Lessons Regarding Cyber Security
Majority of the people in this world are using the applications of technological
progressions, however, they incorporates the least idea about the cyber security measures.
Hence, the related project is a capstone design assignment that are making use of the
“Vulnerable Web Server” sources of learning to educate the high school non-technical
students about the attacks and mitigation measures of cyber security. The ‘Vulnerable Web
Server” application incorporates the user-centred design approach to package the study
materials as well as the pre-built virtual machines that were creating by using the “Oracle
VirtualBox” to fit in the lesson plan.
The UCD approach comprises of four phases including
The context of the development
Identification of user’s requirements (Endsley, 2016)
Designing the solution and finally,
Evaluating the relevance of the solution with respect to context.
Regarding this design project, the objective to build the server package was to make the non-
technical users aware about the cyber security threats and the precautionary measures that can
be taken against them. Since, the users are non-technical; the lesson plan starts with
introduction of the concept and then moves on to the Linux Server and SQL injections such
that they can understand the topic quickly.
The solution comprises of VWS software and curriculum that are freely available in
the website and the users can take help of the pictures to set-up the wireless network in the
classroom. After building the knowledge base on cyber security, the users can participate in
practical exercises comprising of “cross-site scripting”, “SQL injection” and “remote file
inclusion” (Estes et al., 2016). Finally, the PowerPoint presentation explains the concept of a

hacker, their malicious activities and the ways to combat them with legal and ethical
measures. While evaluation the system as per the last stage of UCD, it is found that, VWS is
a helpful project for the nonprofessional to understand the negative aspects of cyber security
and handle the adverse situations by the guidance of the project.
