AI Summary
This report details a network design for XYZ Company, addressing the allocation of IPv4 addresses across three locations: Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. The project's core objective is to assign unreserved public IPv4 addresses across various offices, necessitating a network design with four subnets and the utilization of routers and switches for seamless network connectivity. The design encompasses LAN configurations, including the extended star topology, IP addressing schemes, and the selection of hardware components such as Cisco routers (2811 and WRT300N) and switches (Catalyst 2950s). The report also provides a detailed analysis of the hardware requirements, including the functionalities of the Cisco 2811 service routers, the wireless capabilities of the Cisco WRT 300N, and the features of the Cisco Catalyst 2950s switch. The report concludes with a summary of the network design, emphasizing the importance of subnetting for optimizing IP address usage, maintaining network security, and ensuring effective data transfer. The paper utilized extended star topology due to its ease of setup and cost-effectiveness, offering more redundancy compared to other topologies. It also details the LAN design for the different subnets and the interconnecting devices like routers, switches, hubs, and access points.

DATA COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKS
1. Introduction
The paper mainly reflects on the company XYZ in Sydney that generally requires
allocation of IP Version 4 (IPv4) addresses in 3 different locations including Melbourne,
Adelaide as well as in one main office in Sydney. The main aim of the project to allocate
unreserved public 10v4 addresses in various offices. The network design of the office needs 4
subnets and in addition to this, one needs to utilize routers as well as switches for making
connection among the different networks. Moreover, all the workstation needs proper internet
access, intranet access as well as wireless network. The paper mainly provides design as well as
description of the LAN of all the subnets. Furthermore, a complete description of all the different
interconnecting devices including switches, routers, hubs which are required for building the
network are provided with proper justification. The paper also provides proper comprehensive
summary of the work that is done and proper recommendations.
2. Local area network
2.1 Network topology
The extended star topology is mainly selected for this network. According to
(Balabanov, Zankinski and Barova 2016), a hierarchical or extended star topology is a star
network with proper networking device that is mainly connected with the main network device.
This topology is mainly selected as they are considered as the most popular topologies for the
entire Ethernet networks. These types of network are mainly very much easy to make setup and
are inexpensive and thus help in providing much more redundancy than other types of
topologies. The extended star topology is mainly configured in order to make proper
connections with the different types of nodes on the entire central device. It is found that the

central connection generally helps in allowing the network to function effectively if any one of
the single nodes or the cable fails. This network is used as it is found to be very much suitable
for the centralized networks which are small. Additionally, this type of topology generally helps
in adding various types of sub-central devices which are properly connected with the entire
central device (Wadhwa, Deshpande and Priye 2016). This specific type of topology is found to
be quite advantageous for various large networks and it generally helps in providing proper
functionality for the entire organization such that the subnetting will be performed effectively
within the IP address allocation. This particular topology is considered suitable for large
networks that can span an entire building effectively.
2.2 LAN design connections
The LAN is mainly designed in such a way that the computer as well as the servers are
generally kept within different subnet such that the network security can be maintained
successfully. In addition to this, for each of the location, various routers can be used and same
type of topology is mainly used in each of the office for successfully reducing the complexity of
the entire particular network design.

DATA COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKS
The network is designed for the organization following the basic needs of the organization. Static
IP address is used for the configuration of the network device following the addressing plan.
Each of the site is assigned with a router for routing the data traffic from the department to the
destination address. Each of the site is installed with a wireless access point for connecting the
wireless network devices with the network.
2.3 IP addresses
The IP addressing scheme is developed by selecting the IP address of 12.97.0.0/22 and it
meets the requirement of XYZ Company for configuration of the network device following the
addressing plan. The development of the addressing plan helps in troubleshooting the network
configuration and management of the subnet for each of the department. It helps in maintaining
reachability between the different network segments and make easy for making future
modification on the network in future. Public IP address is used since they are routable globally
and used for providing service over the internet by connecting with an ISP. The IP addressing
plan is created following the number of hosts needed to be accommodated in each of the subnet

and allowing the company to add more number of hosts. The network proposal would help the
company to support the future growth of the organization and enable a streamline
communication between the HQ and the two other branches.

Melbourne and Adelaide has its own applications but there are several applications that need data
transfer those are inter-departmental. According to the network design, the hardware that are
used Cisco 2811 services router that is integrated at the three locations of the offices that is
Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (Castillo-Velazquez, Serrano-Martinez and Morales 2017).
The Cisco 2811 service routers have several features that are why it is used in the three offices.
The features of the service routers include IP telephony and features of voice support and
security features. The other features of Cisco 2811 integrated service routers include:
It has an upgraded module slot
It has high-speed interface card-slots of WAN and it used in order to maximize the density of
the system.
The performance of the system and the modular design upgrades the protection of 2811
investment
The other functionalities include switching support of layer 2 with the Ethernet that is power
over.
It can be used in order to perform digital and analog voice call
It can also be used for voice mail that is optional.
The encryption acceleration that is based on hardware is deployed into the motherboard of
the system
The Admission control of the network offers defense support of antivirus.
The Cisco 2811 integrated service routers are easily affordable and the price of the router is
about US$2,495.00
The other router that is used is Cisco WRT 300N. The wireless router is three devices in
of the boxes. It has access point that is wireless and it lets the users to connect to the network

without the use of cables and wires (Muniasamy, Ejlani and Anadhavalli 2019). A built in switch
is provided in the router that has the functionality of 4-port full duplex and it can be connected to
the devices of Ethernet. This wireless router uses latest technology of wireless networking. A
multiple-in-multiple-out technology is used in this wireless router and this technology multiplies
the rate of data effectively.
The hardware that is used in the network design is the Cisco catalyst 2950s. It is switch
that is used in the network design in order to connect to the routers (Aweya 2018). It is a line of
standalone and stackable switches and it offers very fast Ethernet. It provides two functionalities
and it permits various companies of different switches to choose a good combination for the edge
of network. The features of the Cisco catalyst WS-C2950S include 24 very fast sped of Ethernet
port and it also supports Virtual Land Area Network. The cost of this Cisco switch is US$949.99.
4. Conclusion
It can be concluded from the entire paper that proper development of subnet plan for the
organization XYZ is quite helpful in enhancing the usability of the IP addresses. It is found that
proper design of the Lan is developed after successfully analyzing various number of hosts
which are required for making connection as per the subnet. The utilization of application as well
as inter department-based data transfer generally required to be analyzed in order to successfully
develop the network. In addition to this, the required wireless access is generally maintained for
different users such that proper communication must be properly analyzed for the network
development. Moreover, the network topologies as well as protocols that are considered to be
best for network are generally aligned with the entire network for successfully developing the
network framework quite successfully. Proper estimation is generally made in order to analyze
the hardware which are required for the proper network development and for various types of

network cables which are generally needed for properly interconnecting various network devices
which are generally installed in various locations of the network. Furthermore, the paper utilizes
extended star topology as this type of topology are quite easy to make setup and are found to be
very much inexpensive and therefore it generally helps in providing much more redundancy in
comparison to other types of topologies. The paper also proper design as well as description of
the local area network of different subnets. In addition to this, proper description of all the
different interconnecting devices including switches, routers, hubs as well as access points and
wiring are generally utilized for successfully building the network effectively.
