CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF A PERSONAL TAPE
Introduction
Our society is a multicultural and multiethnic society with different people from different
language, religion and geographic background. Not only multicultural but also multiracial
background people reside in this society (Kohlbry, 2016). The changes in the societal structure
indicate the fact of the change in the structure of the minority groups and lead to become the
dominant ones. The multicultural aspects of the society refer to the development of the
professional aspects of the counsellors to deliver professional guidance. In order to understand
the cultural and other backgrounds of people the counsellor must be considering of the facts of
the society and listen to the clients and provide them with proper psychotherapy. The counsellor
should be competent to the multi cultural and the multiracial origin for the proper understanding
of the situation of the patients (Foronda et al., 2018). The following sector is comprising of my
client’s presenting issue, the similarities and dissimilarities between me and my client and finally
the reflection on what I have done and what can be changed in order to proceed with the
counselling process considering the client and the observer feedback on the process.
Presenting Issue
The client is young school girl in the second grade and from India opting in a Chinese
school. The situation she facing highlights the different language background is a factor of
discrimination among people and it creates the opportunity for some people to bully others
(Wang, & Shi, 2018). The fact of the bully happened to be so stressful for the client that she feels
isolated and affects her mental state. My client stated that as she is a person from India and
mother tongue is not English and her accent is different from others as well. She also states that

she does not have any friends in her school and they always seem to seek opportunities for
bullying her. This factor provides the insight for me to understand the issue and the cause of the
issue which is the language barrier between the client and her surrounding people (Zhu, Chan &
Chen, 2018). The only friend she has in the school also talks to her when they are alone and
among other friends her friend tend to bully her along with them and she can only be able to
share her issues with the Librarian. This factor also provides me about the knowledge of the
cultural incompetence of the school children and the incompetence of my client’s interpersonal
skills.
Diversity
The client is similar to my culture as she and I both are from Indian background and our
language along with accent is pretty much similar. Hence, the situation she is facing I can
understand in a very easy way. I also could understand her situation in the context of the bullying
and feeling lonely in the new situation. The factor of the communication barrier in context of the
cultural and the geographical barrier can be understood here (Dryden-Peterson, 2016). As a
counsellor I also found that there are some factors affecting the mental state of my client which
are can be demonstrated by the cultural incompetence and the cultural dynamics as well. The
language barrier is the primary factor which affected the situation of my client and also the racial
discrimination of the Chinese people with my client (Wang, Wang, Heppner & Chuang, 2017).
The isolation of herself from the others and could be able to state her condition with any other
elders also can be stated as the inability of my client to open up about her problems and thus she
needs to be treated with compassion. The client’s position can be understood by me as I can put

myself in her shoes and help her to find the solution for her problems in the diverse cultural and
racial community (Mierzwinski, 2018).
Reflection
In the counselling session I was focused on building a proper professional relation with the
client. In order to obtain my goal I was trying to listen to her with more attention and also
communicating with her about the importance of the session and trying to figure out her
understanding capabilities as well. In the whole counselling session I was constantly making eye
contacts to the client and make sure to understand her perspective of the counselling session. I
was in a relaxed posture to make her comfortable and help her open up about the situation. The
factor of cultural competence and cultural similarities helped us understanding each other
properly. I was compassionate to her and communicating with her constantly in order to let her
know that I am supporting her and trying to help her. However, I should be more careful as she
has a sensitive issue and should advise her to be more open towards others in order to blend in
the society. It will help her and also I need to focus on my speaking as I have fumbled sometimes
as well. I should also assess her situation more and advise her about her self confidence and self
esteem build up (Chen, Zhang, Zhang & Deater-Deckard, 2017). This way the counselling
process would be more effective for my client.
Conclusion
Based on the above discussion it can be concluded that cultural competence and the
language competency would be a critical factor for the adaptation to the society. The reflective
paper helped me in the knowledge development about the situation of the language barrier

problems and racial and regional racism issues in the migration to the foreign countries. Bullying
is also a factor that affects and impacts on the cultural competency of different people. I have
also gained knowledge how to provide proper support to my clients as a counsellor and assess
these kinds of critical issues. The practical knowledge helped me in the betterment in my
communication and listening skills along with the critical analysis skill of me. The factor of the
cultural competency is the key issue in the case of my client and the factor should be assessed
with the proper empowerment to people and I should focus on helping my client to address the
bullying of other students of her class.
