CROWD FUND RAISING EVENETS
Background of the Project
Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death among men. Tumor at the men's
prostate is the initiation of prostate cancer. Eeles et al. (2013), have mentioned that in most of the
cases there are no noticeable early symptoms of prostate cancer, which is believed to be the
major challenge in the treatment process. Hence, the disease cannot be detected at earlier stage,
where it is possible to provide good treatment.
As of the year 2016, there are nearly 47,000 cases of prostate cancer in male in the
United Kingdom. 11,286 deaths have been recorded in the year in all over UK. In spite of the
fact that there are 84% survival rate of prostate cancer, there are still chance of improvement
where, the cause of prostate cancer can be prevented by changing the pattern of lifestyle and also
avoiding the risks that are associated (Wedge et al. 2014).
Prostate cancer currently accounts for almost 13% of the total cancer cases in UK. More
than 54% of the prostate cancer cases in UK among male are recorded above the age of 70 years.
Men above the age of 90 years have the most chance of having suffered from prostate cancer.
The total number of prostate cancer cases and expected to rise at 12% rate per year. It is also
seen that the risk of prostate cancer in white males is much less compared to that of black males.
Surprisingly it has been also found that people living in the deprived areas have much less
chance of suffering from prostate cancer (Robinson et al. 2015). Every year approximately
417,000 cases of prostate cancer are recorded in all over Europe. UK is at 17th position in all
over Europe with cases relating to prostate cancer.
It is estimated that nearly 31 deaths are recorded in UK on daily basis for people
suffering from prostate cancer. It is the fourth most common cause of death among individuals in

UK. The mortality rate among UK males in prostate cancer is highest among the individual of
above 90 years age.
According to Bianchini et al. (2014), the risk of prostate cancer is entirely dependent
upon several factors including age and genetically factors. The preventable factors related to
prostate cancer has not been evaluated properly. There are some arguments among experts about
the food and lifestyle that can be modified in order to prevent the cause of prostate cancer.
In all across the world, there are more than 1.11 million cases of prostate cancer recorded each
year. This number is expected to rise significantly in the upcoming years, if there are no
preventable measures that are taken. This can be mainly achieved by improving the lifestyle and
raising the level of awareness among the people (Cooper et al. 2015).
The exact cause of the prostate cancer is yet not known. It is believed that the age related
factors are mainly responsible for the occurrence of the prostate cancer. It is also believed that in
most of the occasions the lifestyle of the people can have significant impact on the risks that are
associated with the occurrence of the prostate cancer. It has also been seen that people, who had
maintained higher level of sanitation in their lifestyle has lesser chance of having prostate cancer.
Individuals, who had suffered from urinary infectious diseases also has higher risks of catching
up with the disease.
The aim of this current project is to prepare a crowd funding event, which will help in the
awareness program related to prostate cancer among men. It is only with the help of the crowd
funding event that will help to raise the funds that are needed in the overall awareness program.
It is the important duty of the event managers to ensure that maximum number of people is
involved in the overall event that can raise the level of success and efficiency of the project. The

work-based action planning that is incorporated in the overall project that can help to deal with
the overall planning events. The project also needs to identify the problems that are related to
higher rate of occurrence of prostate cancer among men in UK. The success rate of this crowd
funding project will depend on the total funds that the organizer has been able to collect and the
total number of people, who have participated in the overall event.
Use of Tran disciplinary Models
According to Mollick (2014), the crowd funding provides the opportunity of the
innovation that are incorporated by the entrepreneurs. They are also able to directly communicate
with the public and are able to share the idea. The overall implementation of the crowd funding
can help to deal with the challenge that the event manager has to face for collection of the funds.
Kuppuswamy and Bayus (2015), argued that the crow funding has major disadvantage over other
traditional mode of financing due to the fact that the event organizers are not able to collect the
funds that are collected from the traditional ways from the large scale investors. It is important to
apply the economic theories that are believed to help in all major events.
In the given case however, the objective of raising fund is to develop the awareness
among the people of UK about the facts related to prostate cancer in men, which will help them
to prevent the occurrence of the disease. Hence, in this case, the crow funding event can be
helpful as it is dealing with the health related issues within the society. The relevant knowledge
that is needed in the overall process can also be gained with the help of this case. In this relevant
context, it is important to raise the level of awareness among the people, which will allow them
to change their lifestyles.

