The culture of the society stems from the behavior and the attitudes which are exhibited
by the individuals who make up that society. Since the inception of the human civilization, this
societal culture has been strewn with many kinds of values, some of which are positive while
others adversely impact the lives of a particular section of the people.
One of the important cultures which can be noticed in the present society is that of gender
discrimination. The issue of gender discrimination signifies that the male members of the society
consider their female counterparts to occupy a secondary status (Chandler, 2017). Furthermore,
this issue becomes concerning when it is seen through the lens of racism. Thus, according to
Crenshaw (2014), the women of color are hiding in plain sight and are often considered to be
invisible.
The de-mystification of the everyday life is essential for the understanding of the truths of
the society. In my own personal experience, being a woman of the twenty first century, I still
have to face a lot of challenges in having my voice heard. In contrast to my male counterpart, my
voice is not given much importance. For example, when I go to a restaurant, my male
counterpart is asked to pay the bill, in spite of me being an earning member of the society as
well.
Thus, it can be seen that the natural world order hides many of its patriarchal notions in
plain sight. Thus, they are not given enough respect or dignity which they deserve.

The issue of racism and gender discrimination are considered to be the two main
prevailing evils of the society even in the context of the twenty first century. In spite of the
attempts of the world leaders to establish a society where the individuals can live in a dignified
manner, the societal evils ensure that certain sections of the population are always treated in a
degraded manner (Chandler, 2017).
According to the words of Crenshaw (2014), intersectionality was developed in order to
understand how the issue of racism has found its place within the sphere of gender
discrimination. She has opined that the everyday life has developed to such an extent that the
women of the color are considered to be present in the society but no one acknowledges them.
This issue was faced by me. Being a woman, I have faced many challenges while trying
to make my voice heard in the society. Once, when I was in a presidential race for my college,
my opposition was a male member. When we had to address a rally, it was observed that the
onlookers paid more attention to him rather than they did to me. In a survey, it was revealed that
they had less faith in me because of my gender.
Thus, it can be seen that the issue of gender discrimination is present very much even in
the society. The onlookers had more faith in the male opposition because he exhibited a sense of
masculinity.
