the research or study was followed by the author as all the data
which was collected was kept with the high level of confidentiality. Also, author has taken the
permission of family before observing their performance (Martin, 2015).
Methodology identified and justified
This article clearly justifies the type of the methodology which has been used i.e. Qualitative
methodology and proper justification was also provided for the same. Author may also have the
option of justifying the same by comparing it with quantitative methodology but it was not done by
the author (Kumar, 2019).
Background identified
There is no clear description of the type of the research philosophy which have been chosen
by the author in the study. Using interpretivism research philosophy would have helped the research

in getting better result as this philosophy used to support the type of the research type selected that
is Qualitative research (Albertazzi, 2015).
Study design evident
Research design which have been chosen is evident as the selected research designed used to
describe the overall strategy that you choose to integrate the different components of the study in a
coherent and logical way, thereby, ensuring you will effectively address the research problem; it
constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data (Breslerand and
Stake, 2017)
Major concept
Major concept of the article was to gather the information from the family and the patient
and to summarized them to come on the final result of the research.
Context out line
After going through the article, it has been critiquing that the research has not able to outline
anything very proficiently (Lennon, Douglas, and Scott, 2019). This was understanding with the
help of “Responsive environments: An outline of a method for determining context sensitive
planning interventions to enhance health and wellbeing”.
Selection of participant describe
There is proper description of the number of the participant which has been taken into
consideration for the purpose of conducting the research and also it described that in how much
location this practice was taken place (Etikan, Alkassim and Abubakar, 2016). . Two NHS was
taken into consideration to see and observe the performance of the family by applying the
intervention in the same. Proper chart was presented to show the number of sample size which has
been selected by the organization.
Sampling method relevant
After going through the article, it can be critic that the author has chosen simple random
method as no prescribed family were taken into consideration. Random family were interviewed for
the purpose of gathering information (Yang,. And et.al., 2018). Non-probabilistic sampling would
be better option as it would have helped the researcher in understanding the issue of the patient
before on the basis of that only relevant family would have chosen.
Data collection
After going through the rep[ort it has been critics that author has used the correct mixture of
data collection tool in the research as primary data was collected by the author itself by observing
the respondent and also with the help of the interview to get the best out of the respondent at the
same time the secondary data was collected with the help of information gather from the different
family care and staff and carers of the NHS (Yeakley and Caballero, 2016). Author was also having
Document Page
the different option for conducting the research i.e. author may have taken help of the different
journal and book related to the topic of the study or research.
Method of analysis
Method of Analysing is not that clear. Author may have chosen any prescribed tool to
analyses the data in the organization. (Johnston, 2017) Thematic tool would be the best tool which
may have been chosen by the author for the purpose of analysing the data as it gets easy for the
reader to understand and would have become easier for the author to interoperate the data also in
the correct way as it presents the data in different graph and statistical form. The tool which is
chosen by the author is also good as it has consumed the less amount of time to complete the data
analysis process in the organization.
Finding presented
Finding of the Data analysis was presented in the form of the summary table which shows
that the clarity of from where the data has been collected and also describes the proper clarification
on type of information collected (Duffield, Stowe, and Shankar, 2017). Author may have used the
other presentation platform as it would have helped the researcher in presenting the result of the
research in better way as it would help the reader in understanding the result in better way and
would have forced the great impact on the reader as compare to the current selected tool. This was
understanding with the help of “Presentation and analysis of user interaction data”.
Result Transferable
The result which have been identified is transferable but selection of theme is the point at
which if researcher has given an extra sort of the effort then the result which has been find out will
be more relevant and transferable as compare to the current situation (Little, Deboeck and Wu,
2015). As this theme does not cover all the purpose of the research which has been conducted.
Conclusion
After going through the conclusion, it can be critic that the conclusion was good enough to give
a sort idea about what was the issue and what was done to solve it and how it has been solved and
the outcome which has been found. Hence this are the common element which is require in the
conclusion hence it has been analysed that conclusion was good (Schwartzman, 2017).
CONCLUSION
After going through the article and critiquing the same it has been finding out that the research
which was conducted was conducted with the proper uses of the information. But there was some
area which need to be seen by the researcher as in the critique it has been find out that the abstract
which was written was not written with proper information and there was also not full amount of
the element which is require in Abstract. After that the report highlights that the methodology which
Document Page
has chosen has provided good source of the result for the author as choosing Quantitative
methodology will get difficult for the author in giving the result of the research in the numeric way.
After that the report summarized that there are the methods which are chosen are good but there are
many methods which has not been chosen or described well in the article. In the end the report
summarized that conclusion part of the research was more than good to give an idea about the
article.
The article which has been chosen in the organization was good enough for the researcher as this
topic contain the current issue in the market so it has helped the researcher in getting the
information regarding the same very easily which has helped the researcher in conducting the
research in better way.
This critiquing also has helped me in developing the different skill as by the help of the same I was
able to understand the process which is required to critique the research. It has also helped me in
gaining the different information which I can used at the time of conducting other report in future.
