CUC107 - Reflecting on Religion: Shaping Identity and Morality

This essay is a personal cultural reflection on the impact of religion on the author's identity and moral compass. Growing up in an environment where religious values were emphasized through actions rather than strict adherence to rituals, the author learned the importance of empathy, sympathy, and helping those in need. This upbringing shaped their belief system, focusing on morality and compassion, which became the foundation of their personal religion. The author emphasizes that their religion is rooted in these values, guiding their actions and shaping them into the person they are today. The essay concludes that true religion lies in these actions and beliefs, more than in any worldly definition of being religious.

Cultural Reflection- Cultural Aspect: Religion
Religion has been a significant part of my life and personality since childhood. It is not
like I go to church or give sermons on weekends. My parents fed the poor, gave charity, helped
friends and relatives in need and they made sure that I realize that it is an important part of our
lives. Well, most people in our country follow the religion, but my parents taught me to live it
instead of blindly becoming a Christian. They felt that going to church alone is not what defines
a religion. He is not an extremist, but he believes in God and has faith in him (Cusack, 2018). As
I grew up, I realized that the little deeds he taught me, shaped me into the person I am today.
It helped me create a moral compass, it might not be perfect but works for me. If I see
someone in need, I try my best to help them because if I don’t I feel like I betrayed what my
parents taught. Religion is all about your beliefs, perceptions, morals, and values (Crowne,
2013). I found my religion in providing a blanket to a beggar who is cold and not in visiting
churches every Sunday, some people believe otherwise. It is all about the belief system. The
environment I was brought up in focus on morality and not on the worldly definition of being
‘religious’. My religion is being sympathetic and empathetic, that is what my culture molds me
into.
