1REFLECTION ON THE CULTURAL ARTEFACT ANALYSIS
Narrative Reflection
My Story:
When we were reading in the class about the cultural artefact, I was fascinated by the
fact that things as small as clothes, jewelry and our food habits reflect our cultural roots. But
what surprised me most was the material culture that has given rise to a new cultural affinity
and formation among people. I thought about my story and what I could write about and the
kind of narrative that will convey the type of community I have in me. I thought of the
different activities which were a part of my life, different people without whom I can no
longer imagine my life. The general idea for the narrative was to convey the experience
which I had when I visited an African-American vicinity which seemed a world apart to
where I lived. At the time I was writing my draft, I noticed that due my uncommon situation
which can be the place in life to view two very different culture along with my own has given
me the process of understanding of culture in a different dimension than most people think. I
had to segregate a particular incident of my life which had a positive impact for it is one of
the most important lessons I learnt from this incident is to take the positive experiences
ahead.
Successes:
When I started writing, I was sure about the subject of my narrative and the way I
would like to depict it to the reader. I wanted my writing to show the part of my life as I
remember it, vividly and distinct enough for me to close my eyes and live it again. I had
many stories with me which I could have used for this writing assignment, but I chose the one
which left a more profound impact on my life and its understanding. The reason why I
specifically chose this topic was that I knew I could write about it extensively and show how
it gave me the feeling of being a part of something bigger than myself. I wanted the readers to

understand that my version of community and togetherness is a lesson I learnt from the
friends who were not related to me by blood or even culture. They were shunned and thought
to be the ‘other’ and the inferior, but they taught me the meaning of togetherness. I wanted
the readers to understand the symbolic impact of the experience in my life and image of me
being one of them was the best way to depict that. Since the topic of the cultural artefact was
intriguing and interested me, I started writing my paper way ahead of schedule which gave
me the time to re-assess my approach and read it from the reader’s point of view and helped
me edit my paper several time.
Goal:
The aim which I had in mind when I sat down to write my draft was to pick an
incident which would be able to convey the source of the sense of community which I display
and communicate. During the class I noted that there were many of us in the class itself that
belonged to a vastly different cultures and the fact that all of us has a different perspective in
life with which we see thing, I made up my mind to choose one of the most straightforward
relationships of my life to show its impact. The editing process was a bit hectic for me as the
experience with Melvin and Douglas is so close to my heart that I had difficulty in deciding
which part of the experience will be able to convey my perspective better than others. This
made me edit the draft several times before I could make the final submission. This subject of
cultural artefact will remain with me for a long time same as my relationship with Melvin.
