MANAGING PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS
Executive summary
The aim of the paper is to analyze the leadership style that I used to organize my group in the
dance performance in our annual concert. I played four roles of planning, organizing, controlling
and leadership while guiding my team members in a dance performance. Even though my
leadership was efficient, yet I faced problem in controlling and organizing my team mates.

MANAGING PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS
Incident
My leadership was judged in a scenario in which I acted like a leader for my team. It was
an annual concert in my university in which I took part in a dance competition (Chege, Wachira
and Mwenda 2015). Being a good dancer I had to lay the role of a leader and guide other
members in a team. There were five members in our dance group in which two of them were
non-dancers. This was a challenging task for me being a team leader. The dance was going to
take place in a contemporary form consisting of solo performance of each of the member in the
group. Everyone in the group was excited about the performance; however, they were also
nervous about the dance. Thus it was my responsibility to guide and train them in a correct way
being a contemporary dance specialist. However, while guiding I faced various challenges to
deal with the group together.
Critical Analysis of Incident
While teaching dance to the group I faced various challenge in managing things between
them. Thus while I was performing my leadership responsibilities I had to pass through four
steps such as planning, organizing, leadership and controlling (Antonakis, and Day 2017). Being
leader I had to complete all these steps carefully and bring my team to be one of the best dancing
groups in the concert.
The first step of my leadership started with planning in which I had to plan the songs to
use in the dance. While planning for the songs I arranged a meeting to take suggestions from
each of the member about the type of song they want to do. However, in the meeting the group
faced differences in thoughts which gave way to various problems (Fatoki 2014). At last we were

able to decide a song in which we will fall. The next step involved organizing the dresses, place
for practice, and timing for practice every day. In this step I carried out authoritative leadership
(Al-Safran, Brown and Wiseman 2014). I decided all the things for the performance. The next
step was leadership in which I was able to teach dance to my group members effectively.
However, I faced a lot of challenges while controlling the practice because the non dancer were
finding some of the steps very difficult and refusing to do them. Thus, I had to manage the steps
that will suit both the dancers and the non dancer members.
Management Issues and steps for Improvement
From my leadership role I realized that I faced challenges in organizing and controlling.
Thus, I realized that I should have followed a different leadership style for each of this process to
improve the effectiveness of my leadership role (Fatoki 2014). For organizing I should have
chosen a song by myself, as being a leader and trainer I know suitable songs better than them.
Moreover, I could have also improved on my controlling skills by making solo performance by
the dancers and the non dancers depending on their own capabilities.
