IMPACT OF CYBERCRIME: CHALLENGES AND TACTICS
ABSTRACT
Cybercrime is the term for any illicit use of technology, including computers, networked
devices, and networks, for criminal behavior. It is a quickly evolving and complex
phenomena since the Internet now dominates all facets of human activity. Technological
innovation is the main driver for economic growth with there are certain to be further
negative effects. Cybercrime is an example of this. Since the internet is a free-flowing,
borderless, and international problem, cybercriminals are not confined by regional
boundaries. (Iqbal and Beigh, 2017). In this paper I will examine the impacts of cybercrime
on several aspects and combating cybercrime: challenges and tactics.
INTRODUCTION
Since the invention of the Internet, a broad range of cybercrime operations have terrorized
people everywhere. The term "cybercrime" describes a wide spectrum of unlawful activity,
including electronic hacking and denial of service assaults, where computers or computer
networks are used as a tool, a target, or a setting. Also, it is preferred to traditional criminal
activity with networks or computers to commit crime. Those with specialized knowledge or
computers carry out their predetermined plan. (Alazab et al., 2013). This premeditated crime
frequently targets specific people or groups to cause bodily or mental harm directly or
indirectly (Azad et al., 2017). Hong states that between 2015 and 2021, the average cost of
phishing assaults for American businesses climbed by almost four times, from $3.8 million to
$14.8 million (2022). There is no denying that all computer systems are susceptible, hence
laws are necessary to safeguard them from online criminality. Regrettably, the rules that
accommodate for new and ever-evolving technology are continually behind the criminals
who utilise these technologies.

IMPACT OF CYBERCRIME
The evil of crime in society
Why is crime the subject of such controversy? It may annoy you even though there is no such
thing as a society without crime, that crime is a common occurrence, and that crime is an
integral part of social life. (Rao et al., 2020). Nobody can deny that crime is a social
phenomenon; Crime is widespread and nothing new because it is one of the distinguishing
traits of all known civilizations, whether they were civilized or not, and it is one of the
primary motivations for all human behavior. More specifically, some people are victims of
crime. Anything of value could be lost by the victims of crime. Because they enable the
fulfillment of several desires, security, peace, wealth, and property are essential values (Rao
et al., 2020).
Impact on business
No report has precisely calculated the monetary loss brought on by cybercrime, however
some estimates place the cost of viruses and malware at billions of dollars annually. These
are the most negative impacts on cybercrime on business: financial repercussions, disruption
of service, stealing the company's or its clients' financial information and forced charges in
business practice. In 2017, the WannaCry attack, A form of ransomware, launched by North
Korea, has been unleashed that not only encrypts user content but also quickly spreads.
300,000 machines were infected worldwide by WannaCry, and customers were required to
spend one hundred dollars on data decryption and retirement (Ngo-lam., 2019).
Impact on political and environmental provision
Conceptually, crime is a dynamic and relative phenomenon influenced by the changes in the
sociopolitical and economic structure of the existing social order. the relative changes in the
sociopolitical and economic structure Therefore, it is not possible to have an all-
encompassing definition of "crime" that is applicable to all situations and societies at once.
Definitions are affected by the changes in the associated phenomena and the values they
brought. Economic crime is likewise at an all-time high. A water treatment facility in Florida
had its controls breached in February 2021, causing the sodium hydroxide levels to rise from
100 parts per million to 11,100. Operators may have suffered grave consequences if they had
not spotted and dealt with the change right away. People, plants, and animals that came into

