A. Theories and models of curriculum development in the area of specialism
Curriculum development is defined as the multi – step process of creating and
improving a course which is taught at a school or university. There are certain models of
curriculum development which are being addressed as –
Official Curriculum Theory – Official curriculum is the curriculum which is published
in the prospectus and helps in addressing the individual courses including the number of
hours of teaching and awarding. The official curriculum includes the legal requirements for
the subjects English.

 There are certain models which are being addressed as how the curriculum development is being done and how
effectively the core subject or the area of specialism which is English.
 The curriculum development model helps in addressing the aspects as to how the models helps in addressing the
importance of English subject as taken area of specialism.

The Taba Model
 This is the best approach which helps in addressing the area
of specialism which is English. This approach is best
explained by Hilda Taba.
 This approach and model were explained in the book of
Hilda Taba in her book Curriculum Development.

The seven major steps which were undertaken in the
approach of Grass – Root Model is described as –
Diagnosis of Need
 The needs of the students in being diagnosed and this
helps in addressing the aspects as the curriculum is
planned on the basis of the needs which are being
addressed.
 For example – Most of the students are unable to think
critically while studying.
Formulation of Objectives
 The formulation of objectives is done so that the
objectives are established at large scale in the process of
making the curriculum development for the subject
English.

Selection of Learning Experience
 The content which is used in the subject English should engage
the students at large scale.
 There are certain instructional methods which helps in
addressing the aspects of how the English subject is being
framed at large scale.
Organization of Learning Activities
 There are certain learning activities which are to be taken into
consideration at large scale. The content must be organized and
sequenced.
 The teacher must keep in mind the students with whom the
activity will take place.