The model of the crow funding can help the event organizers to provide relevant
information related to the occurrence of prostate cancer in men.
The events relevant to the crowd funding are prepared with the help of the Kolb’s
learning cycle. This will allow the event organizers and event manages to gather the experience
needed for the purpose of designing all future relevant future events. There are four different
learning styles that can be applied in order to enhance the experience related to the crowd
funding events (Tomkins and Ulus 2016). In the first step, it is necessary to focus on the
experience that is needed to deal with organizing of the events. After that, it is essential to review
the overall experience that can help in the event organizer to make improvement upon their skills
as the event mangers. In the final step, the learners can apply the experience in all future events.
This planning can then be applied for gaining the further experience. Hence, the overall process
of the learning cycle is completed as a part of the reflection plan (Konak et al. 2014).
The Honey and Mumford model can also be used as a part of the learning model that is
mainly based on principles of the Kolb’s model. There are four different styles of learning that
can be incorporated in event. The learners are able to deal with the opportunity that can help
them to deal with the overall process of improving learning process (Salmani Nodoushan 2014).
Hence, it is possible for the learner of the events to improve upon the level of awareness. The
four processes of the learning styles include the following parameter:
Activist: These are the individuals, who learn with the help of the ability of the problem
solving skills and overcoming the situational challenges.
Theorist: These are the type of learners, who get most of the knowledge with the help of
the action model. The logical theory is also one of the important parts of learning

activities. These learners analyze the situation and the background information of a
situation that is needed as a part of the skills to overcome most of the important cases.
Pragmatist: These groups of learners take the extra bit of time to develop on the issues
and also inherit the knowledge. They also use experimental methods that are needed in
the overall process of learning.
Reflector: These groups of learners are able to inherit most of the skills with the help of
careful observation (Omar 2013).
Evaluation of the effectiveness of the Project phase:
As mentioned above prostate cancer has become one of the major leading reasons
contributing to the most of the deaths in the United Kingdom. This project will aim for creating
awareness for the student communities in the form of a charity event. The project has been
planned meticulously with giving keen emphasis to the intricate details of every step (Müller and
Turner 2010). The first phase of the project had been to plan the entire project paying attention to
creating awareness about the adverse effects of the disease and early detection signs and
symptoms of the disease. Along with that that the importance of the preventative measures will
also be explained to the target population in complete clarity to ensure that the most of the
student community of the chosen target population is aware of the dangers associated with the
prostate cancer and the understand the preventative measures in absolute clarity (Müller and

It has to be understood that the project event is essentially a crowd funding event; the

community was selected and each one of them was assessed for their past medical history and
their level of awareness on the subject of prostate cancer (Kinicki and Kreitner 2012). In order to
integrate the information effectively into the target audience chosen, interactive learning
resources had been necessary. As the campaigning event is a crowd funding event, a charity race
had been hosted to provide the event with the financial support it needed. The charity race had
been designed routed within the Greenwich community to facilitate easy management and over
all organization of the entire event. Branded cancer t-shirts and vests were also arranged for the
participants to wear during the race to ensure support and promotion for the awareness
campaign.
Social media has been effectively utilized for the fundraising race, and it included
WhatsApp group and Facebook trending invites to create a sensation about the event campaign.
The raised funding had been utilized for the awareness campaign and the rest had been donated
to a local charity. The awareness event incorporated primary as well as secondary data, to
construct informative resources for the target group (Jones 2014). The primary data had been
collected by the interviews from cancer research personnel to avail authentic information on the
prevention and early detection of the disease. The secondary data was also collected for the same
from authentic relatable and recent literature published previously, and the database that has been
used for the researching purposes include CINAHL, WebMD, PubMed, and google scholar. The
information has been incorporated into presentations, and leaflets which were circulated to the
target group at the end of the event.
The planning phase was meticulous and highly organized which helped in designing the
event in a highly articulated step by step manner and helped in completing the event successfully
(Crawford and Nahmias 2010). The next phase for the event had been recruiting, where the

planning and the effort by the entire team of the event management helped in completing the
event successfully without any mentionable challenges. The last phase for the project had been
the finishing phase where the target group was assessed about the understanding they gained
from the event and were presented with an informative handout including key points about
prostate cancer, its prevention and early signs and symptoms. All the four phases of the project
had been critically balanced and it helped in making effective use of the resources invested,
attains more management that is successful and completion of the event, and has enabled us to
overcome the barriers and hurdles that were encountered along the entire procedure of
completion of the project (de Jong 2017).
Discussion of the Skills Needed
There can be various internal or external variables that can jeopardize the successful
completion of the any planned event. In order to overcome these challenges a few leadership and
event management skills are required. As the event campaign was essentially a awareness and
prevention program for a public health priority, in my opinion, communication and presentation
skills are the most important for a event organizer. In the event we had to incorporate as much
information as we could regarding prostate cancer, starting from the early signs, adverse effects,
and preventative programs of the prostate cancer which required me to incorporate interpersonal
communication, description and presentation skills to ensure that my audience was able to
interpret the information circulated by my team effectively (De los Ríos-Carmenado, Rodríguez
and Sánchez 2015).

