The paper aims for determining the effectiveness of the cultural competency training in
the registered nurses in improving the culturally congruent practice in them. The paper will
discuss the culturally congruent practice firstly along with all the competencies faced by the
registered nurses from a cultural viewpoint. After that the effectiveness of the cultural
competency training in the registered nurses will be discussed.
The cultural congruent practices can be described as the evidence-based practices that
takes the different cultural views, opinions, beliefs and practices into consideration, when
providing patient care (Marion, et al., 2016). This particular consideration helps a registered
nurse to understand the condition of the patient better, when developing a care plan for him or
her. This practice also increases the satisfaction level in the patient, since the cultural background
is always a sensitive point for most of the populations in all around the world.
There are various cultural competencies faced by the registered nurses, which includes
showing proper respect and empathy when communication with the patients, understanding the
beliefs and views of a patient by taking their cultural background into consideration, using
proper tools and methods in the assessment and care plan, showing respect to the cultural beliefs
of the patient and various others (Marion, et al., 2016). All these practices can be considered as
the culturally congruent practice.
Various studies that were conducted previously identified that the cultural competency
training in the registered nurses to be an effective practice, especially when treating the minority
population (Govere & Govere, 2016). The practice increases patient satisfaction to a higher
degree upon receiving a culturally competent treatment care from the healthcare providers. A
study conducted on the first year medical students, who were subjected to a web-based cultural
competency training. The study used another group of first year medical student as control, who

were subjected to the lecture based cultural competency training. It was a competitive study,
which found both of those training methods to be effective as long as a cultural competency
training is provided by the healthcare professionals (Carpenter et al., 2015).
Another study upon establishment of the fact that training the healthcare staffs to develop
cultural competencies help with overcoming a few problems, such as the health hazards resulting
in the patients from the ethnic, racial and linguistic barrier between the patients and the
healthcare staffs. Among various interventions adapted for overcoming those barriers, the study
also made an attempt to evaluate the intervention of training the healthcare staffs in cultural
competency. It has been found that the intervention is supposed to help in increasing the patient
satisfaction, since all the barriers to effective communication will be crossed by the adaptation of
this strategy (Weech-Maldonado et al. 2018).
Hence it can be concluded that the culturally congruent practices are directly associated
with the cultural competency development in the registered nurses. The effectiveness of the
cultural competency training in the nurses and the healthcare staffs is based on the fact that it
helps in overcoming various barriers, which are associated with the cultural background and the
differences of the patients.
