This project undertakes the challenge of forecasting the values of the top three cryptocurrencies – Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple – as of the end of October 2019, as requested by the professor. The student employed a dual approach. The first approach, accounting for 20% of the marks, involved independent calculations and data analysis, utilizing exponential smoothing techniques via the STATA statistical package to forecast future market capitalization based on historical data. The second approach, also accounting for 20% of the marks, incorporated secondary forecasts and expert opinions from various sources. The project included detailed analyses of historical trends, with figures depicting the price and market cap fluctuations of each cryptocurrency from their inception through 2018, culminating in individual exponential smoothing graphs for each cryptocurrency. The project concludes with a weighted average of both approaches to provide the final forecasts for each cryptocurrency. The project also discussed the factors influencing cryptocurrency prices and market capitalization, including supply dynamics and market sentiment.
