Report
AI Summary
This report explores the history of database systems and discusses three significant developments. It also includes a data modelling component where an ERD (Entity-Relationship Diagram) is created using Crow’s Foot notation for a hypothetical spa company. The company, Hot Water (HW), orders spas from manufacturers and sells them to customers. The report covers the relationships between manufacturers, brands, and spas, and considers how these elements are managed within a relational database model. The research investigates the evolution of database systems, starting from manual record-keeping to the development of digital data storage, and the advancements in data relationships and structures, including the evolution of the three-tier data storage system and the user interface.

DATABASE SYSTEMS
Part A: Database research
The history of database has been very eventful. The researches related to data has been
started long before the inventions of computer systems as well. The word data originated in Latin
language datum. The concepts of storage and record keeping had been started way back in the
1960s. Earlier there were limited technologies that were used for the storage of the records. It all
started with manual record keeping which involved paper and pens. However, there was a
problem involving this. This used to be hectic task for the management of data. There used to be
a lot of fuss involving the loss of data and the data being stolen.
With the digitization in the 2003 the concept of digital data had come into being. The
concept of digital record keeping and database had suddenly evolved during this time. The recent
developments have further enhanced the concept and the management of the data that are being
stored are formulated.
In the year 2007 the relationship in between data was realized and the entities and the
attributes for each type of data was being developed. The relationships in between the entities are
being realized with the entity relationship diagrams. The data was further developed and three
tiers of data storage was formed. The internal data structures defined the relationships in between
the data. The users were however provided with only the logical view of the database. Hence, the
user would only be allowed to perform the DML queries and the not the DDL queries.
