A NEW CULTURAL MAINSTREAM
The essay, “A new Cultural Mainstream”, addresses the very pertinent issues of cultural
dynamism that draws examples from the American culture. The author demonstrates the richness
that society gains by recognizing each culture as unique. Hsu’s views on keeping cultural
diversity on top of everything well resonate with Bill Clinton’s comments that immigrants
energize the cultural pattern of America (Hsu, 2017).
Although there are thoughts from some thinkers that immigrants should be integrated into the
cultures that they find themselves in, evidence has been shown that this approach could deny
society the rich cultural milieu that these cultures enable.
The African American culture, for example, has contributed greatly to pop music with world-
wide appeal and earns great revenue for the American people. It is also true that various forms of
art have been popularized by diverse cultural groups in America. This essay could be enriched by
citing excellence in sports; America has gained renown for excellence in athletics and
gymnastics- games mainly patronized by immigrants.
The liberty enjoyed through cultural diversity is often resisted through such extremist groups that
propagate the so-called white supremacy (Pulido, 2015). This essay could also have examined
how the role of such forces in America has contributed to either strengthen or weaken cultural

diversity. Efforts should be made to sensitize the natives that “foreign” cultures ultimately serve
to enrich the cultural heritage.
Although historical factors have played a great role in cultural inclusivity, forces of globalization
will play a great role in the migration of persons (Kraidy, 2017). This will lead to great cultural
diversity and the society at large must be prepared to accommodate persons of various cultural
orientations.
