Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment showcases a student's exploration of data modeling and database design using spreadsheets, specifically within the context of Torrens University Australia. The student details their experience creating and manipulating spreadsheets to manage university data, including student, course, and staff information. The assignment covers the creation of four spreadsheet versions, demonstrating the addition, updating, and deletion of data, as well as the use of functions like VLOOKUP, sum, and pivot tables for data analysis. The student also provides a critique of another student's work, highlighting strengths in database object definitions and spreadsheet presentation, while also suggesting improvements in the depth of personal experience shared. The assignment emphasizes the ease and flexibility of spreadsheets compared to databases, highlighting their utility for data management and analysis, and concludes with a comprehensive bibliography of cited sources.

1DATA MODELLING AND DATA BASE DESIGN
Experience after completing the assignment
Using of spreadsheets have always been a strong tool used in the database. Database
includes tables that can be considered as one spreadsheet. After completing the spreadsheets. I
have learnt about how to handle data in the spreadsheets. The titles that are stated on the top are
the field names of the database table. In the given case study of Torrens University Australia
(TUA), there are different entities and those are mentioned in the spreadsheet. There are rows in
the spreadsheet and data of a person is entered in the spreadsheet as row and those shows the
rows of the spreadsheet (Jo et al., 2016). The user interface of the spreadsheet can be used for
representing the actual spreadsheet and only by viewing the data in the spreadsheet working
system can be followed. Spreadsheet helps to view the dataset in the database system and helps
to do things in a better way. Data can be browsed, sorted, entered as well as edited with the help
of spreadsheet.
I have designed spreadsheet of Torrens University Australia and have entered different
rows of data associated with the university. The university has different entities and all those are
mentioned in the spreadsheet. There are four version of spreadsheet that I have created for the
university (Borthick, Schneider & Viscelli, 2017). The spreadsheets that I have created can help
to analyze the data and help to sort list the items. But as per my view spreadsheets are not
appropriate to store data for long term. Spreadsheets are generally used to crunch numbers and
storage for single list of items. This helps in keeping the number of records, the statistical data
modeling and the computing data. There are range of functions that are applicable for
spreadsheets and those functions can help to manipulate, filter as well as sort data. Spreadsheets
are basically used for simple and basic calculations including automated functions and the

spreadsheet can be used by people who does not have experience about database and does not
have technical knowledge.
For the version 1 in the spreadsheet, I have entered columns and rows in the spreadsheet.
For entering the columns in the spreadsheet, I have entered the name of the tables that are
included in the database of the university. The tables include rows of 30 students who are
enrolled in the university and their associated staffs teaching the courses. The tables also
includes the details of the course and the timing for the course that are included in the university
and rows are included accordingly in the spreadsheet. Entering data in the spreadsheet is an easy
task and that would help to manage the data of the university efficiently (Morris, 2016). Entering
of data in the spreadsheet is entered one by one and without any technical knowledge the data of
the student can be entered in the spreadsheet. There are total of 12 columns that are inserted in
the spreadsheet to enter the details of the students and their related course and staffs associated
with the course and the students.
After the version 1 sheet been created in the excel spreadsheet, I have created second
version of the spreadsheet. I have copied all the data from the version 1 spreadsheet in the
version 2 sheet. In that sheet I have updated 2 records in the excel file and have added five
additional records in the file. This have helped me to learn about how to add data in an existing
spreadsheet. I have also learnt about how to update some information if necessary in the
spreadsheet (Nurdiantoro, Asnar & Widagdo, 2017). This has helped me to know more about
spreadsheet functions and how those can be applied in managing the database of the university.
Use of spreadsheet helps to include large amount of tabular data and also can use existing data
for making the calculations. Spreadsheet can be used simultaneously by many people at a same

time and all the cells in the spreadsheets are considered as single storage cell that helps to store
the data of an information system.
After completing the spreadsheet for the Torrens University Australia, I have learnt that
use of the sheets are more easy compared to databases and are more flexible and are not at all
expensive. Analyzing of data is easy in spreadsheet and with the help of excel, lot of features can
be accessed. Excels are able to displays charts and show the pivot tables, sorting of data as well
as filtering of data. In the third version of sheet that I have created I have learnt to add new
attributes in the table. Spreadsheet provides the access to add new attributes in the sheet even
after the sheet is being completed (Shigarov & Mikhailov, 2017). I have learnt to use pivot tables
in the spreadsheet and how pivot tables can help to manage the data by reorganizing and sorting
the data. Pivot table also helps to transform the columns in rows and vice versa and that helps to
manage the data more efficiently. I have leant about function such as VLOOKUP. With this
function, I have leant how to lookup for a data in the table and how data can be retrieved with the
use of VLOOKUP.
Excel or spreadsheet provide us with a list of functions that helps to manage the data
efficiently for an information system. The list of functions that I have learnt using the
spreadsheet are Sum function, text function, VLOOKUP function, average function, and
concatenate function. All function plays a different role in the spreadsheet. I have also created a
fourth sheet and named that as version 4. In that File I have deleted five attributes from the sheet
and have added five additional data records in the sheet. The data records consisted of details of
the students and their courses that they undertake in the university. After completing this
exercise, I was able to update, add and delete data efficiently from the spreadsheet. After

completing this assignment, I have leant many new things about spreadsheets and was able to
manage the data set of the university.
Critique of other student
After analyzing the summary report and the spreadsheet of Navneet Kaur, I would like to
state in the summary assessment report Navneet has clearly mentioned the definition of database
objects, and the attributes that he have taken for the assignment. He has provided proper
definition of the database object and the attributes explaining them with examples very nicely.
He have also explained the process of storing data and the processes of data management in data
storage system. He has explained the two different methods that is usually used for storing the
data. Navneet has also explained the disadvantages of using the file based data storage and on
that contrast, he has explained advantages of database system as points which states clarity of the
writing. Navneet has also provided proper citation in the assignment which shows that he has
provided effort in completing the assignment. In the spreadsheet, Navneet has presented the
attributes and rows very clearly. The way he has presented the attributes in the excel file is very
innovative and anyone without any technical knowledge can understand them. He has also
updated the rows of data and for better understanding he has colored them with different colors.
That is very clear to understand. He has also written his experience of completing the
assignment. But the experience that he has provided in the solution is very less.
As per the assignment brief, we were to provide our own experience about what we have
learnt after completing the assignment. Navneet has provided that but the information about own
experience is too less. He has mainly explained definition about database storage system and file
storage system. But that was not the requirement of the assignment. We are to write about what

5DATA MODELLING AND DATA BASE DESIGN
were have learnt after completing the spreadsheet reading the case study. As per my view,
Navneet was to write the experience he has gained by completing the assignment and making the
spreadsheet. The things he have learnt at the time of learning spreadsheet was to be written by
Navneet in the personal experience report. He has written all general instructions for the data
storage system and that does not specify that he has learnt those things while completing the
assignment.
Navneet has already mentioned the learning references that he has used for completing
the assignment. Then also I would like suggest some of the book of data storage that would be
helpful for him. He should have mentioned the books or the links from where he has learnt to
develop a spreadsheet. There are many functions that are supported by spreadsheet Navneet
should have included them in the assignment as well. I would also like to inform him that he to
include personal experience of what he has learnt in the assignment rather than explaining the
terms and definition of the contents for the assignments. He should have gathered learning
materials relayed to spreadsheet as that was the main part in the assignment and that would
helped him to write his personal experience more efficiently.