contaminated water, might have been poisoned (How does cybersecurity impact
environmental services and infrastructure, 2022). The political structure and system also
affect the level of crime in each community because every controlling system for crime has a
great deal to do with the political system, which establishes norms, makes regulations, and
develops preventive measures. This indicates unequivocally that socioeconomic and political
elements are related to every definition of crime.
Impact on Healthcare
It can be damaging for a local community's capacity to maintain ordinary population care and
patient surges during cataclysmic events when an online assault on a medical facility impairs
its capacity for medication management. There are three areas in which one can classify the
effects of cyberattacks on healthcare facilities: Losses of Integrity: Because of concerns about
inadequate security, patients and professionals may become less confident in a healthcare
provider's ability to protect patient privacy. 2. Losses of availability: When assaults on data
and operations systems hit a facility, software flaws could result in care being disrupted. 3.
Confidentiality breaches: For victims of cybercrime, the theft or loss of patient information
can be one of the knock-on effects of the disclosure of personal data (Barnett et al., 2013).
Another factor to consider is the interaction between patient data and personal medical
devices. As it is, the healthcare delivery system in our country is constantly operating at or
near 100% capacity. (Smith, 2009)
COMBATING CYBERCRIME: CHALLENGES AND TACTICS
Cybercrime is a significant challenge for individuals, businesses, and governments
worldwide. The identification of pictures is one of the issues while looking into illicit web
content. While word-based searches can be easily automated, unlawful photographs can only
be looked up by matching them to database images of known suspects, and the image must be
unaltered. Identification would not have been possible if the perpetrator had merely added a
white mark over a portion of the image (International Telecommunication Union, 2012). The
law enforcement department finds it challenging to conduct investigations due to the quick
advancement of technology and the amount of Internet users. While a hacker can seriously

harm a system with just a laptop, an investigator needs enough software and gear to find the
offender.
In addition, many data transfer processes take a detour when the direct channel is blocked; as
a result, data may leave one country's borders before returning to the intended location.
Several service providers base their services in one nation on hardware from a different one.
As a result, investigating outside one's own country requires coordination between the law
enforcement agencies of all affected nations, which takes time. In addition, the integration of
ICT into daily life increases the attack surface for systems and services. Email, traffic service,
water supply, and electronic devices all rely on the efficient control and management of ICT.
Any breakdown in departmental communication can have a severe monetary impact for e-
commerce companies. The increase in users and technological devices is another clear
vulnerability to cybercrime. By 2010, there will be more than 2 billion Internet users
worldwide (International Telecommunication Union, 2012). Although rapid and economical
prevention is also possible with a little technical guidance and fundamental knowledge, many
attacks can be prevented. some fundamental measures to stop cybercrime include Increasing
awareness to public understanding of the risk and impact of cyber activity as well as the need
to implement basic security measures computers, laptops, iPads, tablets, phones, and other
mobile devices. The creation, maintaining, and upgrading of an online information resource
on how users of all levels of sophistication can set up and enhance their protection profiles in
cyberspace is essential. Making cybersecurity investment decisions within the framework of
risk management is crucial. This includes looking for the best value for money and setting up
and maintaining antivirus software. (Dix, 2017).
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, cybercrime refers to any illegal conduct using networks and computers. From
malicious email to serious physical harm to a computer, it may happen to anybody.
Cybercrime's negative effects are so severe that it is imperative to prevent it from happening
in the first place. By changing the regularity of the programs involved, it slows down the
supply and receipt of products and services. Yet, the government still has a big part to play,
most of the prevention must be done by private software companies and individuals able to
spot fraud. Consumer education initiatives will only benefit some potential victims. For
security to be effective, it must be simple to use. In some ways, although it is impossible to

say whether cybercrime will be a fundamental problem in ten years, but if the Internet is
going to keep developing, a solution must be found so that the reality of cybercrime will be
comparable to those of traditional crimes.
RECOMMENDATION
I support any initiatives aimed at preventing cybercrime as an active Internet user. To assist
their unlawful actions, criminals will use the Internet, computers, and other digital gadgets.
To stay up to date with this most recent approach to crime fighting, prosecutors and police
must have the tools, training, and resources necessary to confront cybercrime. Government
agencies should educate the public on the dangers and harm that cyberattacks may inflict,
especially to less experienced Internet users. To develop a worldwide information security
architecture that considers the technical, operational, organizational, economic, legal,
regulatory, and human dimensions.
