Report
AI Summary
This report is a data analysis of student performance in the MIS171 Business Analytics course at Deakin University. It examines the average student scores across eight core units, revealing an overall pass rate with an average score of 74.89. The analysis includes observations on outliers, skewness, and standard deviation, providing insights into data distribution. The report compares the performance of male and female students in core unit 4 (business analytics), highlighting gender differences and the impact of attendance on grades. Correlations between attendance and core unit scores are analyzed, with the R^2 value indicating the suitability of a straight-line graph. The report concludes by summarizing the key findings, including the positive correlations observed between various factors and the implications for business analytics.

Subject: Report on the data analysis
Dear Claudia,
When looking at the 8 score core units, we
see that most students have passed as this can be
confirmed by the average student scores for 8 units
which is 74.89. We also observe that a female
student scored 100 in core unit 4 (business
analytics). Our kurtosis is very low indicating that
there are few or no outliers. Again we realize that
the skewness is between -0.5 and 0.5 showing that
our data are fairly symmetrical. The minimum
student score for 8 units is 15. On viewing at our
standard deviation which is low as compared to the
mean and median, this also shows that most of our
data values are close to the average. Now on
comparing gender and core unit 4, we realize that
the number of males performed better than the
number of females but the difference in
performance was very small showing that the
competition was good.

It was also realized that the median the
median for male in score unit 4 was greater
followed by female and then those who prefer not
to disclose their gender. Kurtosis for both female
and male in core unit 4 was very low showing that
there are not outliers while kurtosis for students
who prefer not to disclose their gender is a bit
higher suggesting that there may be outliers. Also
since the standard deviation for female in core unit
4 is greater than both male and those who prefer
not to disclose their gender it means that most of
the female data are close to the mean and median
as compared to both male and those prefer not to
disclose their gender. In addition, skewness for
both female and those prefer not to disclose their
gender in core unit 4 is positive while for male its
negative, suggesting that the data for male are
fairly symmetrical. On the relationship between
origin and gender, we see that there are many local
students as compared to the international students.
Again the number of male international students
are greater than the number of female international
students. Furthermore, on the relationship between
grades and attendance, we see that when we
compare the proportion of low attendance who got
c (out of all students) it’s greater than the
proportion of high attendance who got c (out of all

students) this is simply because the relationship
between grades and attendance are directly
proportional, this can further be noticed when
calculating proportion of student who got HD out
of all high attendance students.
In conclusion, we see that all the
correlations ie correlation between attendance in
Tutes and core 4 score, correlation between
attendance in lecture and core 4 score, correlation
between attendance in lecture and core 4 score and
lastly but not list correlation between total
attendance and core 4 score as positive showing
that the variables highly correlate with each other
or depend on each other. Again R^2 is 0.17 which
is also positive this shows that the line of best fit
passes through most of these data hence the data
can be used for plotting a straight line graph.
I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