In a similar note, I must admit that the entire event project was possible because my team
helped me every step, in both planning the event and executing event as well. Hence, we
acquired and utilized effective cooperation, collaboration and team working skills in the tenure
of this entire assignment (Hwang and Ng 2013). Along with that, we effectively understood the
importance of respecting and incorporating the different views and ideas of all the team
members, which also helped the event project to be inclusive and highly relatable. In my own
opinion, one of the greatest requirements for completion of this event project had been acquiring
effective leadership skills that helped me manage and guide my team in the right direction and
also helped me resolve any internal issues that arose along the way (Jones 2014).
Along with that the need for conceptualizing and interpretative skills in the event project
had been paramount, in the literature research and constructing the learning resources for the
target group, the need for proper interpretative and critical analysis skills are pivotal as well
(Kinicki and Kreitner 2012). In course of the entire process of planning and executing the entire
event where there were a lot of miscommunication and misinterpretation situation, the problem
solving skills and applicative skills have been very beneficial. Lastly, as the event project
involved constructing digital and manual resources for the target group, digital skills and
numeracy skills also helped me compete the event project in time (Müller and Turner, 2010).
Analysis of the actions taken:
The event project incorporated a number of interconnected actions that together helped
the successful completion of the project. The very first action taken for this project had been
selecting the target group for the awareness program. Studies suggest that more than 40% of the
adult men have an alarming likelihood to developing prostate cancer within acquiring the 40s.

Along with that according to most of the research scientists, awareness and prior prevention
techniques is the only hope in reducing the alarmingly increasing rates of prostate cancer in
middle aged men (Waheed and Waheed, 2016). Hence we opted for the student population of the
Greenwich community to be the target audience for the awareness program, justified by the fact
that the young student population will be the best recipient for the awareness program and they
will be able to circulate the knowledge gained to their family and friends and will be able to
grasp the severity of the situation much earlier so that they can incorporate changes into their
lifestyle and avoid chances of developing the deadly disease (Whetten and Cameron 2014).
In order to aware the target group selected, the learning resources were to be developed
for which we opted both primary and secondary data, so that the target group will gain the
required knowledge from both the research studies published previously and the first hand
knowledge from the renowned oncologists and cancer researchers. We collected primary data
from the in-person and telephonic interviews with the help of preformed questionnaires to extract
authentic and relevant information, and for the secondary data we researched the most reliable
databases like CINAHL, WebMD, PubMed to ensure that the information provided to the target
group would flawless and absolutely reliable.
To conduct such an extensive investigation and research, an adequate funding has been a
prerequisite (Wu, Rivas and Chen 2017). In order to collect the appropriate funding for the event,
we opted crowd funding technique, as the event program was for awareness of a huge public
health priority, crowd funding helped us gather a lot of donations which we utilized rightfully in
the event resourcing and rest we donated to a local charity in the name of the event organized. In
order to conduct the funding program, we organized a charity race which will attract the
community students and youngsters to participate in the charity event and also incorporate

required knowledge from both the research studies published previously and the first hand
knowledge from the renowned oncologists and cancer researchers. We collected primary data
from the in-person and telephonic interviews with the help of preformed questionnaires to extract
authentic and relevant information, and for the secondary data we researched the most reliable
databases like CINAHL, WebMD, PubMed to ensure that the information provided to the target

To conduct such an extensive investigation and research, an adequate funding has been a
prerequisite (Wu, Rivas and Chen 2017). In order to collect the appropriate funding for the event,
we opted crowd funding technique, as the event program was for awareness of a huge public

cancer themed vests and t-shirts to spike up the enthusiasm. We utilized the social media like
Face book and WhatsApp to gather as much youth as we could to participate in the event and the
fundraising to ensure that the event attained as much spotlight as it could. The Facebook and
WhatsApp group invite helped us incorporate a large population into the event and required
negligible monetary resources (Wysocki 2011). Lastly we prepared informative leaflets and
handouts for the participants to take home with them that incorporated the key terms about the
prostate cancer and the Do’s and Dont’s for early detection and prevention of the disease and we
also conducted a quiz to gauge the efficacy of the awareness program at the very end of the event
which hinted at the success of our time and effort invested.
Learning from the Project from Portfolio evidence
As the event manager of the crowd fund raising, I have been able to develop upon the
skills that are needed as a part of the overall process of the events. The main aim of the event is
to raise the level of awareness among the public in regards to the prostate cancer. With the help
of relevant theory models, it is possible to develop upon steps that are involved in the event. The
target audience for this event includes the student community within UK. The main focus was
given on the students, who are in the medical background.
The communication process is the main important event that is used in this fundraising
program. I do strongly believe that the current age, the use of the digital platforms in the form of
social media is one of the effective ways that can help the event managers to reach out to a wide
range of audience. In our case, we have used Face book and WhatsApp groups in order to reach
out to the target audience and provide them with relevant information.
