Cultural Industry Thesis
The cultural industry thesis is proposed by Horkheimer and Adorno which mainly
contends the facts that the existence of the cultural industries depends upon the enforcing and
reinforcing capitalist beliefs has become a buzz word in the communities of the social science
researches.
In “Managing Cultural Transitions: The Impact of Creative Industries” published in
year 2005, the author, Jaka Primorac said that the cultural industry that aims towards
capitalism. The capitalism is the economic condition where the government plays little role. The
main role is played by the people and the companies present in the country. The country is
basically owned by the companies and the government has nothing to do in that case. The aim of
the cultural industry is to develop profit with the help of the people by making the cultural
products the basic need for the consumers.
As mentioned by the Horkheimer and Adorno, The culture industry distributes the
"goods" such that the individuals have no other choices rather than consuming them. With the
mass production, homogeneity of the content increases. Very less amount of diversity s further
obtained resulting in the less number of trivialities. Let us consider an example. TV serials. Ever
given a thought on the fact that the characters appearing on them have such beautiful mansions
and how beautiful they are. This is a way of capturing audiences. They are forced to think that
this is how the lifestyle of an individual should be. This is how the people are prompted to accept
such lifestyles which in turn leads to the economic benefits of the country. It is mentioned that,
in cultural industry theory has certain problems which has been identified and they are,
limitedness. The theory discusses mainly about the production of culture but it barely explains
the consumption of that theory in the real world.

Max Horkheime”r (1944) it is mentioned that cultural industry is present in the contemporary
world as well. As we all know that some of the major nations of the world are capitalist and
hence the theory of the cultural thesis is applicable to them all. From the places like Hollywood
to medium industries, follow this theory as they are also the one who seek the benefits of the
economy over creativity. In the modern day, films have become the part of our daily life.
Starting from watching over them in the theatres to just sitting at home and chilling over
NETFLIX, thereby increasing the sales of the particular movie in some ways or the others. With
a small amount of subscription, we are capable of watching them. With the advent of the social
media and other online platforms, this industry has increased with leaps and bounds. At present,
according to Adorno, the public are unwilling to criticize media as they are greatly dependent
upon them. They consider the cultural industry as a part of their lives and imagining their lives
without it is somewhat impossible for them in the present.
