Engaging effectively with culturally diverse people
Week 1
Introduction The World of human beings is framed by
the language. The anthropology defines the
scientific, social studies of human beings.
There is no relation between the language
and the reality of the non-language
relationship. To describe the anthropology,
it is required to relate to the people, society,
and culture. In the year 1930, Edward Sapir
and his student Benjamin Lee Whorf
published the journal namely “Sapir-Whorf
hypothesis”, both are the renounce
anthropologist.
Application This hypothesis tells that the human
language produces the distinction between
the lives of the world to live by the different
groups of human beings (Eriksen, 2004).
Person – everybody seems to understand the
word very quickly that what is a person but
what it actually means is not seen by others
as there is another perception through the
view of a person to another person (Eriksen,
2004). The perspective depends on the
human and where from they come. The
conceptual differences sometimes seem to
be concerned to express the fact of the
variations in the different people with their
perception and conception. It has been seen
through the journal published by Mauss in
1930 about personhood, which defines the
variation of the people's conception and
shows the differences of the cross-culture.
To state the variation of the people's

conceptualism in the cross-culturalism, this
study has defined various instances with the
different inhabitants.
The Hindus in India, believe that the baby is
not the newborn, but the baby is considered
as re-birth. Hinduism and the culture believe
in the reincarnation of the person. They
believe in the ‘karma' and ‘dharma' of the
individual and relates the individual to the
cycle of birth and death, and the good
people with good karma and dharma again
take birth.
Discussion In the African villages, the people give
priority to their strong traditional religion.
The people of these religions are believed in
the freedom of an individual, but they are
seemed to be more centralized on the
ancestry and the ancestral spirits. The
individual in their community who dies later
on considered as the spiritual entity. In
Melanesia the conceptualization of the
person is common. According to the culture
of this religion, the person who stops to
breathe is not considered as the dead person
until the person has a relationship in society,
and the relationship never ends (King,
2015). Gender also deals with the concept of
the person, and it is difficult to accept the
person without gender. Culture – the term
culture is considered as the difficult one in
anthropology. From the journal of Critical
Review of Concepts and Definitions
overview the discipline related to the culture

definition is derived (Eriksen, 2004).
Conclusion There are 162 definitions identified by the
anthropologists, and they seem to make an
argument on that. The term culture seems to
use as the synonyms of society. The term at
the same time termed as a multicultural
society.
E.B Taylor provides the oldest definitions of
culture. From the journal "Culture" in 1871
the definition includes several
characteristics of human beings with the
knowledge, art, morals, beliefs, and custom
which the individual acquires in society.
Week 2:
Introduction Racism mainly conceives color blindness.
The color and complexion differences
white, black can affect the quality of health
care. The disparities in healthcare relate to
the physician and the attitude of the patient.
Black patients can receive comparatively
less quality of health care as the
consequences of the physician and patient
bias. The physicians are also participating in
racial bias; the physician has a low
confidence attitude, which is less friendly
(Penner & Dovidio, 2016).
Application The black patient encountered to white
physicians has the majority. There is a strict
prohibition of racism and condemnation for
racism in health care. The physicians make
an effort in controlling the feelings of racial
bias. The racism is rigid prejudice, and it

has a negative impact on the economic,
physical and mentality of the black people.
The racism causes the threat in the treatment
of the people according to their color to
have better quality care for the diseases.
Social work in Australia is related to the
"Whiteness" and how it affects the
perspective of the social guide the people of
social work with the native people. The
people of social work practice do not
consider the people with white, black colors
and do not indulge the racism. From the
journal, it is derived that the social worker
of Australia is mainly white, and it defines
the universality in the practice and
profession. The idea links to the people who
are white and the theory and analysis of
society, culture and person with the white
habitats. The principle of Whiteness theory
is the universality of Whiteness in the
society of Australia, which permits to mask
the advantages. The American sociologist
debates with the identification of the
dimension of central.
Discussion Whiteness can be taken as the analytical
concept, which is related to the points of the
role of racism to frame the relations (Penner
& Dovidio, 2016). The white is attached to
the regulatory power, which helps the
professionals. There is a problem in
Australian social work as there are social,
economic, distances. The less difficult
definition of society can be given, and it is

possible. The anthropologists who study
society seems to be small. The only problem
that has been faced by the anthropologist is
the local people who belong to the large part
of the community where they are dependent
on exterior trade and accepts the women or
priests from the outside.
Today, the concept of society faces
problems that define the development of
society in recent days. The many
anthropologists and social scientists the
different definitions of the society which
develops the current concept and defines the
two types of society one is big, and another
is small.
Conclusion Based on the journal written by Henry
Maine in 1861 in the "primitive society"
there are two society one is status societies
and the other is contract societies (Penner &
Dovidio, 2016). The status society consists
of the relationship of each person and relates
to their birth, family background and
position in the society and the contract
society in an agreement which is done
between individuals who do not relate to the
birth or position of an individual in the
society.
Week 3
Introduction The refugee studies in the migration of the
sociology have broken the mutual
engagement. The refugee status closes many

migrants and filters the people who are
trying to enter by crossing the borders. The
restrictive immigration law has been created
for the migrants and the refugees. The
member of the refugee camp are defective
and makes the flaw, and they deliberately
mislead (Walter, Taylor & Habibis, 2011).
Application The refugee members are surrounded by the
politics behind. There are several camps for
the refugees and given the terms according
to the different countries. In Kenya, the
refugee is termed as "refugee", and in
Jordan, they can be considered as the
"guest". The sociological definitions of the
refugee-related to the migrants and there is
less agency of the refugees.
The study of a person should go with the
changes in society, and most of the
anthropologists do it by establishing the
value in the difference between conflicts
and tensions through the different interests
of the groups. The conflicts come under the
relation of gender in the situation where the
young women are more sufficient than their
mothers economically, and so they demand
of their individual freedom. White is social
work in Australia. It focuses on social work
practice and education. There must be
practice in progress in the social work of
Australia so that the people and the issues
can be understood. The concept of Bourdieu
is also related to the whiteness which is
prevailing in the social, economic, cultural

and geographical context of the people
(Walter, Taylor & Habibis, 2011). There
also must be recognition of some of the
important assumptions so that the major
issues and their solutions can be explored.
Discussion The unacknowledged and the unchallenged
aspects of the society must be explored and
considered upon. It will lead to societal
transformation in a positive sense. The
social worker's area also asked to do
examination of their own role in the lives of
the white people and the privileges. One
must go beyond intellectual commitments.
Racism must not be practiced and the
underprivileged must not be oppressed on
the basis of any grounds. The issue of
racism is one of the major issues and thus it
should be resolved from both the personal
and the political perspectives. Failure in this
aspect will not be advantageous to society in
any respect.
The migration of the refugees is also
affected by the aspect of the Australian
concept of whiteness and so on. The
education scenario must be improvised so
that awareness about such issues is created
and the suitable solutions are given for the
same.
Conclusion The engagement with the clients is also
necessary so that their issues and the
complexities they are going through can be
understood and taken care of at the broader
level (Walter, Taylor & Habibis, 2011). The
Document Page
Engaging effectively with culturally diverse people
shifting of the focus is also done so that the
prevailing racial status can be known in the
country and amongst the people in the
society. Intellectual commitments can give
the expected results. Thus, it can be seen
that the migration in Australia is affected by
many factors like racism and the concept of
whiteness. Mutual engagement is necessary
while dealing with the situation so that the
issues can be resolved within time and with
many effects.
Week 4
Introduction To define the society, according to Maine,
Tonnies the distinction between small and
large must be created first. Other
anthropologists do not accept the severe
limitations that relate to the categorization.
In the case of culture, the concept of culture
sometimes opposes nature. The culture is
everything from which the people learn
religion, language.
Application The Australian Prime Minister Malcolm
Turnbull has stated the country as being
successfully a multicultural nation. In 1925
Australia's racial management was 98%
with the British, and there was no possibility
to change. The Immigration Restriction Act
has been formed by Australia, and the
legislative foundation had been created
(Jones, 2017). This act never conceives

words like "race" and "white". This act was
implemented by a heinous policy that is the
dictation writing to the migrants in a
European language.
In the year 1901-1958 near about 2000
people took the test, and no-racial
terminology had been considered as
understanding. The Migration act in 1958
was modified in 1966, which was
introduced by the conservative government
of Australia. According to the federation in
1901, Australian keeps the white and British
who were designed in the policy. The
overwhelming majority in the population of
the country leads the multiculturalism and
the effect of immigration. Australia is
considered as the world’s major successful
nation with multiculturalism (Jones, 2017).
It has also got support from the bipartisan
because of the monoculture in the system. It
is necessary to maintain the racial and
cultural homogeneity in the country by
obliging to the Australian policies.
Discussion The commercialization of the white
Australia ideology has also been done where
selling of the specific products and the
services has also been witnessed. There was
redesigning of the policies for keeping the
Australia white and British. There was the
use of the non-racial language for the
minimization of the global condemnation
(Jones, 2017). Most of the leaders in the
Australian regime have given explicit
Document Page
Engaging effectively with culturally diverse people
statements on the topic of superiority. He
also stated that there is no equality in the
country in terms of race. The policies that
were redesigned had also a major effect on
the commonwealth of the country.
The basic and the unified goal of the
policies were to attain and maintain a white
British national character and nature. The
legislative foundations were based on
various acts and policies. The hypocrisy of
the country was also exposed with the help
of these policies and the legislatures.
Conclusion The migrations were put to test like writing
in the European language for around fifty
words to examine their ability. It was in the
hands of the officers of excluding any
person they don’t want to pass the test or so.
The entire purpose of such actions was
clearly understood with the help of the
nonracial terminologies. It also had major
impact on the individuals living in the
country and a widespread belief of
superiority was also overpowering the
scenario. However, the migrants were
offered a similar path as the Europeans in
the country on the basis of the skills and the
talents.

politics. It is about calling for the abolition
of governmental institutions. Their major
